Chapter 97 - Room of Noise

The sound of the rim repeated until it stopped being sound and became a hand around Minh's throat.

Rim.

Laugh.

Lâm breathing through pain.

Quân's voice:

No proof.

Then the clip cut wrong, replayed wrong, made every second last longer than memory had any right to last.

Minh stood in the classroom doorway and saw six speakers placed among desks.

Cheap speakers.

School speakers.

Objects a hand could crush easily.

That was the point.

Gomboc rose with pleasure.

"Break them."

Thiên Phú surfaced:

"Audio trigger. Observe placement."

Minh did not move.

The old him would have frozen.

The almost-monster would have destroyed the nearest speaker and called it control because nothing living bled.

Instead, Minh lifted his phone and recorded.

Not the sound only.

The room.

Speaker positions. Wire route. Desk scratches. One open window. Dust disturbed near the cabinet.

Lâm had taught him that edited truth began with missing context.

So Minh took context.

Huyền Kha's voice entered between the rim sounds.

"Improved."

Minh ignored him.

He traced the wires to the cabinet. Inside was not a person, not Hạ Yên, not even a device worth breaking. Only a timed relay feeding sound from another room.

He photographed it.

The rim sound stopped.

Silence rushed in too fast.

For a moment, Minh heard his own breath and realized it had stayed steady.

Mostly.

That mattered.

The classroom screen flickered.

Huyền Kha appeared again.

"You no longer attack the first object that hurts you."

"And you still talk like pain is a survey."

"Pain is not the survey," Huyền Kha said. "Pain is how people stop editing themselves."

Minh looked at the camera above the board.

"Then write this down. I know you're watching."

"Obviously."

"Good."

Minh placed the recording phone upright on the teacher's desk, lens facing the room, capturing the wires, speakers, camera, and empty chairs.

"Now we both have context."

For the first time, Huyền Kha paused.

Small.

Almost nothing.

Minh saw it anyway.

Then three doors unlocked in the hallway.

Behind one, a student cried.

Behind one, Hạ Yên said his name.

Behind one, Lâm shouted, "Minh!"

The next question opened.

The first sound nearly broke him.

Not because it was loud. Loud would have been easier. This was intimate: Lâm's breath catching after the hit, the rim after a failed shot, the small ugly noise a body makes when pain arrives before pride can cover it.

Huyền Kha had not chosen random cruelty.

He had edited Minh's guilt into architecture.

Six speakers. Six desks. Six possible sources of an old wound pretending to happen again. The room asked him to become the simplest version of himself: smash the sound, smash the camera, smash whoever smiled after setting it up.

Minh's fingers opened and closed.

He thought of Lâm in the convenience store, choosing not to come.

He thought of Lãnh Phong saying past tense was a trap.

He thought of Hạ Yên's missing bag strap.

Then he recorded the room.

That action felt weak for exactly one second. Then the room changed. Evidence gave pain a job that was not violence. Context widened the clip. The trap had wanted him to react inside its frame, so Minh made another frame.

Huyền Kha paused when he saw the phone.

Small pause. Almost nothing.

Minh held onto it like a grip.

"You're learning public survival," Huyền Kha said.

Minh followed the wire beneath the teacher's desk. "No. I'm learning you."

The speakers clicked. Lâm's voice shifted to Hạ Yên saying Minh's name.

This time the pain arrived differently.

Not rage.

Fear sharpened by direction.

The room punished memory because memory had no defense against accuracy. Huyền Kha had chosen the sound levels well, left in the imperfect breaths, removed only enough context to make pain feel present. Minh understood then that editing was not only lying. Sometimes it was selecting the truth that hurt most.

Lâm heard his own recorded pain through the feed and nearly tore the earbud out.

He had known the room might use him. Knowing did not prepare him for hearing his worst sound turned into a tool. The convenience store blurred. The girls at the snack shelf laughed at something on their phone. The cashier scanned instant noodles. Life continued around the noise of his body being repurposed.

Lâm gripped the table until his injured hand spasmed.

"Don't listen to it as memory," Tân Phong said quietly.

"What else is it?"

"A file."

Lâm almost cursed at him. Then he understood.

Files had properties. Source. Length. Compression. Loop points. Whoever built the room had edited the audio with enough precision to hurt but not enough to hide repetition.

He forced himself to listen like an analyst instead of a victim.

"The rim sound repeats every nine seconds," he said.

Minh, inside the room, heard him.

"Left speaker pair is looped," Lâm continued, voice shaking but useful. "The real-time voice is not there. He's layering old clips."

Minh looked at the left speakers and changed direction.

Huyền Kha had used Lâm as emotional bait.

Lâm used himself as technical evidence.

The difference did not heal him.

It gave him back one inch of ownership.

Hearing Lâm analyze his own pain changed Minh's anger. It did not reduce it. It gave it shape. The friend Huyền Kha had tried to turn into a wound had become a voice in the room, not pleading, not demanding revenge, but cutting the trap apart by the seams it thought grief would hide.

Tân Phong recorded Lâm's analysis as it happened. Not for drama. For proof that the audio had been weaponized. Lâm heard the keyboard through the call and felt a strange anger: even reclaiming pain required documentation now.

The documentation did not make Lâm feel brave. It made him feel used in a direction he had chosen. That difference was thin, but tonight thin differences mattered.

Minh heard the change in Lâm's voice and trusted it. Not because it was steady, but because it continued.

Continuing was not the same as healing. Tonight, it was enough to keep the trap from owning the rhythm.
