Chapter 95 - Quân Opens the Route

Quân watched Khánh bleed and did not move.

That was the first honest thing he had done all night.

Minh approached him with rain on his shoulders and no triumph in his face.

Quân had expected anger. Anger would have been easier. Anger could be blamed on power, friendship, the old clip, the way boys excused everything after the body started moving.

Minh looked tired instead.

"Move," Minh said.

Quân almost smiled at the return of the word.

Almost.

Then Lâm's voice came through Minh's earpiece, faint but clear enough.

"Ask him who opened the service corridor."

Quân's eyes changed.

Minh saw it.

So did the camera above the door.

Quân looked toward the tutoring center.

"You shouldn't go in."

"That wasn't the question."

Quân swallowed.

Behind him, one of the unnamed Thälmann boys shifted, ready to obey whatever version of courage got him hurt next.

Quân raised one hand.

The boy stopped.

Small power.

Late power.

"Hạo Kỳ gave us the outer positions," Quân said. "But the corridor opened from inside. Huyền Kha wanted you through the front after you saw the service door."

Tân Phong's voice snapped in Minh's ear. "First open door."

Thuận answered, "Do not enter it."

Minh kept looking at Quân.

"Where?"

Quân hesitated.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked down.

His sister's uniform appeared on screen again, face blurred, location clear.

The old leash.

For one second, Quân looked sixteen.

Not captain.

Not villain.

Not redeemed.

Just trapped and ashamed.

Minh said, "You can keep being useful to cowards, or you can be useful once without pretending it's clean."

Quân laughed under his breath.

"You make that sound noble."

"I don't care if it is."

That helped.

Nobility would have made it impossible.

Quân turned and pointed at the side building.

"Laundry stairs. Third floor. Door with no handle. It opens from a classroom, not the hall. Do not touch the files in the second room."

Minh stepped past him.

Quân added, "And Minh."

Minh stopped.

"Huyền Kha doesn't need to beat you."

"I know."

Quân's mouth twisted.

"No. You don't. He needs you to solve things where he can watch."

Minh entered the rain between buildings.

For once, Quân had given a warning before the damage.

It did not pay the debt.

But it opened a route.

Quân had the face of a boy who had chosen too late and wanted credit for noticing.

Minh did not give it to him.

Rain ran from Quân's hair into his collar. His clean Thälmann jacket had lost its shape. Without the school badge posture, he looked younger and more frightened, which made him harder to hate and easier to distrust.

"I didn't know it was a kidnapping," Quân said.

"You knew it was a trap."

Quân swallowed.

That was answer enough.

Minh stepped closer but kept his hands open. Cameras still existed. Huyền Kha still existed. Even mercy could be edited if it leaned too far forward.

"Route," Minh said.

Quân looked toward the tutoring center, then at the boys behind him, then at the street as if help might arrive from a version of himself that had made better choices.

"Second floor," he said. "Not the main stairs. Back service stair, but the first landing is wrong. They want you to go left because the light works there."

"And right?"

"Storage corridor. Old classroom. Then another door."

"Why tell me?"

Quân's mouth twisted. "Because Huyền Kha said no one would get taken. He said it was just pressure. School pressure. Scare you, film you, make Thälmann clean again because you looked worse."

Minh heard Lâm breathe through the earpiece.

Quân looked down. "I believed the part that let me sleep."

For once, Minh had nothing to say to that. Too many people did.

Quân did not become good because he gave a route. Minh knew that. One useful choice could not erase the earlier convenient ones. But it could still open a door, and tonight Minh did not have the luxury of demanding clean hands from everyone holding a key.

Quân's route came in fragments because fear broke honesty into smaller pieces.

Second floor. Service stair. Left light is bait. Old classroom. Back door. Do not touch the metal rail near the first landing. Someone wiped something there.

Minh repeated each piece back to him.

That repetition mattered. It made Quân hear what he knew. With each sentence, the boy's face changed from frightened participant to witness realizing participation had already happened.

"Huyền Kha said the clinic woman was part of it," Quân added.

Minh's eyes sharpened.

"What clinic woman?"

"Not the doctor. The researcher. He didn't say her name. He said if she came, we only had to delay outside. Huyền Kha would handle the rest."

So Huyền Kha had told them just enough.

Not everything. Enough to stand near the crime and choose clean shoes.

Minh stored that for later because later was the only place it could be useful.

"Where is Huyền Kha?"

Quân shook his head. "Gone before rain started. He said visible students stay. Clean planners leave."

Lâm heard that through the call and wrote the sentence down.

Clean planners leave.

He underlined it twice.

Minh looked at Quân. "If you run now, you stay useful to him."

Quân flinched.

"If I stay?"

"You become useful to the truth. Not forgiven. Useful."

The distinction was cruel enough to be fair.

Quân nodded once and stepped aside from the gate.

Quân stayed near the gate after Minh entered. That was his first useful punishment. The rain soaked through his jacket while younger Thälmann boys looked at him for instruction he no longer had. He had helped open the route. Now he had to stand where his previous choices could still be seen.

Quân did not thank him. Minh would have disliked that. Gratitude could become another way to ask for forgiveness early. Instead Quân stood in the rain and looked smaller than his jacket. For tonight, smaller was honest.

Minh entered without forgiving him. That mattered. Forgiveness was not a toll for useful truth. Quân would have to live without that easy purchase.
