Chapter 33: Reincarnation of a Corpse
As time passed, Kenichi Amamiya continued to maintain a good relationship with Kakashi, and during that period he successfully mastered Chidori.
Kakashi, faced with Kenichi deliberately trying to get close to him, gradually became a little less gloomy.
Everything seemed to be progressing smoothly.
All that was left was for Obito to show up and cause chaos, unleashing the Nine Tails to draw the village's attention away.
Just as Kenichi was busy preparing for that impending disaster, Orochimaru dragged him back into the underground laboratory.
"Teacher, can I have these supplies?"
Kenichi had originally been about to ask what Orochimaru wanted him for, but the moment he stepped into the lab, his attention was stolen.
Four Konoha ninjas.
From their gear and bearing, it looked like one jonin leading a three man squad.
What a rare haul.
Jonin might look somewhat unimpressive in the later stages of the ninja world's power scale, but in reality they were the backbone of a village's combat strength.
Up to now, most of Orochimaru's human experiments had used genin and chunin captured from nearby villages, plus some ordinary villagers and a few Konoha genin. A living jonin level subject had never appeared.
So when he saw that this jonin was still alive, Kenichi could not help feeling excited.
This was a jonin.
"No. This is a very rare experimental subject," Orochimaru refused without hesitation.
He clearly had his own plans for this one.
There had been significantly more guards patrolling the village lately, but most civilians could not sense it. Orochimaru, however, had noticed, which was why it was so difficult to secretly capture a complete ninja team like this.
Kenichi felt a little bored after hearing the refusal, but he also knew his teacher's personality well. Orochimaru would never summon him here for no reason.
"Teacher, did you call me for something specific?" he asked.
"Didn't you say you wanted to see Impure World Reincarnation for yourself?" Orochimaru gave him a sidelong look. "I am about to test it."
Kenichi's eyes lit up immediately.
Impure World Reincarnation.
He could finally witness the work of a real necromancer.
"Do not get too excited. Focus on the experiment and observe carefully."
Orochimaru's expression turned solemn. Kenichi instantly straightened, pulling out pen and paper to record every step of his teacher's technique.
Orochimaru brought in another person from the side room.
This one was not a ninja, just an ordinary villager, and he was bound and shaking like a leaf.
Under Kenichi's gaze, Orochimaru formed hand seals, pressed his palm to the sacrificial vessel, and completed Impure World Reincarnation. Gray ash swirled, paper scraps wrapped around the man's body, and a new figure emerged from the cocoon.
In his notes, Kenichi wrote:
Teacher used an ordinary villager as the sacrifice. Impure World Reincarnation succeeded. The target ninja was successfully summoned.
"...Am I still in the Pure Land? Where is this?"
The man who appeared looked dazed, staring at his own hands in confusion. His appearance made Kenichi blink in surprise.
He knew this one.
Kato Dan.
Before Kato Dan could fully understand what was happening, a kunai suddenly pierced the back of his head. His eyes went dark, and he fell silent.
"Record this. Kato Dan's Edo Tensei was a success," Orochimaru said calmly.
Even so, Kenichi could sense a faint wariness beneath his teacher's flat tone.
Is he guarding against the Spirit Transformation Technique?
But right now Kato Dan was not occupying a ninja's body. Even if he used the technique, he probably would not be able to exert its full power.
Kenichi lowered his head again and continued to jot down every detail. He had not expected that Orochimaru had preserved tissue samples from Kato Dan.
"Use the Spirit Transformation Technique to kill the bound ninja," Orochimaru ordered.
However, the reanimated Kato Dan stood motionless. The terrified genin lying tied to the next table simply stared at him, eyes full of fear. Nothing happened.
It seems that using an ordinary civilian as the vessel prevents the reanimated ninja from unleashing their original abilities.
Without needing to be told, Kenichi wrote this conclusion down in his notes.
Then Orochimaru began issuing simple commands.
"Walk. Crouch. Dance."
Each one was executed perfectly.
So control over the reanimated was functioning. The failure clearly lay elsewhere.
Just as Kenichi had guessed, an ordinary body could not withstand or channel the full power of a trained ninja.
Orochimaru did not hesitate. He released the Impure World Reincarnation and prepared a new sacrifice, this time using a genin.
This attempt worked much better. The reanimated ninja was able to perform ordinary ninjutsu.
On the main operating table, the restrained jonin lay struggling, muscles bulging as he fought his bonds. He could only grind his teeth and glare, his eyes bloodshot as if they might pop out of their sockets.
Kenichi had the feeling that if the man could break free, the first thing he would do would be to lunge at Orochimaru and bite his throat out.
Once the ninjutsu was dispelled, the genin sacrifice was also dead.
Orochimaru had no intention of continuing immediately. Instead, he sat down in a chair, eyes narrowed in thought, and silently read through the experimental report Kenichi had just handed him.
Kenichi did not disturb him.
He turned his attention instead to the jonin who was still glaring daggers at them, then yawned.
The four man team had already lost one genin.
Only three remained. Among them was a young kunoichi who was trembling uncontrollably.
Kenichi noticed that the lower part of her trousers was damp, and a sour smell drifted faintly through the air.
"The ninjas these days are getting more and more cowardly."
Orochimaru had clearly noticed as well. He frowned, his thoughts having been interrupted, and his tone carried a hint of anger. Yet, surprisingly, he did not lash out at her.
That surprised Kenichi.
Normally, he would not dare say even a word when his teacher was deep in thought, for fear of provoking his temper.
But this time, the frightened kunoichi was not punished at all.
That alone made Kenichi give her another careful look.
She was actually quite pretty.
She was still young and had not grown into her features yet, but she already had the look of a future beauty.
"I remember teacher later reincarnated into the body of a beautiful woman," Kenichi thought, eyes narrowing slightly. "Could this be the one?"
The more he compared, the more possible it seemed.
Her age also lined up. When Orochimaru carried out the Konoha Crush plan in the future, the host body he used would have been about this age.
Kenichi studied the kunoichi again. She was clearly terrified, yet even in fear there was a delicate, pitiful charm to her.
Without meaning to, he began to mentally superimpose Orochimaru's personality onto that trembling figure.
"That would be incredible," Kenichi clicked his tongue softly.
He recalled the specifics of Orochimaru's Living Corpse Reincarnation. Only the soul migrated. The physical body remained unchanged.
In other words, once the reincarnation was complete, Orochimaru could perfectly inhabit a female body.
The host he chose in the future had extremely high compatibility with him. If the Third Hokage had not sealed his arms back then, he might never have abandoned that vessel.
Which meant that for quite a long time, his teacher would essentially be walking around in the form of a woman.
"I wonder if teacher would have to deal with... visiting once a month," Kenichi murmured to himself, expression twisting slightly at the thought.
