Chapter 27: Indeed, the End of the Universe Is Where the System Is Built

"Summoning beasts also need physical examinations?"

Kenichi Amamiya was genuinely stunned. This was the first time he had ever heard of summoning beasts lining up for checkups like normal shinobi.

And speaking of a teacher's teacher, that meant the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. Hiruzen's summoning beast should be Enma, the Monkey King. Kenichi remembered that Enma could even transform into a staff, which was extremely practical in combat.

However, the ape type summoning beasts rarely appeared. In the later stages of the story, it was always the holy land summons that showed up more frequently.

"Why not?" Orochimaru sneered softly. "Sarutobi sensei's summoning beast enjoys the treatment of a jonin. It gets two full medical checkups every year."

Kenichi's lips twitched.

A summoning beast enjoying jonin benefits…

In his previous life, that would have been considered a legitimate government post, complete with its own formal staffing.

So this was what people meant when they said, "At the end of the universe, everything becomes a bureaucratic system."

He could not help thinking: if I go take the exam now, is it too late to get in on that?

"However, if it is the summoning beast of the former Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi, then the chance of it getting cancer is actually quite high," Kenichi muttered, touching his chin.

"Oh?" Orochimaru's eyes narrowed with interest. "Didn't you say that smoking is the main cause of lung cancer at present?"

When it came to this new type of disease, his own understanding could not compare to that of his disciple.

Orochimaru even had the vague feeling that not even Tsunade knew as much about this as Kenichi did.

"Yes, but if the former Hokage is smoking frequently around others over a long period of time, those people are actually more likely to develop lung cancer." Kenichi shrugged. "Secondhand smoke is far more harmful than firsthand smoke."

In his previous life, this had been proven over and over again.

That was why so many public places had strict smoking bans. It was inconvenient for smokers, but it kept everyone else from being slowly poisoned.

"After the smoke passes the filter, part of the harmful substances is blocked. Some of the residue is absorbed by the smoker's own lungs, but the rest is exhaled as smoke." Kenichi gestured as he explained.

"Then the harmful substances carried in that smoke, once inhaled by others, can also lead to cancer."

Of course, that part did not need to be said aloud in his previous world; it was already common sense. Here, though, he had to package it as something he had discovered in experiments.

"I figured it out while doing experiments," Kenichi added casually.

The danger of secondhand smoke was something he already knew from his past life, but for it to make sense in this world's logic, he needed to anchor it in his research here.

If Orochimaru really wanted to run further tests, Kenichi would not mind at all. He had already done similar experiments earlier just to be safe, and he had not expected they would become useful now.

Orochimaru did not dig into the details. He remembered that Kenichi had indeed mentioned this point in a previous experimental report, so it was not entirely new.

What really interested Orochimaru were those hypocritical old men constantly orbiting around his teacher.

His teacher loved to smoke, and spent so much time talking in meetings. If lung cancer really could be triggered this way, it would not be surprising at all if he ended up with it.

Even if they all received regular physical examinations, there were gaps between those checkups. As long as he could constantly channel Yang nature chakra into them during those intervals…

Even if it did not work, it would not matter.

Orochimaru simply wanted to plant a seed and leave it there. Whether it sprouted and bore fruit in the future was another question entirely.

This was how he always operated: scatter seeds across the world. If they grew, that was wonderful. If they withered, he lost nothing.

This time, he decided it was worth trying. If it worked, it would only make his future movements freer. If it failed, it changed nothing.

"Let us go. We will not go to the usual place today. I am going to give you a proper lesson. Your strength is still far too weak."

Orochimaru's mood had clearly improved as he looked his disciple up and down.

A chill ran down Kenichi's back. His teacher could be terrifying when he decided it was "training time." He had been beaten black and blue more than once, even if the wounds were all superficial.

According to Orochimaru, these were just reminders. When he fought others in real combat in the future, the wounds he took might not be so forgiving.

"Understood, teacher."

Even so, Kenichi had no objections. He knew Orochimaru was right. His current strength was still weak.

In the ninja world, only once you reached jonin level could you consider yourself to have some real combat power.

During sparring, Kenichi also used the opportunity to test the practicality of his new ninjutsu on Orochimaru.

Originally, he had not planned to do this. If something went wrong with his teacher, he would absolutely be the one held responsible.

But Orochimaru had waved off his concerns and told him not to worry, saying he had his own methods of dealing with it.

So Kenichi did not hold back.

"I am guessing sensei's reincarnation technique should be almost complete by now," Kenichi thought as he moved. "I just wonder whose body he is preparing to take next. If it ends up being a cute girl, that will just make things even stranger to look at later…"

He remembered that, in the future, Orochimaru would indeed use the body of a young girl, and she was objectively not bad looking.

But no matter how you dressed it up, that would still be Orochimaru on the inside. The whole idea made his scalp tingle.

Kenichi gave his head a quick shake.

Impossible. Absolutely impossible. No matter how the outward appearance changed, the person underneath was still Orochimaru. The soul never changed.

"You dare get distracted during battle?!"

Orochimaru's cold voice cracked through the air. An instant later, a sharp pain lanced through Kenichi's ribs, as if he had just been skewered.

He sucked in a breath and forced himself to focus. If he let his mind wander again, he knew he would only suffer worse.

"Teacher, please guide me!"

Kenichi lunged forward, at the same time shaping a wisp of converted wind style chakra and using it to carry a fine mist of specially prepared nicotine spray toward Orochimaru.

Orochimaru did not respond with words. He simply retreated in a blur and formed hand seals, spewing out a roaring Great Fireball that surged straight toward Kenichi.

Kenichi narrowed his eyes.

This ninjutsu still needed a lot of refinement.

As things stood now, if the opponent kept their distance, its efficiency plummeted. All the nicotine mist he had just dispersed had been burned away by that single Great Fireball.
