Chapter 33 - Those who chose to stay

Yumiel was climbing and moving from rooftop to rooftop. Her destination was the street where Mathis lived. Wanting to check that the anti-monster organization had really cleared out — otherwise it was going to be a feast for Yumiel.

Not far from her position, Yumiel could hear screams and gunshots. But she paid no attention to them, she had far too much to do. Rushing toward where her friend lived.

When she arrived, she saw only flames devouring the houses. « It seems they suffered an attack. » Most of the houses were intact, only a few of them had burned.

Yumiel jumped from her roof, landing in the street to inspect. Walking down the street toward Mathis's house, she came across corpses. Some burned and others shot dead.

Yumiel crouched and examined the bodies of the men and women. « They died about more than 10 hours ago. » Yumiel could state this thanks to rigor mortis and livor mortis.

Continuing down the long alleyway, lined with corpses on the sides. She reached Mathis's house, apparently in good condition from the outside. Yumiel opened her senses, feeling several presences in the house. She estimated between four and six.

Keeping her senses active, she entered the house. At the same time, a bullet was fired the moment Yumiel crossed the doorway. Fortunately, thanks to her senses, she dodged easily.

Turning her head to her left, two armed men were shooting at her. Yumiel opened her flask, creating a wall of crystallized blood in front of her. At the same time, she created a sword with her blood, then waited for the gunfire to end. Turning her wall back into blood, which she returned to her flask, she rushed toward the two men.

In only a few seconds she was in front of them, cutting their weapon and slicing the head of the one on the right, then striking the one on the left, knocking him to the ground.

Yumiel points her sword at the man on the ground. « What happened here? »

The man regained his senses, lifting his head to see a sword a few meters from his face. « What the hell are you talking about and who the fuck are you? »

Yumiel drove her sword into the man's hand. « Argh! Fucking bitch, you pierced my hand. »

« And soon it will be your head if you don't answer me. What happened here? » Yumiel spoke with a calm and serene tone. At the same time, she heard behind her the last four people coming down from upstairs.

« You really want to know? I'll tell you… but first. YOU'RE GOING TO HELL KILLERRR THERE! » Yumiel had anticipated it, creating a wall of blood behind her.

Despite the wall blocking the bullets, the four still emptied their magazines into it. Once the shots ended, she transformed her wall into three swords that she sent to kill three of the men who had come down the stairs, leaving one woman alive, then killed the man on the ground.

Yumiel slowly approached the woman, driving two of the swords she controlled into her hands. « Tsss… »

« Tough, now tell me what happened here. »

The woman was pinned to the wall with two swords planted in each hand. Yumiel walked around the room, ripping out each heart and drinking their blood.

« So, are you going to answer me or what? »

The woman was strapped to the wall, saying absolutely nothing. Simply suffering in silence.

Sighing, Yumiel said: « It's in moments like these I wish Jack were here. »

Yumiel recalled her blades, turning them into blood and putting them back into her flask, then walked toward the woman. « Well, I just want to know what happened here. If you tell me, I promise to let you live. »

Eventually the woman spoke. « Can a monster keep promises? »

« That depends on whether you speak or not! »

« Who are you? Why do you care about this place? »

« Who I am is none of your concern. As for the second question, I'd say I'm a friend or an enemy depending on your answer. But let me warn you. If you refuse to answer me, be sure I will kill every person present in this street! »

The woman began to laugh: « Ahahaha, and I'm certain you would enjoy it. »

« Maybe so », Yumiel was about to kill her, creating a blood sword to cut off her head, but the moment the sword was about to kill her, she began to speak.

« The lady who lived here, Mrs. Kate, possessed abilities like those of monsters. Though different, she could recognize people who had abilities. »

The woman caught her breath.

« One day, she received a visit telling her to leave this place, or she would face the wrath of a monster. Strangely, she chose to listen to this monster, asking all the people gathered on this street to leave. »

The woman tried to dress her wounds, but because both her hands were injured, she struggled to do so. Yumiel tore a piece of cloth from the men's clothes, then applied a bandage to her wounded hands.

« But what are you doing? »

Yumiel finished bandaging her wounds then said: « I'm doing what I promised to do. Now, finish telling the story. »

« Most refused to follow her, shouting betrayal. » Yumiel cut her off.

« Betrayal, why? »

« Mrs. Kate and her husband were the leaders of the anti-monster organization, so asking them to leave because of a monster was unacceptable to them. That led to a rebellion aiming to overthrow the leadership. But no one expected people with abilities or powers, whatever you want to call them, to join Mrs. Kate. Koff Koff! »

Yumiel helped the woman to her feet and guided her toward the couch. « Take your time. »

« When Mrs. Kate revealed her cards, she forced people to leave this place. As a result, it caused a bloody rebellion that pitted Mrs. Kate and her superhumans against the members of the anti-monster organization. Of course, some supporters stayed with Mrs. Kate, but a large part was against her. What you see outside is the result of this battle. »
