Chapter 38 - the station

Jack had just been thrown against the car, crushing it with his body. Destroying the car door, « Agh… » Jack took only a few seconds to regain his senses.

Standing back up, searching for Yumiel with his eyes while shouting at her. « FUCK YUMIEL, YOU COULD HAVE PAID ATTENTION! »

Jack looked around for Yumiel before turning and seeing her impaled on pieces of scrap metal. Jack ran to her.

« Nghh… a little help wouldn't hurt. » Yumiel spoke with a weak voice, though Jack was convinced she would survive even without him. Jack helped Yumiel get out by pulling her free, making the rusty metal she'd landed on screech loudly.

Yumiel's wounds healed before his eyes. « Jack, we're about to be ambushed! Get ready. »

Jack, puzzled, looked around. They were in the street at the entrance of the station, which had clearly been barricaded. The surrounding buildings had collapsed, the light wind carried only a misty dust, and the countless debris on the ground covered the road.

Jack murmured: « No doubt, this is definitely central London. »

Yumiel looked in all directions while opening her senses. Jack noticed Yumiel's agitation and asked her:

« What's going on with you? »

Yumiel stared straight ahead — the direction they had come from. Jack looked too but saw nothing besides a destroyed road and piles of cars.

Yumiel kept her head still, only turning her eye to Jack. « I'm almost sure the tire exploded because of a shot. »

Jack continued scanning the surroundings, but to him, there was nothing.

« You're sure? » he asked, looking at Yumiel. « Anyway, forget it, I trust you, your senses are way more developed than mine. So what's the plan? »

Yumiel stood frozen like a statue, still facing the same direction. Jack understood she was concentrating, trying to pick something up.

« You're going to break down the barricades behind us and we're going into the station. I'm out of blood in my flask, so long-range attacks are going to be tricky. »

Jack immediately complied with Yumiel's order. Frantically unbarricading the station entrance, ripping out the metal and wood pieces that had been assembled to create a wall.

Suddenly, while Jack was still clearing the wall leading to the station, a bullet sliced through the air, heading straight for Jack's head. Yumiel sensed it, stepped in front of Jack, and created a shield by forcing blood out through her skin. The bullet ricocheted off Yumiel's crystalized blood shield.

The noise made Jack jump: « FUCK WHAT WAS THAT?! »

Yumiel kept her shield in hand, always alert. « A sniper bullet. I'll protect you, so hurry up, I won't be able to keep my senses open for long. »

Jack smashed, tore, and pulled as fast as he could. Suddenly a second whistle followed by a « TING! » rang — the bullet bouncing off Yumiel's shield. Jack jumped again.

Yumiel tried to speak but Jack spoke first, as if he knew what she was going to say: « I'm hurrying, Yumiel, I'm hurrying! »

The assault of bullets became more frequent, but thankfully Yumiel could easily block them.

« Finally, » shouted Jack as he saw through the other side of the debris wall. After a few minutes, he created an opening wide enough for both him and Yumiel to pass.

Jack slipped through the gap and Yumiel followed, absorbing her shield once inside.

The station was in a pitiful state, the walls almost all cracked, coagulated blood covering the ground with more than a hundred bodies stacked then burned in different parts of the station. Whatever had happened here, one thing was certain: it had been violent.

But the most surprising thing was the people who were still alive inside, sitting all over the station. Some slept together, others threatened each other over food or water.

« The city center sucks, I feel like even the cemetery was more cheerful. »

« What can I say, it must be the same everywhere. Let's just gather information. » At Yumiel's words Jack drooled, thinking of the many brains he would get to eat.

They walked deeper into the station, exploring the area. They didn't have to go far before being approached by a man.

« Excuse me, I saw you enter the station, wouldn't you have a small bite of bread for a man dying of hunger? »

« Brain? » said Jack while staring at the man's head, who recoiled in shock at Jack's words.

Yumiel exhaled before speaking: « Excuse my companion, we do indeed have some food, which we would gladly share with you in exchange for information. »

The man smiled at Yumiel's words before shouting: « THEY HAVE FOOD, GUYS! »

Several people emerged from the underground areas of the station. Others even came out from behind vending machines. Jack looked at Yumiel before saying: « Brain? »

Yumiel pinched the bridge of her nose: « Yes, yes, Brain. »

As they were being surrounded, Jack charged at them, crushing several heads with his hands. Yumiel stayed behind, approaching the man who had spoken to them.

The man pulled out a knife and lunged at Yumiel to stab her. She dodged the stab easily, then pierced his stomach with her hand, lifting him off the ground.

« I… I… Pray… » The man tried to beg for his life, but with Yumiel's hand and half her arm inside his torso, it wasn't easy.

« Bla bla bla, where's your boss? Point at him and I might save you. »

The man moved his trembling finger toward a man near Jack. « Thank you. » Yumiel ripped his heart out with her other hand.

Yumiel drained him of blood, then mixed a drop of her own blood with his, thus turning it into blood she could control. She filled her flask with some and used the rest to create five daggers.

Yumiel was surprised — before, to control more than five blades or whatever at the same time, she needed to open her senses. Apparently, that was no longer necessary. She could clearly feel the effects of her increase in power.

The men had trouble dealing with Jack. After all, a zombie who feels no pain and possesses titanic strength compared to them was bound to be difficult.

Yumiel joined Jack in the fight, although he clearly didn't need help.

« Jack, you see that guy over there? Don't kill him. » Yumiel pointed at a man in a suit.

The fight didn't last long. There were about twenty of them, and before Yumiel even joined Jack, he had already killed eight. Yumiel's arrival allowed them to finish in record time, leaving only the man in the suit — and especially without legs.
