Chapter 39 - trap

The terrified man crawled as far away from Yumiel as he could.

« Please, just let me go… »

The legless man crawled, leaving a trail of blood behind him. Yumiel turned her head toward Jack, noticing the many wounds on his body, and a few knives still stuck in different places.

« I'll leave him to you, I'm going to get some information in my own way and replace the damaged parts of his body. »

Yumiel approached the wounded man.

« Just the two of us now. Tell me what you know about this place, and why so many people are gathered inside the station. »

The terrified man responded almost instantly to Yumiel.

« Alright, I… I don't know the full story, but the government announced that trains would be leaving for safe zones. So everyone gathered at the station. »

The man was starting to change color because of the blood loss, his voice growing weaker and weaker.

« But once inside, there were already a lot of people. So… so… »

The man began to lose consciousness. Yumiel couldn't do anything for him, so she eased his suffering by piercing his chest and tearing out his heart. She did the same for all the other bodies, before rejoining Jack, who was replacing his limbs and finishing the remaining brains.

« So, anything new? »

Jack finished eating.

« Hm, right, so the rest is that the station was completely overcrowded. People were already trying to leave the city before the government even made the announcement. The station couldn't hold that many people. You know how it ended. »

Yumiel crossed her arms, leaning against the wall.

« They all killed each other. Add monsters and the Awakened on top of that, and it turned into an absolute massacre. »

Jack stood up with his new limbs, stretching slightly.

« So, what's the plan now? »

Yumiel looked around the station. Everyone who had been nearby had run away when Jack and Yumiel started fighting.

« Jack? »

« Hm? Yeah? »

« I came here to get information about Mathis and his father, Mr. Norman. So this time we're going to behave like monsters, and eat absolutely everyone in this station. »

Jack burst out laughing when he heard Yumiel: « Finally you're saying something sensible. »

Yumiel and Jack walked along the station, killing every single person they came across—though they barely found any.

Once they had finished sweeping the station, all that remained to explore were the underground passages and the platforms that connected to them.

« Anything new, Jack? »

Jack shook his head from side to side.

« All that's left is to go down. »

Heading toward the undergrounds, they found a barricade blocking the entire descent, with a door built into the center. Jack destroyed it within seconds, violently smashing the door.

Yumiel went ahead, opening her senses; she was still controlling her five daggers and her flask was still full.

As they made their way down into the underground tunnel, Jack almost fell, mostly because he couldn't see a thing—every light was turned off.

Jack whispered to Yumiel: « Stay close to me, I can't see anything. »

For Yumiel, it was like broad daylight, and with her senses open, she could tell there was no one in that tunnel.

« Hold onto me. » Jack moved his hands around in the darkness, grabbing the first soft and warm thing he touched—only to get punched a second later, making him let go of the soft object he had grabbed.

« Why did you hit me!? »

Yumiel wanted to yell at him but gave up, offering her hand and helping Jack up before giving him her arm: « Watch where you put your hands next time! »

Jack didn't really understand, but let it go, clinging tightly to Yumiel's arm as she stopped in front of a wall with a door in its center. Above it was a sign that read Platform Four.

« This is platform number four, you can break the door. »

Still unable to see well, Jack punched several spots, completely destroying the barricade. « There, it's done. After you, miss. »

The light from the platform spilled into the tunnel, letting Jack see Yumiel's surprised face before she continued up the stairs.

Yumiel opened her senses as she climbed the stairs. Once at the top, they saw nothing around them, the place was deserted. Until Yumiel sensed activity—slight vibrations coming from the tunnel, from both directions. Then vibrations coming from the other platforms, from the elevators—everywhere. The vibrations multiplied at an insane speed.

Yumiel understood instantly that it was a trap.

« Jack, get ready, it was a trap! We're going to get surrounded. »

Jack, startled, looked around.

« What? A trap? Where? »

Yumiel muttered internally: « Fucking idiot. »

« Follow me, we're going to try to take a strategic point. »

Jack followed Yumiel as she ran across the platforms, reaching platform 1. They were about to take the stairs leading to the exit when she felt vibrations coming from there.

« Oh, screw this, we force our way through. »

Yumiel took the stairs with Jack behind her. In front of them, several armed people. Yumiel rushed them, sending her five daggers to kill them, but the men resisted, dodging the daggers and shooting back at Yumiel and Jack.

Once close enough, Yumiel could tell there were six of them, highly trained, aiming only for Yumiel's or Jack's head. Forcing Yumiel to constantly dodge, and preventing Jack from getting close.

Even though they were clearly very well trained, they were no match for Yumiel's daggers—eventually dying from blood loss or being stabbed. It took some time. Once their numbers were reduced, Jack stepped in, approaching them and ignoring the bullets that weren't aimed at his head, allowing Yumiel to kill them more easily with her daggers.

Once the soldiers were dead, Jack started wanting to replace his damaged limbs, but Yumiel stopped him immediately.

« We don't have time, just take one or two brains to figure out their plan. »

Ten seconds later, six more men reached the bottom of the stairs, firing at Yumiel and Jack. Yumiel had just torn out a few hearts before heading up the stairs with Jack. Yumiel consumed the hearts in hand, and Jack the two brains he held.

At the top, they ended up in an airlock—a maintenance corridor. They ran up the corridor, looking for emergency exits posted along the walls. But they were running so fast they didn't have time to stop, finishing their sprint at the end of the corridor, crashing through the door and landing in the technical parking area reserved for deliveries.

Jack stumbled out, falling to the ground. Yumiel turned back and closed the door. Jack lay motionless on the ground; Yumiel helped him up.

« Quick, we have to go. »

Yumiel looked at Jack, showing a surprised expression in her eyes, as if watching a movie and her face was reflecting its emotions.

Jack grabbed Yumiel's shoulder just as she was about to leave.

« It's too late, Yumiel. »
