Cherreads

Chapter 41 - The Root of All Evil

**Z-Valhalla. Rooftop Community Garden. (Unit 202 Shared Space).**

**Sunday. 10:00 AM.**

The rooftop has changed.

Before the merger, it was grey concrete where residents smoked cigarettes and dried laundry.

Now, it is **Eden 2.0**.

**Adam** stands knee-deep in soil that glows with faint phosphorescence. He wears overalls (over his loincloth) and a straw hat. He holds a watering can with the tenderness of a father holding a newborn.

**"Grow,"** Adam whispers to a row of radishes. **"Be crisp. Be spicy. Do not disappoint your father."**

**Saitama** squats nearby. He holds a plastic basket.

"Are they ready?" Saitama asks, poking a tomato. "I want salad for lunch."

"Patience, Anomaly," Adam chides, eyes glistening. "Vegetables cannot be rushed. They need love. They need encouragement."

**Poseidon** sits on a lawn chair under an umbrella. He is reading a magazine titled *'Aquatic Architectural Digest'.*

He points a finger. A stream of water shoots from a rooftop tank, perfectly misting the kale.

"Stop talking to the food," Poseidon states coldyl. "It is unsettling."

**The Trespasser.**

The air shifts.

The smell of fresh earth turns rotting. The wind carries spores.

A vine creeps over the edge of the parapet. It is thick, green, and pulsing with purple veins.

It doesn't climb. It *hunts*.

**Demeter.** The Goddess of the Harvest.

She rises from the vine, stepping onto the roof. She is tall, dressed in woven wheat and sorrow. Her eyes are winter.

"Who," Demeter asks, her voice dry as chaff, "is farming on *my* sky?"

Adam stands up. He wipes dirt from his hands.

**"I am Adam. I tend this garden."**

Demeter sneers. She sees the merged vegetables—cabbages crossed with mana, carrots grown in god-soil.

"Abomination," she spits. "You pollute the soil. You mock the harvest."

She raises a wooden staff.

**"I claim this crop. By the Laws of Seasons, I enact Eminent Domain."**

**The Escalation.**

Saitama stands up. He grips his basket.

"Eminent what now? Listen, plant-lady, I paid for those seeds. 100 yen a packet."

Demeter ignores the mortal. She slams her staff.

**Divine Move: The Great Famine.**

Green energy ripples out.

But instead of killing the plants, she *overloads* them. She intends to grow them until they burst and rot.

**"Choke on your harvest!"**

The radishes twitch.

The carrots groan.

The soil explodes.

The vegetables don't die. They mutate. They have been tended by Adam (the Copy Master) and watered by Poseidon (God of Seas). They have too much power to rot.

Instead, they fight back.

**The Threat: The Salad of Doom.**

A **Killer Tomato** swells to the size of a wrecking ball. It grows teeth.

A **Cucumber Serpent** slithers out, hissing acid.

The **Radishes** pull themselves out of the dirt. They have muscular legs. They start running around screaming.

**"MY CHILDREN!"** Adam weeps. **"THEY ARE GOING THROUGH PUBERTY!"**

"They are aggressive!" Poseidon stands, trident ready. "Impure vegetation!"

The Tomato jumps.

It aims for Demeter.

Demeter gasps. She raises a wall of thorns.

The Tomato smashes through the thorns. *SPLAT.*

It doesn't break. It's too firm. (Adam did a good job).

It knocks the Goddess of Harvest into the HVAC unit.

"Impossible!" Demeter shrieks, buried under leaves. "They reject my command?"

**Saitama's Lunch.**

Saitama looks at the chaos.

Muscular radishes are body-slamming the air conditioning vents.

The Cucumber Serpent is strangling Poseidon (who looks annoyed rather than hurt).

The Tomato is rolling toward the edge of the roof, threatening to fall into the street below.

"Hey!" Saitama yells. "Get back in the pot!"

A **Broccoli Titan** rises from the center bed.

It is twenty feet tall. It has florets for fists.

**"EAT YOUR GREENS,"** the broccoli roars in a subsonic bass.

It punches Saitama.

A massive green fist slams into Saitama's head.

*THUMP.*

Silence.

Pollen drifts in the air.

Saitama stands there. He is covered in broccoli crumbs.

He looks at the giant vegetable.

His expression shifts. The "Serious" shading descends.

"I hate broccoli," Saitama whispers. "The texture is weird."

**The Harvest.**

Saitama doesn't punch.

He reaches out.

He grabs the Broccoli Titan by the stalk.

"Serious Series: Serious Peeling."

He pulls.

*RIP.*

He strips the florets. He strips the leaves. He disassembles the vegetable monster with hands moving at Mach 500.

In one second, the giant monster is reduced to a neat pile of bite-sized florets.

Saitama scoops them into his basket.

"Chopped," he says.

He turns to the Running Radishes.

They freeze. They sense the Apex Predator.

Saitama crouches.

**"Don't make me chase you."**

The Radishes surrender. They willingly jump into the basket, stacking themselves neatly.

The Killer Tomato stops rolling. It sweats juice.

Saitama points at it.

"You're too big for a salad. You're soup."

The Tomato faints from fear.

**The Aftermath.**

The roof is quiet again.

Adam is on his knees, holding the shriveled remains of a pumpkin.

**"They grew up so fast,"** Adam sobs.

Demeter crawls out of the HVAC unit. She is covered in compost.

She stares at the bald man holding the basket of monster-vegetables.

"He... he harvested the mutant strain?" Demeter whispers. "With bare hands?"

Saitama looks at her.

"You," Saitama points a carrot. "Your fertilizer is too strong. Use less next time."

He turns to Adam.

"Adam, wash these. They have monster guts on them."

He turns to Poseidon.

"Water boy, rinse the roof. It smells like fertilizer."

Poseidon's eye twitches.

"I am the God of Gods... I do not 'rinse'..."

Saitama stares.

Poseidon sighs.

He raises a finger.

"Rinsing."

A gentle wave washes the roof clean.

**Downstairs.**

Saitama walks into the apartment.

Genos is waiting with a pot of boiling water.

"Master. Sensors indicate high biological density in the harvest."

"Yeah," Saitama dumps the subdued vegetable-monsters into the pot.

*Splash.*

The pot lid rattles as the veggies try to escape.

Saitama puts a heavy rock on the lid.

"Give it twenty minutes."

King walks in.

"I heard screaming," King says. "Was it a ghost?"

"No," Saitama sits at the table, picking up his chopsticks. "Just intense gardening."

**Demeter's Fate.**

On the roof, Demeter tries to sneak away.

**"Halt,"** Adam's voice stops her.

The First Man stands up. He hands her a rake.

**"You disturbed the soil,"** Adam says gently. **"You must aerate it again. It is the Penance of the Farmer."**

Demeter looks at the rake. She looks at Adam's calm, terrifying eyes (the ones that reflected a Serious Punch).

The Goddess of Harvest sighs.

She takes the rake.

"Fine. But I demand half the zucchini."
