Chapter 56: The Mantis Devil Fruit User
Luo Han flew to the front of the Green Cross Pirates… well, "Green Cross" was a name he'd made up himself.
He looked at the self-proclaimed "Boss" captain of the Green Cross, wearing a ridiculous green-cross hat, loud floral shoes, and gaudy pants. He was four meters tall—and his arms were just as long.
Luo Han felt a little out of it. The guy reminded him of those old dudes playing water guns at the beach.
While Luo Han sized up Tuck, the pirates on Tuck's ship were equally stirred.
"Captain Tuck! That guy can fly!"
"Yeah! He must be a Devil Fruit user like you, Captain!"
"Too scary!"
Hearing their murmurs and seeing doubt start to creep in, Captain Tuck flew into a rage.
"Silence! You fools! Have you forgotten Granny's teachings?!"
Ah! That's right! The pirates suddenly recalled Granny's words, spoken from the ruins of their hometown before they set sail:
Tuck, you're too strong. This place isn't your world. The New World is where you truly belong. They say it holds everything the world has to offer—everything prepared just for you. Now go! Granny packed some buns for you, eat them if you get hungry.
…
Recalling her words, the pirates quickly regained their arrogance and started taunting Luo Han again.
Luo Han stayed quiet.
"Haha!" Tuck laughed proudly, thinking, Granny was right—I'm destined to rule this world. Everyone will fall under my charm.
That guy flying around must also have a Devil Fruit. Good! Someone like him should serve under me. A man destined to own the world must think big, after all.
Whoosh! Luo Han instinctively dodged to the side as a massive slash cleaved the air between him and the Green Cross ship. The sea split like soft cheese, pushing the enemy ship away with the wave.
That damn Golden Lion! Luo Han turned to see him and heard him shout impatiently, "Hey! Luo Han, brat—we still need to go after the Roger Pirates! Hurry it up!"
Luo Han shrugged and didn't argue.
Looking back at the stunned Tuck and his men, Luo Han didn't waste time. With a thought, he wrapped every single one of them in psychokinesis.
They were all pulled off their ship like dumplings, bundled together into one big floating cluster in front of Luo Han.
"Captain! I can't move!"
"Me neither!"
"Shut up, you idiots! Have you forgotten Granny's teachings?!" Tuck scolded them, though he himself was shaking on the inside.
And yet, somehow, just recalling Granny's words filled them with renewed confidence.
Luo Han was speechless. Just seconds ago, they were terrified by Golden Lion's slash—now, after some "Granny wisdom," they were fired up again?
Unbelievable.
Shaking his head, Luo Han looked at Tuck, who was still struggling, and said, "Seriously—how did idiots like you get the idea to challenge the Rocks Pirates? Don't tell me… Granny?"
That sentence seemed to touch a nerve. Tuck's brow furrowed, and he stopped struggling.
Then, staring at Luo Han with fierce determination, he growled, "You dare doubt Granny's teachings?!"
Roar! With a loud yell, Tuck began to transform using his Devil Fruit power!
Luo Han's eyes lit up. So this was his power. Interesting.
He released Tuck from his psychokinetic hold, allowing him to transform freely. This guy was an animal-type Devil Fruit user like Cole —but with a different kind of ability.
The question was, what species?
Crack! Crack! Loud noises rang out as Tuck transformed. Before long, a towering ten-meter-tall figure floated before Luo Han. It resembled a humanoid mantis standing upright.
Green wings sprouted from its back, and sharp white bony spikes jutted from each shoulder. Its arms ended in enormous, gleaming purple sickle blades, and its feet had clawed talons.
Its entire body was covered in purple chitinous armor. Its head looked like some alien creature, and purple fluid dripped from its jagged mouth.
(A visual reference would be something like Kha'Zix from League of Legends.)
Luo Han trembled with excitement. No doubt—this had to be the Voidreaver, Kha'Zix! What an insanely cool Devil Fruit power!
This was the embodiment of his youth standing before him! At that moment, Luo Han desperately wished it had been he who ate that Devil Fruit. But alas, it went to this idiot instead. No matter! Luo Han instantly decided—if he couldn't have it, then this fool would become his subordinate.
As he spiraled into this fantasy, Luo Han wasn't even aware of the look on his face… which was, let's say, hard to describe.
"Haha! You see my magnificent form, don't you? Already captivated by my charm, aren't you?" Tuck boasted, mistaking Luo Han's expression for awe.
Snapped out of his daydream, Luo Han raised his head, looked at Tuck with growing discomfort, and then used his psychokinesis to slam him down.
Tuck struggled to resist, but couldn't break free from Luo Han's grip.
Right now, Tuck was at best around rear admiral level—comparable to Luffy when he first arrived at Sabaody Archipelago.
Luo Han, on the other hand, was now a peak-level vice admiral. Unless he encountered a top-tier user of all three Haki types, he could go toe-to-toe with just about anyone.
Pulling Tuck down to his level, Luo Han finally felt a bit more comfortable.
"Alright then! Let's see what you've got." Luo Han released his hold on Tuck again.
Feeling his body lighten, Tuck didn't waste time talking. He immediately slashed at Luo Han with his enormous purple blades.
Clang! Clang! The impact felt like steel crashing against steel. Tuck's hands trembled.
Wham! Before he could recover, it was as if a giant door smacked him midair, sending him flying—smacking into several of his freed crewmates along the way.
Splash! The sound of bodies hitting water echoed like dumplings dropped into soup. Only Tuck stopped midair, 500 meters away.
Luo Han examined his own hand, eyes gleaming. That chitin armor had impressive defense.
Tuck, dazed and floating far off, shook his head to regain focus.
He looked at Luo Han with deep confusion. That invisible strike—it felt like smashing headfirst into a concrete wall, then being flung back.
But that bastard actually hit me!
Ting ting! Tuck growled and sent two flying slashes straight at Luo Han.
He followed it up with a rapid flutter of his wings—swish swish!—sending a volley of blade-like feathers flying alongside the energy slashes.
The twin slashes and feather daggers rapidly approached Luo Han, growing larger in his pupils. But the light in his eyes only grew brighter.
Now that's more like it, Luo Han thought, hands clasped behind his back.
With a sharp gaze, he summoned a wall of psychokinetic energy.
Clang! Ding ding ding…! The slashes and feather daggers all collided against the barrier.
Not bad! But still lacking. Though it looked like a swordsman's flying slash, it was really just a blade of energy born from the Devil Fruit—like the wind blades from a Scythe-Scythe Fruit. Without the infusion of willpower, it couldn't reach the level of cutting iron.
The feather attack? Clearly meant for clearing out small fry. Against Luo Han, it was nothing more than background music.
"Keep going! That all you've got?" Luo Han called out.
Tuck, seeing both attacks fail to even make Luo Han flinch, hesitated. Then he quickly closed his eyes and recited Granny's teachings again.
…
Yes! Granny was right. I, Tuck, am the master of this world! The man destined to rule everything!
Opening his eyes, he was once again the fearless Tuck.
Now watch, as I unleash the power I developed to rule the world—prepare to die!
To Luo Han's eyes, he saw Tuck mutter something, then vanish with a flicker.
Wait… vanish?
What the—?! Luo Han was stunned.
In his spiritual perception, Tuck didn't just move fast. He had seemingly entered another space—completely undetectable.
