Chapter 15 - Maidens

[1st POV]

It was an early morning patrol.

"You know, our little talk yesterday continued to stay in my mind. Specifically, about seeking revenge against the Gun Devil who took everything from you,"

"Hmm," Aki responded while massaging his temple. He was having a minor hangover, while I, as a devil hybrid, was completely fine, even though I drank twice as much as him.

"I asked myself, why am I not doing that? Why am I not seeking revenge against the Yakuza that tortured me for years?" I said.

"Maybe because they have all been captured and are in prison?" Aki said.

"Fuck prison, man. I'm talking about an eye for an eye. They eat me, I eat them," I said.

Which was a weird thing to say but I genuinely did not have an issue with eating a fellow human. I couldn't care less, and it was not because of the new Cannibal Devil inside of me.

"That seems fair," Aki said uncaringly, "How do humans taste like anyway?"

"I don't know," I shrugged. "Probably real good,"

"And how do devils taste?"

"Depends on what kind of devil they are. The stronger devils and food-type devils always taste good," I said.

Aki hummed thoughtfully as we continued to walk on the sidewalk.

"Then how did the Sex Devil taste?" I knew he would ask that, "If it depends on what type of devil they were, then it must taste good, right? Sex feels good,"

"Don't ask me that," I huffed.

"Were you bricked up while eating it?"

"....maybe,"

It was Saturday, so the city was emptier than on most days. Although it would be much busier when the morning rolls over. Saturday was usually busy because of shopping, people hanging out or going on dates.

While on our patrol, Aki bought a newspaper and on the front page was a familiar face. Or should I say a familiar devil?

"Look at this," he said while passing me the newspaper.

On the front page was none other than me. There was a picture too, of my gigantic pig form wrecking havoc on the small town. I skimmed through the article they wrote about me and let's just say they were not painting me in a good light.

Which was obvious because I destroyed everything.

But I was not painted as a villain either. It was more like I was considered a necessary evil for the devils that plagued the country. There were also some comments about the higher-ups of the Public Safety Commission who apologized for the incident while at the same time explaining how the destruction of the town was necessary.

"16 people dead," I read the casualty. The town was mostly empty but there were still some civilians when the battle took place.

"They are afraid of the Pig Devil," Aki commented.

"Good for me then, I don't care about their opinion," I said with a shrug, "Their fear only makes me stronger,"

It was basically a win-win for me. They fear me, I got strong. They celebrate me, I could still get strong from consuming devils and the fame would be nice.

Although it would be hard for me to get on the good side of the public now. It was one of my first incidents, and I ended up destroying a town, unlike the Chainsaw Devil, whose collateral was minimal while saving people in the anime.

I threw the newspaper in the trash can outside a fast-food restaurant. There were barely any public trash cans but those kinds of restaurants needed it.

"I was going to read that," Aki said but didn't stop me.

"Read the mood," I said with a chuckle.

"So what's your plan for today?" I asked while stretching my arms with a yawn.

"I have to catch breakfast with a girl from the first division. The one who arrives second will have to pay for the breakfast, so I want to find a devil to exterminate," he said.

"So a chance for free food?" I said and stopped, "Don't worry, I got you."

My nose enlarged slightly to take the shape of a pig and I began carefully taking in the scent in the air. Devils had a certain scent that was easy to differentiate.

"I think I found one," I said.

"Really?"

"Not sure, it smells horrible though," I said while taking a few sniffs, "Wait a minute, that's just your ass,"

He deadpanned at me. Not a single humor in his bone.

"I'm kidding. It's a devil," I said and my nose returned back to normal, "Although it's outside of our patrol area,"

"Let's go," he said.

And off we go, sprinting.

We ran along the sidewalk of the city. But Aki quickly became tired after ten minutes of running. He was not a superhuman athlete like me.

When his breathing got haggard and he slowed down, I scooped him up from the ground in a princess carry and ran with him in my arms.

"Put me down right now!!"

"Nope, the smell is getting stronger. I think it's going to attack something," I said and transformed into my hybrid mode so that I could leap on top of a building.

I leapt from rooftop to rooftop like a ninja to increase our travel speed.

It was so incredibly efficient to transform on command. Perhaps it had to do with that I was an animal devil hybrid and not a weapon devil hybrid like Katana Devil or Bomb Devil. I did not need to do something to activate my powers.

We reached the location after five minutes.

The devil there was a very minor devil. I think it was a fork devil or something, could be a spoon though, because it shot out both as projectiles.

We made quick work of the Devil. I said we but it was Aki who one-shot the devil with Kon. After the extermination was done and we were free from patrol duties, we headed back towards where Aki had a date.

He told me to leave, but I tagged along forcefully. I really wanted to see the girl whom Aki was interested in.

It took us ten more minutes to reach their designated restaurant. But oddly enough, the girl was already there.

"Oh she's pretty," I said with a thoughtful face when the girl ran up to us. She was waiting for Aki right in front of the restaurant.

And I knew who the girl was.

Himeno.

"Aki, you're early," she said when she reached us.

"And you're already here. How?" Aki asked.

"I don't have a patrol today."

"You set me up to lose," Aki said dryly.

"Should've seen it coming," she said while sticking out her tongue. If Himeno was truly from the first division, they had much more members than us so they could take turns covering and patrolling their territory.

"And who is the guy with you?" she asked finally turning to me.

"This is Jin,"

"Jin Nakahara? That guy?" she asked with a wide single eye because she wore an eyepatch.

"That's me," I said with a smile.

I was not lying when I said I was famous, especially in the Devil Hunter Society. At this point there was no Devil Hunter in Japan who did not know me. Even if they didn't know my name, at least they knew the Pig Devil that worked for the Public Safety Commission.

"Wow, you're taller than expected, and also better looking. Are you sure your devil is a pig?" she asked, very interested if her body language was to be believed. She was leaning towards me.

"I know this came out of nowhere but may I hug you?" I asked.

"Don't be weird," Aki pinched me and whispered.

But I didn't care. Her death was one of the first real horrible things that happened in the first season of the anime. I was glad to see her alive.

"Sure?" she said. Japanese people were not the physical type so allowing me to hug her said a lot about her character.

I bent my knees and hugged her with both arms. Then I held that for an uncomfortable while. Aki facepalmed on the side.

"Okay... this is weird,"

"I won't let you die this time. And I'll beat it into his skull about your feelings and make him reciprocate?" I said near her ear.

"W-wha?"

"Okay that's enough," Aki grabbed me by the collar and pulled me back, choking me.

"I'm sorry about that Himeno," he apologized.

"It's okay... he seems fun," she said.

"He really isn't," Aki said.

"I'm the absolute definition of fun for anyone who could hang out with you," I said, pushing him with my shoulder.

Aki was a tall dude too, standing at 6 feet while I stood at 6'1. His ugly ponytail made up for the one inch and we looked similar in height. We could rub shoulder to shoulder.

"I'm glad to see Aki has friends," Himeno said with a chuckle. "Should we go inside? You're gonna join us aren't you Nakahara?"

Aki looked at me, his face asking whether I was going to join.

"No thanks, I have my own maiden to attend to," I denied, "I'll leave you two alone for your date,"

Himeno had a small, silent blush. But she didn't look embarrassed or shy because she had a grin too. She was a woman who knew exactly what she wanted.

Aki was already 19, so it was about time he got a girl for himself. Maybe that will help him with getting over the clearly red flag Makima. He was three years older than me but also my age in my past life. It was one of the reasons why we became friends so quickly.

"Let's go then," Himeno said and pulled Aki by the hand, "You must try their tempura,"

I watched them enter the restaurant with a smile.

Then I turned around and headed towards the café I had in mind.

After all, I did say I would return. It would be a dick move to not come back.
