Work felt like torture today. Every document I tried to review blurred together, every meeting dragged on endlessly, and my thoughts kept spiraling back to the same question that had been haunting me since morning.
Had I made the right choice bringing her home with me?
Maybe I should have just found her a decent apartment somewhere safe, given her enough money to start over, and walked away. That would have been the smart thing to do. The detached thing to do.
But every time I replayed our conversation, I remembered how her hands trembled when she tried to thank me. How she looked ready to bolt at any second, like a wounded animal backed into a corner.
Whatever hell she had escaped from ran deeper than I could imagine. And frankly, I wasn't sure I wanted to know the full extent of it. What I already suspected was enough to make my blood boil.
