She had held herself together while he stood before her. But now, with no one around, her composure crumbled. Her knees weakened, and she sank to the ground, trembling. Silent tears streamed down her face.
"Madam!" Kayden hurried toward her, alarmed that she would really have a heart attack. "Are you alright?"
She gave a faint, broken shake of her head. "How could I be? My own son believes I'm selfish."
She looked up at him with doubts in her eyes. "Tell me… am I wrong for asking Summer to help Adrian? Why can't Gideon see that?" Her lips quivered. "I nearly lost Adrian. I cannot watch him fall apart again."
More tears slid down her cheeks.
"But Gideon thinks I don't care about him. He thinks I've ignored his pain."
