Chapter 23 - Chapter Twenty Three

Nonna Anita's POV

My heart pounded hard against my chest as I quickly entered my room and locked the door behind me. I can't believe that Maria could say such hurtful things. I feel like I'm nothing.

"Anita! Please open up for me." Charles hit against the door hard. He followed me right after I heard everything but I made sure to not stop until I reached my room.

I remained silent hoping that he'd leave. Truly I'm nothing but a maid with no education or good family background. I don't deserve him.

"Please, open up for me. I will get the spare keys and open up if you don't." His voice was stern and promising.

"Just leave, Sir. I don't want any problems. Please, I don't even know why I'm behaving like this."

"Open up, Anita. This is the last warning."

I stayed silent and still didn't open up. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be able to figure out which key would belong to the door. I gave him some minutes and didn't hear anything again. I took a deep breath and laid against my bed.

Then I heard the shuffling of keys at my door and in seconds my door was unlocked from outside. I pulled the covers over myself. Jeez look at a grown ass woman as myself behaving like some child because of him.

"Why are you here, Sir? I told you that you should leave."

He looked at me pointedly and approached my bedside slowly. "I don't like being defined, Anita. I told you to open the door."

I shifted my gaze and looked elsewhere. "I think you should go, Sir. It's not appropriate for you to be here."

He chuckled darkly and stood at my bedside. "You know, since after Sandra I promised myself that I would never bring a woman into my life again. She made me so resentful. But here I am enjoying your company and everything about you."

"I…I…."

"I notice the little things about you. How you touch your nose repeatedly when you're nervous. How you can't keep eye contact anytime you're lying to me and covering for one of Elena's numerous mistakes. How you look at my child as if she were yours." He then sat gently beside me and reached out holding my rough hands in his.

"Sir, please this is wrong. Whatever this is, we're not meant to be seen like this. Your sister was right, I'm not at your level."

"Shhhhh, I didn't ask for anyone's opinion in the first place. My sister is being her usual problematic self. You know one thing I'm known for is always getting what I want. I might be old but I haven't lost my game. I want you and that's it."

I shook my head vigorously, I've made up my mind. I have had feelings for him for so long but I've made sure to keep it buried. He was always too good for me. I wasn't as posh as Sandra and I have no renowned name.

"Sir, I don't want anything like that. If this gets messy I'll leave."

He paused for a while then bellowed in a fit of laughter as if something was so funny. I wondered what was so funny.

"Why are you laughing so hard?"

"You signed a contract when you got a job here and you can't leave unless under certain circumstances. That is not the case here so you'll either have to remain here or face charges."

"This is madness, Charles." I gasped at my mistake and quickly covered my mouth with my palm.

He looked at me in shock and then a full blown smile appeared on his face. He looked way younger and less tired.

"I love how you called my name. Hopefully you don't go back to the whole "Sir" thing. I have yearned for you to be mine for so long but I didn't want to hurt my daughter in case she wouldn't like it. Now she's married herself so I can work things out with you."

"No, Sir. I can't do this. Men have hurt me badly and I can't give my heart to another."

"I can understand your pain. My ex wife betrayed me and do you know what's worse?"

I shook my head, curious to hear more.

"My best friend, Dorian, who I thought was like family, had been the one who she had an affair with. I had broken ties with my own brother, Williams, thinking it was him. I can't even forgive myself yet."

"We all make stupid mistakes sometimes but it doesn't mean that we are horrible people." I looked at him sympathetically.

"You have no idea the kinds of things I've done already. I didn't become the most powerful godfather by being weak and easy. I'm no good man but you are what I want, you make me feel human again after so long."

"You should be going, Sir. This whole thing is already making me uncomfortable."

"Charles, you better not be messing with that nobody!" His mouthy sister, Maria, hit the door aggressively and continuously.

"You should go, she needs you. She's also right about everything. I don't want any trouble either, please leave."

He looked like he wanted to say something but he shook his head, stood up from the bedside and headed towards the door. Just as he placed his hands on the door knob he stopped. "You will be mine, Anita. Mark my words, some day."

My heart skipped at his words and I couldn't even say a word in return just kept my mouth open.

He closed the door behind him and I heard him arguing with his sister. Their voices soon faded off, making me aware that they walked away.

I placed my head back against my bed and screamed into my pillow. My heart wants whatever this is but my head is telling me otherwise. I don't want to get in any trouble nor do I enjoy the spotlight.

I know I'd be called a gold digger and other things, I don't want that for myself. I'm so scared, if this doesn't work out, I will be ridiculed.

My phone beeps, indicating that a message just came in. The moment I read it, my heart dropped and I felt like I couldn't breathe.

"Your time is ticking, do as you're told."
