Deacon's friend was a ridiculous man. While listening to Paul's interpretation of the shovel talk, Deacon had wanted to burst into laughter more than once. There was just no way that anybody would take Paul's words seriously.

From the stunned look on Slater's face though, Deacon could tell that Slater truly believed that Paul was capable of such violence. He wanted to tell her not to take the whole thing too seriously.

For some people, glasses served to make them look very intimidating and capable,( headmasters and lawyers came to mind).
