After Deacon had told her of his father's command the previous day, the easy-going mood that the two of them had cultivated had become strained, with Deacon going silent, becoming more withdrawn. A clear sign of nervousness, and him being uneasy had made Haley nervous as well.
She had thought that Deacon's unease was because the dinner would be nothing more than the Roth family wanting to come at her under the guise of civility. As a result, Haley had prepared herself to spend the evening being looked down upon by Roths.
When she had seen where they would be having their meal, she had known that Lucas Roth just had to be showing off in an effort to intimidate her. It was a well-known fact that even though the Slaters were rich, they did not like showing their wealth too much. But Haley had not felt intimidated in the least, and for a short period she had thought that Deacon's father had missed the mark when it came to making her uncomfortable.
