Evan was in a good mood—the kind that made the cramped interior of his sedan feel almost luxurious. Country music played softly from the radio, steady and familiar, matching the easy rhythm of his heartbeat.
He reached for his phone, the screen's glow reflecting faintly in his eyes as he dialed.
"Hey, what's up?" the man's voice crackled through the speaker.
Evan grinned, the smile stretching wide across his face.
"What do you mean, what's up?" Tell me you did the booking."
"Booking?"
Evan's eyes nearly popped out of his head. He stared at the empty passenger seat as if the man were sitting there, ready to be strangled.
"Don't you dare give me that, shitless whore!"
"Oh my god, seriously." A laugh erupted from the phone, warm and teasing.
"Of course I did it. Do you even know how impatient I've been to go on this trip with you?"
Evan let out a long, dramatic sigh of relief, the tension draining from his shoulders.
