Dr. Helena Hoffman was exactly what Emily expected...brilliant, efficient, and entirely unfazed by the highly unusual circumstances. When Clara had called ahead explaining she needed emergency DNA analysis with absolute confidentiality, Dr. Hoffman had simply cleared her afternoon schedule and prepared her most secure lab.
Now she looked at Emily with professional curiosity. "Ms. Mueller says you need maternal lineage confirmation with expedited results. That's highly irregular, but possible. However...." She paused. "I need to understand what I'm comparing your DNA against. You mentioned Queen Elara of Norvale?"
"I have samples," Emily said, producing the carefully preserved items she'd brought from the vault research...strands of hair from her mother's brush that she'd kept all these years, sealed in preservation containers. "These belonged to Queen Elara. I've had them since childhood."
