Chapter 148 - Chapter 148 — Director Mason Forbids Her From Doing Anything Ever Again

Director Mason issued the ban at exactly 7:18 a.m.

It was written.

It was printed.

It was taped to three different walls.

And it read, in all caps:

ARIA LANE IS FORBIDDEN FROM DOING ANYTHING.

Daniel stared at it for a long time.

"…Define anything."

Mason, bald head shining with righteous fury, didn't look away.

"ANYTHING."

The Law Is Announced

Mason gathered the remaining crew like a general addressing survivors.

"From this moment on," he declared,

"Aria Lane is NOT allowed to—"

He counted on his fingers.

"—run.

—jump.

—fall.

—react.

—improvise.

—breathe too fast."

Daniel raised a hand.

"Breathing feels non-negotiable."

Mason pointed at him.

"CONTROLLED breathing."

Aria Listens Seriously

Aria stood perfectly still.

Hands folded.

Expression neutral.

She nodded once.

"…Understood."

Daniel leaned toward Julian.

"She's lying."

Julian didn't disagree.

The Enforcement Begins (Immediately Fails)

Five minutes later—

A light stand began to wobble.

Not dangerously.

Just enough to notice.

Aria's eyes flicked toward it.

Mason shouted:

"DON'T YOU DARE."

She froze.

The stand tipped.

A PA yelped.

Aria took one step—

Mason screamed:

"ABSOLUTELY NOT."

The stand fell.

Missed everyone by centimeters.

Silence.

Aria lowered her foot.

"…I complied."

Mason rubbed his face.

"You did.

And that was worse."

The Safety Bubble

Mason implemented Phase Two.

Aria was surrounded.

Two PAs.

One stunt coordinator.

One Daniel.

She was escorted everywhere like a priceless artifact.

Daniel narrated constantly.

"She's walking.

She's blinking.

She's thinking—no wait, stop thinking."

Aria blinked.

"…Thinking is internal."

Mason yelled from across the set:

"THAT'S WHAT WORRIES ME."

The List Grows

Mason added to the sign.

ALSO FORBIDDEN:

Lifting objects

Not lifting objects

Standing near edges

Standing confidently

Aria read it carefully.

"…I will attempt uncertainty."

Daniel collapsed laughing.

Julian Tries Reason

Julian approached Mason quietly.

"You can't actually stop her from existing."

Mason looked tired.

"I can try."

"She's not reckless," Julian continued.

"She's prepared."

"That's worse," Mason replied instantly.

"Prepared people don't wait for permission."

Aria, overhearing, nodded.

"…That is correct."

Mason pointed at her without looking.

"SEE?!"

The Breaking Point

Later, during a simple walk-through—

No stunts.

No rigs.

No danger.

Aria followed the blocking exactly.

Then stopped.

"…Director Mason."

He stiffened.

"Yes?"

"The mark is incorrect."

He closed his eyes.

"Is it dangerous?"

"No."

"Then don't fix it."

"…It affects the camera angle."

Mason exhaled.

"…Fine."

She moved the mark.

Perfectly.

Efficiently.

Without flair.

Mason watched.

"…You did something."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"I said don't do anything."

She thought.

"…I did something small."

Mason laughed.

Broken.

Resigned.

"I hate semantics."

The Truth Everyone Knows

By lunch, it was obvious.

You couldn't forbid Aria Lane from doing anything.

Because doing things wasn't what made her dangerous.

Not reacting did.

Daniel summed it up best, mouth full of noodles:

"She's not breaking the rules."

"She is the rules."

Mason stared at his food.

"…I need a drink."

Closing Beat

At the end of the day, Mason tore the sign down.

Folded it carefully.

Put it in his bag.

He looked at Aria.

"…Fine.

Do things."

She nodded.

"…Carefully."

He sighed.

"That's all I ask."

Aria considered.

"…I will try."

Mason groaned.

And the set, somehow, felt safer.
