Of course, he didn't. I was aware of that. He only handled paperwork at home and made treatment decisions or urgent calls when a case was critical.
But I was still worried.

I began pacing the room, muttering under my breath. Jason was saying something I couldn't quite catch, while Mila remained by Harper's side. She was praying, hands clasped together, eyes squeezed shut.
"She is not dying, you know," Jason said.
I stopped and looked at him. He didn't seem to take this as seriously as I did. I couldn't tell if it was because it hadn't happened to him, or because he had seen too many cases like this and already knew how they ended.
I didn't.
And every damned second that passed felt like an eternity. To hell with the ambulance.
I wasn't going to stand here and wait.
"I'm taking her to the hospital," I said.
"Uh-uh." Jason shook his head and stepped in front of me, blocking my path as I moved toward Harper.
I narrowed my eyes at him.
