The guard smiled thinly, his lips curling around every word like venom.
"What do you think I should do with you, hm? Maybe line you up against the wall? Let the wolves practice?"
His gaze swept over me, slow and invasive, and my stomach knotted.
"Or maybe we save the girl for entertainment before we put a bullet in her skull."
I swallowed hard, the blood rushing in my ears.
Before I could speak, Joe's voice cut through, steady, defiant.
"If you're trying to scare us, officer, you're wasting your time. We've already lived through worse. The IDs aren't fake."
The officer's eyes narrowed. The guards behind him shifted, murmuring among themselves, and started closing in. The air was thick with tension, every boot on gravel sounding like thunder to my ears.
My hand trembled inside Joe's, my wolf whimpering, restless. But when he looked down at me, he didn't see tears.
He saw fire.
