----------------------------------------------------------
Bazett felt deeply uncomfortable with this memory.
She had deliberately buried it.
Having it dragged back out was even worse.
"Who are you?"
She pushed herself up from the ground, resentment clear in her eyes as she stared at Emiya.
Seeing that she had returned to herself, Emiya smiled lightly.
"Nice to meet you, Miss Bazett. I'm one of the Masters of this Holy Grail War-Emiya."
"I'm here to take you out."
Bazett snorted, anger flaring.
"Did you ever consider that I don't want to leave?"
"Of course I did," Emiya replied calmly.
Bazett: "..."
He knew she didn't want to leave.
And he woke her up anyway.
This man's personality was awful.
"Running away won't solve anything, Miss Bazett," Emiya said seriously.
"A dream is just a dream. Please come back to the real world with me."
"I don't want to go back," Bazett snapped.
"That won't work," Emiya said.
"I promised CĂș Chulainn I'd bring you out."
Bazett froze.
"Wasn't CĂș Chulainn taken by Kirei Kotomine?"
She hadn't forgotten.
Kotomine had severed her left arm along with her Command Seals, all for her Servant.
And Command Seals couldn't be disobeyed.
"It's true he took him," Emiya said.
"But I used a small trick and took him back. He's my Servant now."
Bazett looked him over.
"You managed to take CĂș Chulainn from Kirei Kotomine."
"...Good job."
Her feelings toward Kotomine were complicated.
Six years ago, she had been ordered to retrieve a magus experimenting with corpse-based soul recreation.
Kotomine, representing the Church, had been sent to eliminate him.
After their teams were wiped out, they chose to cooperate.
Two days later, the magus was dead.
Bazett retrieved the body.
They returned to their respective organizations.
After that, they worked together three more times.
Outside of missions, they grew close.
They quietly supported each other.
In truth, Kotomine didn't need help.
He simply wanted efficiency.
During that time, Bazett came to respect his strength.
Eventually, that respect turned into feelings.
So when Kotomine recommended her for the Holy Grail War, she didn't hesitate.
After arriving in Fuyuki City, she trusted him completely.
And then he betrayed her.
Stabbed her in the back.
That betrayal crushed her.
The pain of being betrayed by someone she cared for was unbearable.
So when she heard Emiya had taken CĂș Chulainn back from Kotomine, her first thought was simple.
Good.
He deserved it.
Then regret followed.
Emptiness.
Why did she trust him?
What kind of madness made her believe someone like that?
Emiya didn't know what she was thinking.
But her shifting expression made one thing obvious.
She was breaking down.
So he stayed silent.
After a while, he spoke again, gently inviting her back to the real world.
This time, Bazett didn't refuse.
She agreed.
A few minutes later, Emiya opened his eyes.
Medea was smiling at him.
"You did well, Master."
Emiya smiled back-then realized something.
He was lying on the sofa.
With his head resting on Medea's lap.
A lap pillow.
The legendary one.
He had met plenty of women before, but this was a first.
And it was Medea of all people.
After sitting up, he turned his head.
Bazett was lying on the floor.
Slowly, she opened her eyes.
"You're awake," CĂș Chulainn said.
He had a good impression of her.
After all, she was a descendant of the Red Branch Knights.
A successor to his comrades.
Bazett stood, scanning the room.
Her gaze eventually stopped on Emiya.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome," Emiya said as he stood.
His eyes shifted to her left arm.
"What about your arm?"
"Do you want me to heal it?"
Bazett didn't hesitate.
"If you can, please."
Emiya summoned the Greedy Dragon.
It bit into the severed end of her arm and poured in an immense amount of life force.
The cells reacted instantly.
Division.
Regeneration.
Flesh returned.
Bones grew.
In just minutes, a brand-new left hand formed.
Bazett flexed it.
Perfect.
No difference from before.
"Thank you," she said sincerely.
She could have created a replacement through other means.
But nothing compared to having her original arm restored.
Medea's eyes flickered.
"Master... this isn't magic, is it?"
She couldn't sense any magical energy.
"It's Nen," Emiya explained.
"The ability to control life energy."
"It's a different system. From another world."
"Unfortunately, aside from Bazett, none of you can cultivate it."
Nen controlled life energy.
Heroic Spirits weren't living beings.
But they weren't dead either.
Their bodies were made of magical energy.
After death, they returned to the Holy Grail.
They lacked the foundation for Nen.
The same applied to liches, skeletons, and headless horsemen.
Nen favored living organisms.
Even so, Emiya explained the method.
Medea was interested.
So he didn't hide anything.
Bazett felt uneasy.
She could tell-Nen wasn't inferior to magic.
"Is it really okay to tell me something like this?"
Emiya waved it off.
"It's just a cultivation method."
"Mages would probably look down on it anyway."
Most mages were mentally unbalanced.
That was an ordinary person's perspective.
And Emiya was ordinary.
In the Type-Moon world, most mages devoted their lives to one thing.
The Root.
To reach it, they would do anything.
Morality didn't matter.
The Holy Grail War looked like a wish-granting ritual.
In truth, it was a massive system created by the Einzbern, Tohsaka, and Makiri families to reach the Root.
The Winter Maiden, Justicia von Einzbern, sacrificed herself willingly for it.
That alone explained everything.
Another example was Araya Souren.
Countless disasters, all for direct access to the Root.
Then there was the Mage's Association.
Designated Sealing orders.
Talent confiscation.
Anything for the Root.
To Emiya, a system like Nen-unable to reach the Root-was meaningless to them.
Even if they discovered a Nen user, they'd just seal them.
As for taking Nen seriously?
Mage arrogance wouldn't allow it.
Medea, however, was fascinated.
Life energy control had its own elegance.
She even considered integrating it into her magic system.
Not something done overnight.
Fortunately, she wasn't in a hurry.
Seven days or not, she was confident she could remain in this world.
But first-
She needed a physical body.
And for that, she needed the Holy Grail.
Which meant purifying it.
So after Bazett awakened, they headed straight for the Great Hollow beneath Ryuudou Temple.
Medea planned to set up a large-scale purification spell.
There was just one issue.
Purifying All the World's Evil required an enormous amount of magical energy.
Far more than she currently had.
So Emiya brought Medea, CĂș Chulainn, Artoria, and Bazett to the Dungeon of the Danmachi world.
Monster hunting.
Magic stone collection.
Emiya and Medea were used to it.
Artoria and Bazett, visiting another world for the first time, were surprised.
Only briefly.
CĂș Chulainn was thrilled.
Endless monsters.
Endless fights.
Perfect.
He charged in, spear raised.
Unstoppable.
Invincible.
Artoria and Bazett followed.
So did Emiya and Medea.
The five pushed forward together.
Monsters screamed.
Magic stones piled up.
Before long, even CĂș Chulainn started to feel bored.
This kind of musou-style slaughter didn't hold his interest for long.
