"DXD: Transfer Student"Chapter 226: Sleeping Together
It was nearly eleven, but nobody showed the slightest intention of heading to bed.
Nino and Miku had secretly planned to outlast each other, hoping to steal some alone time with Draconis Yi, but neither was willing to give in. Their mutual stubbornness had led to this late-night standoff—and both were getting a little frustrated.
Draconis Yi glanced at them, puzzled. Normally, the sisters would have retreated to their rooms by now. He cleared his throat, trying to nudge them toward sleep.
"It's getting late. Aren't you all going to bed?"
"Uh… I just can't sleep, knowing we're heading home tomorrow," Nino blurted out, grasping for an excuse. "It's rare for all of us to get out together."
"Now that you mention it, that's probably why I'm not tired either," Yotsuba said, eyes wide with realization. "I kept wondering why I wasn't sleepy at all…"
"No, you're just a ball of energy," Itsuki muttered, helpless.
"Hehe…" Yotsuba scratched her head, then lit up with an idea. "Hey, why don't we all sleep together tonight? We can turn off the lights, lie around and talk—doesn't that sound fun?"
The suggestion hung in the air. For a moment, everyone was silent, tempted.
"Is there enough space for that?" Ichika asked, tilting her head thoughtfully.
"If we clear out the biggest room upstairs, we can lay out futons on the floor!" Yotsuba replied, as if she'd been planning this for ages. "I've already measured everything out!"
"If we squeeze a bit, six futons should fit," Nino murmured, calculating.
Draconis Yi blinked, jumping in. "Six? Why me? You want me in on your girl talk?"
"Huh? Of course you have to join!" the sisters chorused, unusually united.
Draconis Yi just stared. Good thing Grandpa wasn't around—if he knew his five precious granddaughters wanted Draconis Yi sleeping with them, he'd probably burst in for an over-the-shoulder throw.
But there was no stopping the sisters' excitement. Draconis Yi could only go along, helping with the preparations.
After half an hour of shuffling furniture and giggling chaos, they finally had six futons arranged in a circle, heads together at the center.
Draconis Yi surveyed the scene, defeated. What was the fun in this, anyway? Wouldn't a proper bed be more comfortable?
Once everyone had settled in, the lights were switched off, save for a single standing lamp glowing softly in the middle.
"So… let's tell ghost stories!" Yotsuba suggested, practically bouncing with excitement.
Draconis Yi groaned. Why ghost stories now? Didn't anyone want to sleep?
"No way, I don't want insomnia," Nino shot back.
Ichika, Miku, and Itsuki all shook their heads, sending Yotsuba's spirits crashing.
"Aw, we finally got everyone together…"
Of the six, only Draconis Yi lay on his back, staring at the ceiling. "Yotsuba, aren't you the one most scared of ghost stories?"
"Uh… well, it just fits the mood, you know…"
"Let's just tell regular stories," Itsuki waved her hand. "Like the bedtime stories Mom used to tell us."
The room fell quiet. For a moment, nostalgia pressed in, bittersweet.
"…Kind of makes me miss her," Yotsuba whispered, voice soft with longing.
No one replied, but the silence said enough. Being here, at Grandpa's place, brought back memories of their mother—long evenings spent listening to her stories.
Ichika, ever the mood-lifter, piped up. "Okay, but who's going to tell the story? I'll say it now: I've always been the listener."
Her question stumped the group. Their mother had always been the storyteller. Now, all eyes turned to Draconis Yi.
He sighed, feeling the weight of their gazes. Rolling over, he propped his chin on his hands, lazy and resigned.
"…Guess I'll give it a shot."
Truth was, Draconis Yi had never told a bedtime story before. He'd never even listened to one. But he could improvise.
"This is a true story. Long, long ago…"
For the next ten minutes, he spun a tale, weaving words together until the story ended abruptly.
"…To find out what happens next, tune in next time."
"Eh?! That's it?" Yotsuba gasped, wide-eyed. Even though Draconis Yi thought the story was dull, she'd listened with rapt attention.
Draconis Yi smiled, noticing the gentle sound of steady breathing nearby.
On either side, Ichika and Itsuki had drifted off, fast asleep.
"Shh," he whispered, signaling the others to quiet down. Then, with a gentle smile, he spoke softly:
"My beautiful little princesses, it's time for bed."
The words caught Nino, Miku, and Yotsuba off guard. Their mother used to say the same thing. Tears pricked at their eyes, memories welling up.
Suddenly, Ichika—who'd been sound asleep—sat up.
She looked uncomfortable, tugging at her clothes, instinctively trying to strip down.
"No way!" Nino, Miku, and Yotsuba leapt into action, tackling Ichika before she could shed a single layer. They knew her sleep-naked habit all too well.
Ichika: "Huh?"
Draconis Yi: "…"
He sighed, exhausted. He'd just managed to lull the little princess to sleep, and now she was up again.
The chaos continued until nearly 1:30 AM, before everyone finally collapsed, too tired to move.
…
The next morning, Draconis Yi woke with a strange feeling—someone else was in his futon.
He opened his eyes to see a beautiful, peaceful face inches away.
Uh… which one was this?
The quintuplets' ability to confuse was at its peak in moments like these. Even Draconis Yi couldn't immediately tell which sister had snuck into his bed.
He glanced around. Ichika's futon was empty—she'd migrated to Nino's spot. The sisters had chosen beds by age last night, but thanks to Ichika's sleepwalking, everyone seemed to have shifted.
Given who'd been closest last night…
Draconis Yi made a guess.
Itsuki?
