"DXD: Transfer Student"Chapter 227: Departure for the Underworld
On the ride home, Itsuki's face was still taut, eyes fixed on the passing scenery—anything but Draconis Yi. Last night, for reasons she still couldn't explain, she'd somehow ended up in his futon. The morning chaos had been legendary.
All four sisters had stared at her in utter disbelief. Itsuki wished she could vanish into the floor. She'd fallen asleep mid-story, and the next thing she knew, she was waking up beside Draconis Yi, none the wiser about how she'd gotten there.
As the group boarded the train for home, a quiet sense of longing settled over them. Summer vacation was about to begin, and it would be weeks before they saw Draconis Yi again.
"Promise you'll message us as soon as you're back—and take care of yourself, okay?" Ichika smiled, giving him the perfect imitation of a doting wife.
"Don't worry. Time flies. And you all have to keep up with your studies, too." Draconis Yi returned her smile, then leaned in and kissed each of the sisters gently on the cheek. Their faces flushed with shy delight as he waved goodbye, stepping into the teleportation circle.
Days blurred past. Summer vacation arrived right on schedule—the last day of school had finally come. The halls buzzed with excitement as students prepared to dive into the long break.
"So, Asia, what are your plans for summer vacation? Going anywhere fun?" Kiryuu Aika, Asia and Xenovia's best friend, asked with a bright smile.
"Um… I've never had such a long vacation before, so I really don't know what to do…" Asia admitted, anxious but clearly excited.
Life as a devil had been a world apart from her old days. Xenovia nodded in agreement; back in the church, rules had always kept her in check. Now, free from those shackles, she could chase after whatever she wanted. The taste of freedom was intoxicating.
…
Clubroom, after school.
Draconis Yi wrapped up his last commission early and returned to the clubroom. He'd already said his goodbyes to the quintuplets. Mai was busy filming—a quick hello had to suffice. Yor's "fake boyfriend" duties had been handled, and he'd planned to use business trips as cover for the next few days.
With everything settled, Draconis Yi finally exhaled. Now he could head for the Underworld without worry.
The teleportation circle shimmered to life. Rias and Akeno appeared, looking satisfied—everyone in the club had finished their preparations.
"All set?" Rias asked, smiling.
Everyone nodded. With a wave of her hand, Rias summoned a magical portal.
"Let's get going. Sona and her group are waiting."
Stepping through, Draconis Yi found himself in a bustling train station.
"President, where are we?" Asia asked, eyes wide.
"This is the city's main station," Rias replied, gesturing to the signs overhead.
Draconis Yi frowned. Why a train station for a trip to the Underworld? Did they really board trains to get there? It was nothing like he'd imagined.
"I thought we'd at least open up some kind of alternate dimension," he muttered.
Rias laughed. "Maintaining a separate dimension takes a ton of resources. Merging with a human train station is much easier—we can even outsource vehicle maintenance."
Draconis Yi blinked. "That… actually makes sense."
Under Rias's guidance, everyone boarded the train.
"Don't be fooled by appearances," Akeno said, catching their confusion. "This isn't your average train. It's a special express—bound for the Underworld. It doesn't run in the human world."
Draconis Yi had already noticed the intricate magic circles carved into the train's hull.
Footsteps echoed down the aisle. Sona Sitri entered, her peerage trailing behind. Saji Genshirou, standing just behind Sona, spotted Draconis Yi and shouted, "Master!"
Draconis Yi just sighed. Saji was a dreamer, hoping to win over his own master, Sona, by apprenticing himself to Draconis Yi—the man who'd already "conquered" his own master, Rias. Too bad Sona didn't seem interested in romance.
Poor guy.
Rias shot Draconis Yi a look. He shrugged. He'd never agreed to this "master" thing, and matchmaking was the last thing on his mind.
"Why's the Student Council President here?" Xenovia asked, curious.
"The Underworld's huge," Sona replied, smiling. "Since Rias was heading back, we thought we'd hitch a ride."
Sona's gaze lingered on Rias, her tone playful. "So—you're all ready?"
"…Ready for what?" Rias's cheeks colored, rare for her.
Sona chuckled, her eyes flicking to Draconis Yi with a teasing glint. Sometimes she really did envy Rias—finding a peerage member who was both terrifyingly strong and utterly devoted. With someone like that around, life's headaches faded away.
The train rumbled to life, sliding smoothly into the void.
"It'll take about an hour to reach the Underworld," Rias announced. "We're passing through the dimensional barrier now. Everyone, get some rest."
The group nodded, and Rias wandered off with Sona to chat.
Asia and Xenovia pressed their faces to the windows, marveling at the kaleidoscopic scenery swirling outside. Draconis Yi watched them, smiling softly. They looked genuinely happy.
Then he noticed Koneko Toujou sitting alone, silver hair gleaming, eyes distant. Something was weighing on her mind.
Draconis Yi walked over, settling beside her. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her gently into his embrace.
"What's on your mind?" he asked, voice low.
"…Nothing," Koneko murmured, hesitating as if she wanted to say more but couldn't.
"You know you can't keep things bottled up," Draconis Yi said, his smile gentle.
"I know." Koneko managed a small smile, but it didn't quite reach her eyes.
Draconis Yi's concern deepened. "Don't worry about causing trouble. I'm confident I can help you with whatever comes."
He leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to her lips.
