Eastern Continent, Zouwu Protection Base.

Green mountains rose on every side, wreathed in drifting mist.

"Perfect score on the written exam for Zouwu husbandry knowledge." The base staff member in the deep-green work uniform looked up at Lucien, a trace of surprise in his voice. "We haven't seen one of those in years. No wonder Mr. Scamander personally guaranteed you. All that's left is one successful 'joyride,' and you'll have your qualification."

Lucien nodded. "Thank you. I appreciate the help. Is there a time limit or range requirement for the joyride?"

Even though he'd already heard the man speak earlier, that fluent Mandarin still caught the staff member off guard. If not for the unmistakably Western features, he might have mistaken the boy for a local.

"Zouwu love riding the wind. Their range can't be limited to a single park—even an entire mountain range feels small to them. A 'joyride' simply means the wizard handler has to keep up with the Zouwu and make sure it comes back. Accidents usually happen when the Zouwu gets too excited, throws its rider, and then runs off to play on its own…"

Lucien filed the key point away. Good thing he hadn't forgotten his true mother tongue. His accent should be clean enough.

By the time he finished this entire Zouwu training process, he could probably sit for a proper keeper's license.

He wondered if there was any chance of testing for a panda license someday. In his previous life he'd never had the opportunity—locals in Sichuan couldn't even keep them privately, let alone an outsider like him.

The staff member continued explaining as he led the two of them past low fences into a much wider stretch of grassland.

In the center of the field, a massive feline creature lay quietly.

It was the size of an elephant, its body covered in tiger-like stripes, a wild yet radiant mane of multicolored hair cascading around its neck that shifted and shimmered in the afternoon light. Four curved fangs protruded from the sides of its mouth, clearly visible even when closed.

Most striking of all was the tail—longer than the body itself, richly layered in brilliant colors, the tip curling slightly like a banner woven from living silk.

A Zouwu.

Fierce and ferocious in appearance, gentle by nature.

Zouwu were considered "benevolent beasts" of the magical world. They only ate animals that had died of natural causes.

In truth they were more like enormous cats—utterly helpless against anything that made noise and looked like a toy. Easy to soothe once you knew how.

Sensing people approaching, the Zouwu suddenly lifted its great head. Those enormous eyes turned toward the three of them and settled on the boy in the middle—Lucien.

Newt and the staff member stopped in perfect unspoken agreement, leaving Lucien to continue alone.

As he drew closer, the Zouwu showed none of the instinctive wariness one might expect. It neither retreated nor growled.

Instead it rose and walked forward at a leisurely pace, covering the distance in a few long strides. Then it lowered its head and gently butted its enormous, fluffy skull straight into Lucien's chest.

The entire motion was completely natural, like an old friend greeting someone it had known for years.

The staff member simply stared as Lucien ruffled the great head a few times. A moment later, soft currents of air rose around the Zouwu and lifted Lucien smoothly onto its back.

Watching this, the long-time Zouwu keeper was thoroughly confused.

This was not how the process was supposed to go.

A first meeting, and the Zouwu was already allowing a stranger to ride—no, not allowing. Actively inviting?

The first contact between a keeper and a Zouwu always required patient interaction. He had fully expected Lucien to produce a bell or a feather wand or some other cat-appropriate offering, to work for the creature's approval the way every previous candidate had done.

What the staff member could not know was that, to a creature that spent its life riding the wind, the pure wind element surrounding this human boy felt extraordinarily clean. The air itself seemed to flow more smoothly around him, as though the wind simply preferred to stay near him.

The Zouwu suddenly let out a low rumble. The air currents around them surged. In the space of a single breath, boy and beast vanished from sight, carried away like a leaf on the wind.

Staring at the empty sky where they had disappeared, the staff member's mouth hung open. He turned to Newt almost without thinking.

They didn't just… run off, did they?

It took him a long moment to close his mouth again. "Truly, heroes appear young." He shook his head, a note of regret in his voice. "A shame someone like him won't stay in one small place. Otherwise I'd love to poach him for our base."

Newt: "This is the largest Zouwu protection base in the world. How can you call it a small place?"

The staff member sighed helplessly. "Can't help it. Every magical creature keeper who qualifies here wants to transfer into the panda program. Of course, I still think Zouwu are the cutest magical creatures of all!"

Newt was left momentarily speechless. Pandas were the national treasure of this country—wildly popular in both the wizarding and Muggle worlds.

As for magical abilities… well. They ate. Pandas could even digest metal. Their appetites and digestion were legendary—iron stomachs in the most literal sense.

And because they looked almost identical to ordinary animals when they were being cute, it was convenient to display them openly to Muggles. No need for elaborate concealment.

Newt gazed toward the direction the Zouwu had vanished. From far away in the sky came a distant, echoing roar, scattered by the wind.
