Aboard the Grafton family's private jet.
Beyond the window, clouds stretched out in a slow, endless white blanket.
Lucien leaned against the seat by the window, eyes resting on the flowing sea of cloud below.
"Some wizards even call airplanes the Muggle version of flying broomsticks or magic carpets," Newt said, lifting his teacup for a casual sip. "Once you get used to them, though, they're actually quite convenient."
Lucien smiled. Newt was more familiar with Muggle transportation than most. According to him, there had been periods in his youth when certain countries temporarily barred him from entry, forcing him to experiment with every possible method of "smuggling" himself across borders—both magical and Muggle.
The process of adopting the Zouwu this time had seemed almost effortless, but that was largely thanks to Newt's reputation in the field of magizoology. Over the decades, countries large and small had come to him whenever their magical creatures faced difficult problems. The network of connections he had built was extensive.
"Because this was an official keeping application," Newt continued, "you'll need to send observation and research reports back to the base at regular intervals. Heh… that part should feel familiar to you."
Their very first exchange of letters had included detailed observational notes on magical creatures. It had left a deep impression on Newt.
"A Zouwu is still relatively straightforward. If you ever wanted to keep something like a panda, that would be a different story entirely. Creatures of that level—I can only apply to keep them myself, and even then the process would take quite a while."
Lucien blinked in mild surprise. He really had thought about keeping a panda. So private ownership was theoretically possible?
Catching the spark of interest in Lucien's expression, Newt smiled. "You actually want a panda?"
Lucien nodded. Who wouldn't want a chubby black-and-white dumpling of their own?
"In that case," Newt said, "you could start by publishing papers in the field of magizoology, compiling relevant books, and building a name for yourself in academic circles. Anything that benefits magical creature conservation would help. Solving a few incidents involving that country's magical creatures wouldn't hurt either…"
As Newt offered advice, a new thought suddenly occurred to Lucien. Magical creature-related potions or alchemical tools might also work, right?
Something that could treat common racial diseases, or improve breeding rates. Pandas were notoriously difficult breeders, after all…
Using the panda as a springboard, Newt continued promoting the cause of magical creature conservation for a while longer. He took another sip of tea and set the cup gently back on the small table.
"Speaking of which—now that you've seen a Zouwu riding the wind with your own eyes, has your research into flight magic made any new progress?"
When Lucien had first asked Newt for help locating a Zouwu, he had already explained his purpose: he wanted to observe the creature's innate magic in hopes of developing a new form of flight magic.
Naturally, the existence of the system was never mentioned.
The loan task attached to the Master-level Wind Element Magical Patterns required the development of a flight magic. The element of wind was naturally linked to flight, and Lucien had recently made some progress with transforming mana circuits as well. The idea of referencing the Zouwu's racial magic had come to him almost immediately.
Zouwu were unique to the East, masters of riding the wind, capable of covering a thousand li in a single day.
Starting from his already advanced control over the wind element and his growing skill with circuit transformation, the odds of successfully developing a flight magic seemed higher.
"My thinking is much clearer now," Lucien said, lightly tapping the window frame with one fingertip. "Originally I planned to use wind element to lift the body. But after watching the Zouwu, I realized its flight isn't about 'controlling the wind' at all. Its body simply becomes part of the wind. So I'm considering a different approach—perhaps starting from the mana circuits themselves."
"Mana circuits?" Newt's smile faded slightly, his tone turning serious. "That's not something to take lightly. Plenty of wizards have tried to perfectly imitate the innate abilities of magical creatures. Most of them failed because of the circuits. A human wizard's mana circuits are fixed from birth—like a Muggle's blood vessels and nerves. Tampering with them carelessly can cause magical instability, loss of control over spellcasting… or, in the worst cases, permanent destruction of the circuits. You'd never be able to use magic normally again." He paused, then added, "In many countries, this kind of research is considered forbidden by the Ministry of Magic."
"I understand your concern," Lucien replied calmly. "But I've already made some preliminary progress in this area."
As he spoke, a faint silver light flickered deep within his ink-green eyes.
Newt could not see the changes occurring inside Lucien's body. What he could see was a soft, luminous aura rising around the boy.
Lucien's already refined features gradually softened and grew more delicate. The line of his jaw became subtler. A touch of striking beauty settled between his brows and eyes. The tips of his hair silently took on a silver-white sheen that caught the light in tiny fragments.
On the exposed skin of his wrists and the side of his neck, a faint pearlescent glow appeared, as though moonlight had settled across his skin.
In no more than two or three seconds, his entire presence had transformed.
Newt, who was intimately familiar with the traits of countless magical creatures, recognized the signs almost at once.
"Veela?"
