The rain had been falling for three days.
Beyond the eastern hills of Greyhaven stood a territory known as Blackridge.
It was a land of iron mines, stone fortresses, and exhausted villages.
And above all of it stood one man.
Lord Garrick Dorne.
He was not royalty.
He did not need to be.
He had soldiers.
He had money.
He had fear.
That was enough.
For years, Garrick had ruled Blackridge like a private kingdom. His soldiers collected impossible taxes from the villages, seized food from farmers, and crushed anyone who questioned his authority.
The people hated him.
But hatred meant nothing when there was no one strong enough to challenge him.
That changed on a cold morning.
A group of soldiers stood outside Blackridge's eastern gate.
There were only a few hundred of them.
No grand army.
No royal banners.
No famous generals.
Just men and women wearing mismatched armor, carrying weapons gathered from wherever they could find them.
At the center stood a young man with dark hair and a calm expression.
Seydric Voss.
The Iron Commander.
He looked at the fortress ahead.
"How many?"
The soldier beside him swallowed.
"Approximately eight hundred defenders inside the fortress. Another four hundred scattered throughout the territory."
Seydric nodded.
"And us?"
"Two hundred and sixty-three."
Silence.
One soldier nervously laughed.
"Commander... are we really attacking?"
Seydric turned toward him.
"Yes."
The soldier stared.
"With two hundred and sixty-three?"
Seydric looked back at the fortress.
"No."
His eyes sharpened.
"With everyone who is tired of living beneath it."
Inside Blackridge, Garrick Dorne received the report.
"Two hundred?"
He laughed.
His officers joined him.
"Let them come."
Garrick leaned back in his chair.
"By sunset, their families will know what happens when fools challenge Blackridge."
He didn't understand.
That was his mistake.
Because Seydric had not come to fight an army.
He had come to create one.
The first attack began at dawn.
Seydric raised his hand.
"First formation."
The soldiers moved.
Not perfectly.
Not yet.
But they moved.
Shields locked.
Spears aligned.
Archers positioned themselves behind them.
The defenders fired.
"SHIELDS!"
The command echoed.
The front line dropped simultaneously.
Arrows struck wood.
Then Seydric raised his hand again.
"Advance."
The entire formation moved forward.
One step.
Then another.
Then another.
The defenders expected chaos.
Instead, they found discipline.
Every soldier seemed to know where the others would be.
When one man stepped forward, another covered him.
When someone stumbled, two people immediately filled the gap.
When the enemy attempted to flank them, Seydric had already positioned another unit there.
A captain watching from the fortress wall frowned.
"How are they doing this?"
Another officer whispered.
"He's controlling them."
"No."
The captain watched Seydric.
"He isn't controlling them."
His expression changed.
"They're thinking like one army."
Seydric's ability was Leadership.
It wasn't simply charisma.
It wasn't persuasion.
It was something far more terrifying.
When Seydric accepted someone as part of his force, his presence connected their instincts.
Their movements became sharper.
Their courage strengthened.
Their understanding of formation became almost instinctive.
An ordinary soldier became better.
A trained soldier became exceptional.
And when enough people gathered beneath Seydric...
They became something else entirely.
An army.
By midday, the eastern wall had fallen.
Garrick ordered reinforcements.
"Push them back!"
The fortress gates opened.
Hundreds of soldiers charged.
Seydric looked at them.
Then he smiled.
"Second formation."
The battlefield changed.
His army separated.
The center retreated.
The enemy followed.
Then the left wing closed.
The right wing closed.
The defenders suddenly found themselves surrounded.
"NOW!"
Seydric's voice cut through the battlefield.
His soldiers attacked simultaneously.
The enemy formation collapsed.
Not because Seydric was stronger.
Because every soldier beneath him understood exactly when to move.
Exactly when to stop.
Exactly when to strike.
Garrick watched from the fortress.
For the first time in years...
He felt fear.
By sunset, Blackridge belonged to Seydric.
Garrick was brought before him.
The ruler looked at the young commander with disbelief.
"You think this changes anything?"
Seydric said nothing.
Garrick laughed bitterly.
"The crown will destroy you."
Seydric looked toward the villages beyond the fortress.
"They can try."
He walked past Garrick.
Then stopped.
"Your reign ends here."
The people of Blackridge slowly emerged from their homes.
They expected another tyrant.
Another army.
Another man demanding obedience.
Instead, they saw something strange.
Seydric's soldiers were distributing food.
Repairing gates.
Opening storehouses.
Removing Garrick's symbols from government buildings.
A young boy approached Seydric.
"Are you our new lord?"
Seydric looked down at him.
"No."
"Then who are you?"
Seydric looked toward the eastern sky.
"A soldier."
The boy tilted his head.
"For who?"
Seydric smiled faintly.
"For someone you haven't heard of yet."
That night, Seydric climbed the highest tower of Blackridge.
The fortress was silent beneath him.
He reached into his cloak.
Inside was a black banner.
Its symbol was simple.
A dark crest surrounded by strange silver markings.
The symbol Elias had given them.
Seydric attached it to the highest pole.
The wind caught it.
The black banner unfolded above Blackridge.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then the people below began staring upward.
They didn't know the meaning of the symbol.
Not yet.
But they would.
Seydric stood beneath it.
"The first territory."
His eyes moved toward the distant horizon.
"Completed."
Far away, inside a dark room in Greyhaven, Elias opened his eyes.
The black book beside him whispered.
"One."
Elias smiled.
"Good."
Then he turned the page.
"Now let's see what the others can do."
