Chapter 11 - The Power In a Voice

The territory of Eldermere looked beautiful from a distance.

Green fields.

White stone buildings.

Golden towers.

A river running through the center.

But beauty could hide terrible things.

Eldermere belonged to Duke Alaric Vane.

He was known throughout the kingdom as a generous noble.

A patron of the arts.

A supporter of the royal court.

A respectable man.

That was the story.

The truth was different.

His people lived beneath crushing taxes.

His soldiers enforced his laws without mercy.

Anyone who spoke against him was silenced.

And everyone knew it.

They simply pretended not to.

Then Lyra Veyne entered the city.

Alone.

She walked through the main street wearing a dark cloak.

People avoided her.

Soldiers watched her.

She didn't care.

She stopped in the middle of the marketplace.

Then she spoke.

"Everyone."

Her voice wasn't loud.

Yet the entire marketplace became silent.

Heads turned.

Lyra lifted her eyes.

"Listen."

The word carried something unnatural.

Every person heard it clearly.

Even those standing hundreds of feet away.

Lyra's ability had evolved.

Absolute Decree.

Her voice was no longer merely a command.

It was becoming authority itself.

Duke Alaric heard about her within minutes.

"Bring her to me."

Twenty soldiers surrounded Lyra.

Their commander stepped forward.

"By order of Duke Vane, you're under arrest."

Lyra looked at him.

"Lower your weapons."

The soldiers hesitated.

Then their weapons slowly lowered.

The commander stared.

"What..."

Lyra walked forward.

"Tell your duke I'm coming."

The soldiers moved aside.

Alaric was waiting inside his palace.

"You have an interesting ability."

Lyra said nothing.

He smiled.

"You could become useful."

"No."

His smile faded.

"You misunderstand."

"No."

Lyra looked directly at him.

"You misunderstand."

Alaric's eyes narrowed.

"Do you know who I am?"

"Yes."

"And yet you walk into my palace alone?"

Lyra stepped closer.

"You're going to tell the truth."

Alaric laughed.

"About what?"

"Everything."

Silence.

Lyra raised one finger.

"Speak."

The duke's mouth opened.

His expression changed.

Words began pouring out.

Taxes.

Secret agreements.

Illegal punishments.

Deals with mercenary groups.

Payments made to corrupt officials.

The names of nobles who had helped him.

The marketplace outside became silent as servants and guards listened.

Alaric desperately tried to stop speaking.

He couldn't.

Lyra's command held him.

The truth spread through the palace like fire.

Then through the city.

By sunset, the people knew.

The perfect duke was a lie.

The soldiers were the hardest part.

Hundreds of them gathered outside the palace.

They had served Alaric for years.

Some feared him.

Others depended on him.

Lyra walked toward them.

She looked across the crowd.

"You were told that obedience made you strong."

Her voice carried across the courtyard.

"It didn't."

She paused.

"You were made afraid."

The soldiers remained silent.

Lyra continued.

"Look at the people you've been ordered to protect."

Slowly, soldiers turned.

They saw farmers.

Merchants.

Children.

Families.

People who had spent years living beneath their authority.

Lyra raised her hand.

"No more."

The command echoed.

Some soldiers dropped their weapons.

Then another.

Then another.

Until hundreds stood without weapons.

The duke's army had disappeared without a battle.

Alaric ran.

He reached the eastern gate before Lyra found him.

He looked back.

She stood beneath the palace archway.

"You can't do this!"

Lyra said nothing.

Alaric shouted:

"Who are you?"

Lyra walked toward him.

"The Voice of Ruin."

He stepped backward.

"And who do you serve?"

Lyra stopped.

Her eyes became cold.

"Someone who intends to change this world."

Alaric swallowed.

"Who?"

Lyra smiled faintly.

"You'll know."

By midnight, Eldermere had changed.

The duke's symbols were removed.

His treasury was opened.

His soldiers stood down.

His officials were dismissed.

For the first time in years, the people gathered in the streets without fear.

Lyra climbed the palace tower.

She carried the black banner.

The same crest.

She planted it above Eldermere.

The people looked upward.

Some whispered.

Others pointed.

Nobody understood what the symbol meant.

But now there were three territories carrying it.

Blackridge.

Ironveil.

Eldermere.

And the kingdom had begun to notice.

Far away, Elias stood beside a window.

Three black markers rested on his map.

His fingers moved across them.

"Three territories."

He looked toward the royal capital.

"A beginning."

The book whispered.

"Three."

Elias closed his eyes.

Then smiled.

"Good."

But he wasn't thinking about the territories.

He was thinking about what came next.

The organization needed a home.

A place no royal could find.

A place beyond ordinary geography.

A place where an army could grow without the kingdom realizing how large it had become.

Elias turned away from the map.

The black book floated beside him.

He raised his hand.

Space itself began to bend.

The room trembled.

A doorway appeared.

Beyond it...

There was nothing.

Only darkness.

Elias stepped through.

And smiled.

"Let's build."
