Chapter 14 - The Merchant Lucian

The Veiled Sanctum was quiet beneath the artificial night.

While thousands slept, Elias remained awake.

Deep within one of the Sanctum's newly constructed laboratories, dozens of glass containers covered the table before him.

Leaves.

Roots.

Crystals.

Dried flowers.

Powdered minerals.

Several ingredients came from Blackridge.

Others had been brought from Ironveil.

A few were things Elias had never seen in Dregmoore before.

He held a small silver vial between his fingers.

Inside was a dark red liquid.

The liquid moved strangely whenever the light touched it.

Elias stared at it.

"Again."

He poured another mixture into the container.

The liquid immediately began bubbling.

He watched carefully.

Too much.

He added a single drop from another vial.

The bubbling stopped.

Silence.

Elias waited.

One second.

Two.

Five.

The liquid turned completely clear.

He smiled.

"Finally."

He picked up the vial.

This wasn't ordinary medicine.

Elias had spent weeks studying the plants and materials available throughout the territories the Sanctum had acquired.

He had learned something important.

Magic wasn't the only thing capable of changing the human body.

Certain natural substances could accelerate healing, stabilize failing organs, and even repair damage that ordinary medicine couldn't handle.

The problem was precision.

One mistake could make the medicine useless.

Another could make it dangerous.

Elias had finally found the correct balance.

He called it Lumen Vitae.

The Life Elixir.

It wasn't capable of resurrecting the dead.

It wasn't a miracle.

But for someone whose body was still fighting...

It could make the difference between life and death.

Elias placed the vial inside a small case.

Then a knock came at the door.

Seydric entered.

"There's a problem."

Elias looked up.

"What happened?"

"A merchant caravan arrived from the southern road."

"And?"

"The merchant is asking for you."

Elias frowned.

"Why?"

Seydric hesitated.

"His daughter is dying."

Elias became still.

"How do you know?"

"He brought three physicians with him. None of them can help her."

Elias looked at the vial.

Then back at Seydric.

"Who is the merchant?"

"Lucian Marrow."

Elias's expression changed.

That name meant something.

Lucian Marrow wasn't simply a merchant.

He was one of the wealthiest independent traders in Dregmoore.

His caravans traveled between kingdoms.

His warehouses supplied nobles.

His ships carried rare materials.

His influence reached places armies couldn't.

Elias smiled.

"Bring him to me."

Lucian Marrow looked nothing like a desperate man.

His clothes were expensive.

His posture was confident.

His silver hair was carefully maintained.

But tonight...

That confidence was gone.

He stood beside a bed where his daughter lay unconscious.

Her name was Elena Marrow.

Three physicians stood nearby.

One shook his head.

"We've tried everything."

Lucian's hands tightened.

"There has to be something."

"We've exhausted every treatment we know."

Lucian looked toward the door.

Then Elias entered.

The physicians immediately frowned.

One of them spoke.

"Who is this?"

Elias ignored him.

He walked toward Elena.

Lucian stepped in front of him.

"Who are you?"

"Elias."

"You're the one who created the medicine?"

"Yes."

Lucian stared at the small case in Elias's hand.

"You're telling me that can save my daughter?"

"No."

Lucian's expression hardened.

"Then why are you here?"

Elias opened the case.

"I'm telling you it might."

The room became silent.

One physician scoffed.

"Young man, this is not the time for experiments."

Elias looked at him.

"Then leave."

The physician froze.

Lucian raised his hand.

"Everyone out."

The physicians looked shocked.

"My lord—"

"Out."

They left.

Lucian looked back at Elias.

"If she dies..."

"I know."

Elias opened the vial.

"Which is why I'm not asking you to trust me."

He handed Lucian the medicine.

"I'm asking you to decide."

Lucian stared at the vial.

Then at his daughter.

His hand trembled.

Finally...

He gave it to Elias.

"Save her."

Elias nodded.

"That's the plan."

Hours passed.

Nothing happened.

Lucian remained beside his daughter.

Elias stood near the window.

Then Elena's breathing changed.

Lucian turned.

Her eyes slowly opened.

"Dad?"

Lucian froze.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then he rushed to her side.

"Elena."

She smiled weakly.

"I'm hungry."

Lucian laughed.

It was the first time Elias had heard the man laugh.

The sound quickly turned into something closer to relief.

Lucian turned toward Elias.

"What did you give her?"

"Medicine."

"That isn't an answer."

"It is."

Lucian stared at him.

Then he smiled.

"I don't believe you."

"You don't need to."

The next morning, Lucian and Elias sat across from each other in a private room.

Between them sat a contract.

Lucian studied Elias carefully.

"You saved my daughter."

"Yes."

"You didn't ask for payment."

"Not yet."

Lucian laughed.

"At least you're honest."

Elias leaned back.

"I want to propose a business arrangement."

Lucian's expression became serious.

"What kind?"

"You distribute my medicine."

Lucian raised an eyebrow.

"Your medicine?"

"Among other things."

"What do you want from me?"

"Transportation. Distribution. Access to markets. Information."

Lucian leaned forward.

"And what do I receive?"

"Exclusive access to products nobody else can produce."

Lucian stared at him.

"How many?"

"For now?"

Elias smiled.

"Seven."

Lucian's eyes widened.

"Seven?"

"Medicines."

"All capable of doing what that one did?"

"No."

Elias paused.

"Some will treat injuries. Some illnesses. Some will restore strength."

Lucian slowly looked down at the contract.

"This could change the medical trade."

"I know."

"And you intend to sell them?"

"Eventually."

"Then why come to me?"

Elias smiled.

"Because I don't need another merchant."

Lucian looked up.

"I need someone who understands the board."

Silence.

Lucian studied Elias for a long moment.

Then he placed his hand on the contract.

"There's something I want to know."

"Ask."

"Who are you?"

Elias didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he stood.

He walked toward the window.

"The black banners you've heard about."

Lucian's eyes narrowed.

"Blackridge."

He turned.

"Ironveil."

Lucian's expression changed.

"Eldermere."

Silence.

"The same symbol appeared in all three."

Elias looked directly at him.

"That symbol belongs to me."

Lucian slowly stood.

"You..."

Elias nodded.

"The Veiled Sanctum."

Lucian stared at him.

He finally understood.

The mysterious force spreading through Dregmoore.

The territories that had fallen.

The strange black banners.

The organization nobody could find.

It was all connected to the young man standing before him.

"You conquered those territories."

"Yes."

"You have an army."

"Yes."

"You have a hidden headquarters."

Elias smiled.

"Yes."

Lucian took a slow breath.

"And you're telling me all of this willingly?"

"I don't like unnecessary lies."

Lucian laughed quietly.

"You're either incredibly confident..."

He looked at Elias.

"...or completely insane."

"Perhaps both."

Lucian looked toward his daughter.

Then back at Elias.

"You could have threatened me."

"I could have."

"You could have forced me."

"I could have."

"But you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

Elias walked back to the table.

"Because I don't want servants."

He placed his hand on the contract.

"I want partners."

Lucian stared at him.

Then picked up the pen.

"I think..."

He signed.

"...we have a business."

Elias smiled.

"Yes."

That evening, Lucian left the Sanctum with something more valuable than money.

A contract.

A secret.

And a new understanding of the man behind the black banners.

Elias watched his caravan disappear through the dimensional gate.

Seydric approached.

"Do you trust him?"

"No."

Seydric looked at him.

"Then why let him leave?"

Elias turned toward the Sanctum.

"Trust isn't necessary."

He looked at the warehouses.

The workshops.

The markets.

The growing army.

"Trade is."

Seydric understood.

Until now, the Sanctum had been built through conquest.

But conquest consumed resources.

Armies needed weapons.

Weapons required metal.

Metal required mines.

Mines required workers.

Workers required food.

And all of it required money.

Elias looked toward the distant towers.

"Territories give us land."

He smiled.

"Lucian will give us the world."

Above them, the black banners of the Veiled Sanctum moved with the artificial wind.

The organization had soldiers.

It had territories.

It had a hidden world.

And now...

It had a merchant.

The first thread of an economic empire had been woven.

Elias turned away.

"Begin production."

Seydric nodded.

"As you command."

Elias stopped.

"No."

He looked back.

"As we agreed."

A faint smile appeared.

"Partners."

And somewhere beyond the Sanctum...

Lucian Marrow began wondering whether saving his daughter's life had been the greatest blessing of his life...

Or the moment he had unknowingly stepped into a war that would change Dregmoore forever.
