MHGA Chapter 258 – David's Death Match Hunt

Lucy, at this moment, had no idea her situation had changed.

All she knew was that Kazuma, after suddenly vanishing and reappearing, had unexpectedly agreed to let her go help David.

Meanwhile, inside the room, Kazuma heard Naofumi Iwatani say that he had casually knocked out Maine and the others and placed them in a safe location, and that Naofumi himself was now heading toward the battlefield atop Arasaka Tower.

David, by now, had no attention to spare for the chatter on the Hunters' squad channel—his battle with Adam Smasher had reached its boiling point.

The two of them were practically soaring through the skies above Night City, never touching the ground. David had thrown all his concentration into wielding his Gunlance.

The Dragonfire Gunlance in his left hand was doing double duty, handling both movement and offense, to the point that David felt his wrist was about to snap from the recoil of each shot.

Or perhaps it had already snapped several times, only to be rapidly regenerated by the Demon Series armor's extreme healing capabilities.

The constant destruction and regeneration of his body brought a pain so intense that David could no longer focus on anything else.

Where in Night City's wound district they were fighting, how long this battle had gone on—David no longer knew.

He only knew that unless he forced himself to maintain a pseudo-Sandevistan-like state, Adam Smasher would blast his skull to pieces with either missiles or buckshot.

As their bodies streaked past a rooftop, one of Smasher's rockets grazed a water tower, tearing through its rusted shell like paper. David leveraged the explosion's shockwave to backstep and slide, his Gunlance shield scraping sparks off the concrete. Behind him, a massive holographic ad played an Arasaka cyberware commercial. David landed on a nearby observation platform.

"Go to hell, punk!" Adam Smasher unfurled his back-mounted cyberware—mini-missile pods opened like a swarm of angry wasps, and a hail of micro-missiles shot toward David.

David stared down the incoming swarm. He jammed the smoldering barrel of his Gunlance into the tempered glass below him. An expanding round exploded within the platform's layered glass structure with a muffled blast—and the entire observation deck shattered into a rain of glinting fragments.

"Full Burst!"

David's remaining Wyvern's Fire shells erupted from the Gunlance all at once, triggering a violent explosion that hurled the fragmented glass shards into a storm of shrapnel blasting in all directions.

The ricocheting fragments detonated many of the incoming missiles mid-air, and the resulting chaos sent even more shards flying in erratic trajectories.

Adam Smasher had to shield his cybernetic eyes. During the brief moment he was blinded, David—falling from the collapsing observation platform—jammed another shell into the molten-hot Gunlance mid-air, reloaded via heel pressure, and once again blasted himself skyward using the Gunlance's explosive recoil.

When Smasher batted away the lingering glass and cleared his vision, he looked down for David—only to realize he wasn't falling. His combat instincts kicked in—he looked up.

There David was, face twisted in a grimace, hurtling down from above.

The leather-armored Gunlance hunter had closed the distance. He crashed into Smasher, driving him downward with sheer force. Simultaneously, David slammed the Gunlance point-blank against Smasher's body.

"DIE—"

Before David could finish his roar, Smasher shattered his jaw with a point-blank strike, leaving only a dangling tongue flopping from his ruined upper palate and throat.

The shell's trajectory veered slightly as a result, deflecting some of its force.

Still, the Dragonfire round obliterated Smasher's shoulder armor. The two of them plummeted through the upper levels of a four-story building, smashing through reinforced floors and ceilings before finally crashing to the ground floor.

David's jaw began rapidly regenerating, courtesy of the armor's super-recovery. He tried to drive the Gunlance into Smasher's torso to deliver a Wyrmstake Blast, but Smasher, an experienced veteran, saw through the attack. He flung David aside with sheer force, grabbed his leg with a mechanical arm, and began slamming him repeatedly into the floor.

The immense disorientation nearly drowned David, but he quickly adjusted and tried to counterattack.

Too late.

Smasher hurled David across the room, then tore rebar from the surrounding walls and drove them through David's limbs, pinning him to the wall like a crucifixion.

The difference in experience… David now understood why Adam Smasher was a legend among legends in Night City.

His monstrous cyberware was only part of the story. His terrifying combat instincts were what truly made him a nightmare.

"You're just a rookie who lucked into some fancy toys!" Smasher snarled, pressing David to the wall. With his other hand, he deployed a thermal blade, aiming it at David's head.

"If you didn't have these freak tools, you wouldn't even be worthy to stand before me!"

"Heh… hahaha…"

David laughed even as blood gurgled in his throat.

Smasher paused for a second, adjusting the angle of the thermal blade to aim directly at David's brain.

David spoke:

"This power may have come to me suddenly… but so what? As long as I can shatter this cursed fate—change this cursed Night City—I don't care how I got it!"

"I'll claw my way out of hell and finish you myself, Adam Smasher!"

Smasher no longer hesitated. The thermal blade descended toward David's head—

And then, a chain wrapped tightly around Smasher's neck.

With a roar of an engine, Smasher was yanked backward violently.

"David!!"
