MHGA Chapter 259: Smasher's Dead End
David had already braced himself to cart and make a comeback—but then, out of nowhere, he saw Lucy appear.
Somehow, she had gotten here. And now she was yanking back Adam Smasher with a motorcycle and a chain, stopping him right before he could finish David off.
"!"
Smasher was yanked backward but quickly regained his footing. He turned to see who had pulled him back.
"You again."
The weapons mounted on Smasher's shoulder swiveled toward the revving motorcycle and opened fire.
Lucy had just enough time to leap off the bike before it exploded under the barrage of micro-missiles. The blast flung her across the street.
She landed in a roll and immediately dove behind the remnants of a collapsed wall, dodging the incoming fire.
Seeing Lucy here now, intervening and buying him time, David felt a surge of adrenaline and rage. He struggled with renewed fury against the rebar skewering him.
The rods tore through his muscles, grinding against bone and making a sickening sound—but even so, David used that burst of energy to rip himself free of the wall.
With pieces of rebar still stuck in him, he crashed into Adam Smasher, knocking the cyborg's massive frame off-balance.
David scrambled to recover his Gunlance and shield from the ground and sprinted toward Lucy's direction, blocking Smasher's rocket barrage with the shield.
The monster-forged shield stood like a fortress against the assault, buying David a brief moment behind it to speak.
"Lucy, you…" David stared at her—bruised, scorched, and utterly defiant—and didn't know what to say.
Should he scold her for coming here? Ask if she was alright? Beg her to run?
"You can't keep doing this alone," Lucy said quickly. "You're going to get yourself killed!"
"I'm fine! I can still fight! I told you—I'll make this city a place where—" David tried to argue, but Lucy's hand had already touched his face.
He could feel the gap where her monowire had severed part of her fingers. The warmth of her palm made his mind stop.
"That's not what I want now," Lucy said, her hand cupping his cheek. "I don't want you to fall with this city. If you're going anywhere… take me with you."
Amidst the sound of gunfire, Smasher's voice sliced through.
"You two mutts licking each other's wounds? Disgusting. Don't worry—I'll make sure not even the collars are left behind." His mechanical voice sneered with disdain. "Love? Let's see if you can still hug when you're both meat paste."
As David listened to Smasher's taunts and felt Lucy's touch, something snapped into focus.
This fight was never about dying with Adam Smasher.
He was supposed to survive. To stand with Lucy, with his mom, with everyone else… in a better world. Not just drown in the chaos of Night City.
"Lucy… can you find Doc's clinic? The cyberware shop?" David asked in a hushed tone.
He was disoriented—his internal compass was shot.
"I… I can. Why?" Lucy blinked.
"Because I just figured out how to kill that tin bastard." David gritted his teeth. "Hold on tight! We're getting out of here!"
David crouched behind the shield, biting down as he loaded a flash round into his left-hand launcher. Without hesitation, he fired it at Smasher.
Smasher, expecting another direct attack, was caught off guard—the flash exploded right in his face.
By the time he processed what happened, David had already grabbed Lucy and launched into a Blast Dash escape.
"You scrap-pile runts think you can outrun missile lock?! YOU THINK YOU CAN ESCAPE?!" Smasher howled, taking flight and unleashing another storm of firepower.
Lucy clung tightly to David's waist as she strained to navigate through the storm, shouting out directions above the roaring wind.
Luckily, Doc's clinic wasn't far. If they pushed hard, they could make it.
Smasher was still hot on their tail, firing away, but David could now see the familiar signs of the clinic in Santo Domingo, Rancho Coronado.
"Two hundred meters straight ahead!" Lucy cried.
David looked around at the panicked civilians fleeing in every direction. He knew—this was his only chance.
If he failed here, he wouldn't just die.
He'd kill a lot of people with him.
"ADAM SMASHER! YOU ARAKAS BITCH LAPDOG! YOU'RE NOT EVEN ON MORGAN BLACKHAND'S LEVEL! COME ON THEN!!!" David roared as he barreled toward the clinic.
He shielded Lucy with his body and dove headfirst through the cyberdoc's skylight.
"Shit…"
Smasher, seething with fury, dove in after him.
When David and Lucy crashed into the clinic, he was just about to shout for Doc to run—but Doc wasn't in sight.
He wasn't here watching braindances like usual.
No time to worry. David rushed through the wrecked interior, found what he was looking for, and turned back.
"Lucy… hide."
David looked her in the eye and said with iron conviction: "Trust me."
"I'll go with you. To the moon… wherever. Doesn't matter. As long as we're together."
With his final plan in hand, David stood protectively in front of Lucy, ready to meet Smasher's descent.
Smasher crashed in like a meteor, and the first thing he saw was David charging straight at him—unguarded, reckless, a berserk beast.
Both combatants activated Sandevistan—Smasher fully, David nearly there.
Smasher found it almost laughable. David looked pathetic. He could kill him ten different ways right now.
But then… David suddenly dropped his Gunlance, kicked off the ground to rocket forward—and slammed his right fist into Smasher's face.
In that fist was a green vial.
The contents splashed all over Smasher's armor.
"GET THE HELL OUT OF THAT METAL COFFIN!!!"
