Chapter 8 - That's Odd

The sun was bright, the air warm, and the park was filled with the laughter of children. Pidgey flew overhead while a few Sentret played tag near the trees.

Ethan sat on a park bench, hands in his hair, while Whitney rolled on the grass laughing so hard she was nearly in tears.

Kitsu, meanwhile, was retelling the "epic tale" with wild hand gestures, and Ember the Flareon acted out every scene like a professional stage performer.

"So then," Kitsu said dramatically, "my brother goes all serious — like 'Flareon, can you understand me?' — and then Ember just—"

"PFFFFT!" Whitney finished, mimicking the smoke puff sound and bursting into giggles again. "She just—she just roasted him!"

Ethan groaned, covering his face. "Why do I even come to the park anymore…"

Ember smirked proudly beside Kitsu, her tail flicking smugly as if confirming every word.

Whitney's mom chuckled softly from her picnic blanket, watching the three kids with a fond smile. "You three really get along well, huh?"

"Yeah," Whitney said between laughs, "Ethan's like the straight man in one of those comedy duos!"

Ethan sighed. "I'm surrounded by traitors."

Kitsu patted his shoulder innocently. "You're just mad that you can't speak 'Flareon-ese.'"

Ethan gave her a flat look. "It's not even a real language."

Whitney giggled again, her bright pink hair bouncing as she leaned closer. "You know, Ethan, if you could talk to Pokémon, you'd be super popular! Maybe even a Gym Leader one day!"

Ethan blinked. "Gym Leader… me?" He looked away, thinking. "I mean, that sounds… kinda nice, actually."

For a moment, his thoughts drifted — back to the aura, to that pulsing energy he'd felt the night before. A strange warmth spread through his chest again, faint but there. Almost like the park air itself was breathing with him.

Kitsu tilted her head. "Hey, bro, you're spacing out again."

"Huh? Oh, sorry." Ethan smiled weakly. "Just… thinking about something."

Whitney leaned forward, curiosity in her eyes. "Thinking about what?"

Ethan quickly waved his hands. "Nothing important! Definitely not mysterious dragon powers or glowing purple stuff!"

Both girls blinked.

"…What?" Kitsu asked.

"…Nothing!" Ethan said quickly, forcing a laugh. "Absolutely nothing!"

Whitney's mom looked over, a little confused. "Everything okay over there?"

"Yup!" Kitsu and Whitney said in unison, while Ethan muttered under his breath, "Not even a little…"

Ethan felt something in his chest, the slyther again, but this time, it felt odd. He looked nearby, and he saw a bush in the park moving.

Kitsu looked at her brother, as she spoke. "Ethan, are you ok".

Ethan moved as he felt a cry, a weak cry, he moved the bush and saw it.

A green, winged Pokèmon, with bat-like ears, and a big droopy mouth, one of its wings seemed hurt

[Insterd image of Shiny Noibat]

Ethan, seeing the bat Pokèmon, just called out for Whitney's mom. "Miss Akane (Whitney family name for people wondering), I think found a Pokèmon".

Whitney's mom turned at the call, eyes widening as she jogged over. "A Pokémon? Here in the park?"

Kitsu leaned over Ethan's shoulder, blinking in surprise. "Whoa… that's not from Johto, is it?"

Whitney gasped, hands on her cheeks. "It's so cute! But—oh no, its wing looks hurt!"

The little shiny Noibat let out a faint whimper, trembling as it tried to fold its wing tighter. Ethan slowly crouched down, his hand hovering just above it.

"It's okay," he said softly. "I'm not gonna hurt you."

The bat Pokémon blinked, its golden eyes focusing on him. For a brief moment, a faint purple shimmer glowed around Ethan's hand — invisible to the others, but Noibat's pupils widened as if it felt something.

Whitney's mom crouched beside him, taking a careful look. "Poor thing… maybe it got separated from its flock. They don't usually come this far west."

Ethan swallowed, still feeling that strange pulse in his chest — stronger now, almost responding to the Noibat's weak heartbeat.

He turned to Whitney's mom. "Can we… take it somewhere safe? Like a Pokémon Center?"

Akane smiled gently. "Of course, dear. We'll take it to the one near the north gate."

As she picked up the little Noibat carefully, the bat's eyes stayed locked on Ethan, letting out a soft, almost questioning chirp — like it already recognized him.

Kitsu noticed the look and grinned teasingly. "Awww, looks like it likes you, bro~"

Ethan rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "Yeah, or maybe it's just hungry…"

But deep down, he could feel it — that same slythering, pulsing warmth inside him whispering again.

Almost like… the dragon was calling to one of its own.

The automatic doors of the Goldenrod City Pokémon Center slid open with a soft hiss, letting in the faint scent of antiseptic and berry balm. The air inside was cool, the faint hum of healing machines mixing with the gentle coos and chirps of recovering Pokémon.

Behind the counter stood Nurse Joy — a woman in her late twenties, wearing the classic pink uniform with her hair tied neatly in a rounded bun beneath her white nurse's cap marked with a red cross. Her warm, soft eyes instantly turned alert when she saw the group walk in — especially the trembling, green Noibat in Akane's arms.

"Oh dear…" she said, rushing forward with a tray in hand. "That Pokémon— it's hurt! Please, bring it here quickly."

Akane set the little Noibat gently on the counter. The bat Pokémon gave a weak chirp, its wing twitching slightly. Joy's gloved hands moved with practiced care, examining it.

Ethan stood nearby, watching nervously. "Will it be okay?"

Nurse Joy glanced up, giving him a reassuring smile — though her brow furrowed slightly. "It's not too bad. Just a sprain in its wing, a few scratches. But…"

She leaned in, her voice dropping a little as she inspected the creature more closely. "A Noibat… here in Johto? That's very unusual."

Whitney tilted her head. "Huh? Why's that?"

Joy adjusted her glasses. "They're native to Kalos — thousands of miles away. Wild ones don't just appear here without a reason. And this one… it doesn't have a Trainer ID tag or a Poké Ball signal."

That made Akane blink. "You mean— it's a wild foreign Pokémon?"

Joy nodded slowly, clearly unsettled. "Yes. I think I'd better call someone."

She reached over to the desk terminal and pressed a button. A moment later, a calm but firm voice came through the comm.

"Officer Jenny, Goldenrod North Division. Nurse Joy, what's the situation?"

Joy kept her voice steady. "We have a young Noibat, seemingly wild, found injured in the city park. No Trainer registration, and it's not native to Johto. I think you should see this."

"Understood. I'll be there shortly."

Ethan shifted, feeling that odd pull in his chest again — like the Noibat's faint aura was reaching out to him.

The little bat's ears twitched. Despite its wounds, it opened its eyes and looked straight at Ethan again, letting out a soft coo that only he could truly understand.

Kitsu leaned over to whisper to Whitney. "Okay, either my brother has a secret Dratini aura or that bat really likes him."

Whitney stifled a giggle while Ethan groaned. "Not helping, Kitsu…"

Just then, the sound of boots echoed from the entrance. The doors slid open again — and a tall woman with blue hair in a police cap stepped inside, her hand resting near her Poké Ball belt.

Officer Jenny had arrived

Jenny walked closer to the counter, her boots clicking against the clean tiles. Her eyes sharpened the way a seasoned officer's did when something didn't add up. "Where's the Pokémon?"

Nurse Joy nodded toward the examination tray. "Right here, Jenny. It's calm, but the situation's… unusual."

Jenny reached out, gently lifting the small Noibat into her arms. For a moment, the bat Pokémon didn't move—then its ears twitched sharply.

The air seemed to thicken.

Without warning, the Noibat gave a startled chirp and burst from Jenny's hands in a flutter of green and purple wings. Despite its injured wing, it glided weakly across the room, landing right on Ethan's shoulder.

"Wha—?" Ethan blinked, frozen as the Noibat clung to him. Its tiny claws gripped the fabric of his shirt while it nuzzled under his chin, trembling but clearly more at ease.

Jenny's brows knit in surprise. "That's… odd. Wild Pokémon don't usually react like that."

Kitsu puffed her cheeks, trying not to laugh. "Guess she just likes my brother more."

Ethan looked at her with a deadpan stare. "Kitsu…"

Joy covered her mouth in surprise, watching the Noibat's small chest rise and fall, calmer than before. "It's almost like it recognizes him."

Jenny folded her arms, her gaze moving between Ethan and the bat Pokémon. "Recognizes him? Has he owned a Noibat before?"

Akane shook her head. "No, Officer. Ethan doesn't even have his Trainer license yet."

That made Jenny pause, tapping a finger on her chin. "Then this doesn't make much sense. A foreign species showing up wild in Johto, no Poké Ball signal, and it imprints itself on a child it's never met…"

Ethan could feel it again — that faint pulsing in his chest. The same sensation as when he tried meditating days ago. His heartbeat matched the rhythm of Noibat's soft breathing, their auras overlapping for a split second.

Jenny's eyes narrowed slightly. "Kid… did you do something to it before bringing it here?"

Ethan shook his head quickly. "N-no! I just found it in the park! I swear!"

Noibat squeaked loudly, as if defending him, flapping its uninjured wing with surprising spirit.

Joy blinked at the display. "Well… that settles that question."

Jenny sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose. "Alright. I'll report this to the Goldenrod Wildlife Bureau — but until we know where it came from, it's better if it stays under observation here."

Ethan looked at Noibat, who squeaked sadly and refused to let go of his shoulder.

Jenny gave a small, half-smile. "Or… maybe with the kid, if it keeps panicking like that. But only until we get some answers."

Ethan perked up slightly, trying not to look too excited. "R-really?"

Jenny crossed her arms again, giving him a mock stern look. "Only under supervision. This isn't an adoption, kid. It's temporary custody."

"Right! Temporary…" Ethan said, though inside his mind he was already screaming with joy.

Kitsu leaned toward Whitney, whispering with a mischievous grin. "Temporary, he says. Bet she's never leaving."

Whitney giggled, nodding. "Yeah, looks like big brother just got his first Pokémon."

Jenny pinched the bridge of her nose and exhaled before speaking. "Alright, kid, before I file anything, what's your name?"

Ethan hesitated a bit under her sharp gaze. "Uh… Ethan. Ethan Harmonia."

There was a pause.

Jenny blinked once. Then groaned, dragging a hand down her face. "Of course you're a Harmonia. Why am I not surprised?"

Kitsu tilted her head. "Wait, what's that supposed to mean?"

Jenny shot her a look of tired amusement. "It means your family has a talent for being right in the middle of every odd Pokémon incident in Johto. Legendary sighting? Harmonia. Strange elemental hybrid? Harmonia. Wild dragon in a city park? Guess who?"

Ethan sweatdropped. "That's… uh… coincidence?"

Jenny gave him a flat look that could've melted steel. "Kid, your grandpa once called in a Dragonite patrol to chase off a rogue Gyarados because, quote, 'it looked at him funny.' Coincidence left this family a long time ago."

Nurse Joy had to bite back a laugh, covering her mouth with one hand. "She's not wrong."

Kitsu giggled behind her hands. "Grandpa really did that?"

Ethan sighed. "Yeah… and he bragged about it for a week."

Jenny finally chuckled, shaking her head as she wrote something on her notepad. "Well, that explains the Noibat's behavior, at least. The Harmonia name tends to attract… unique cases."

She looked back at Ethan, her tone softening just a little. "Alright, Ethan Harmonia. Until we figure out where that Noibat came from, you're responsible for it. Don't let it out of your sight, and don't do anything crazy."

Ethan nodded eagerly. "Got it!"

Jenny smirked slightly. "And by crazy, I mean Harmonia-level crazy."

"...No promises," Ethan muttered under his breath, earning a small laugh from Kitsu and Whitney.
