Chapter 47 - A Sun in the Wrong Place

Chatper- A Sun in the Wrong Place

Veydras looked up before anyone warned him not to.

A black center was forming above the Theater.

Crimson light gathered around it, bright enough to expose every broken piece of armor, every upturned face, every hand searching for someone among the wounded.

Then the light did something worse.

It removed the certainty that darkness had ever been present.

This star burned the gods eyes, forcing them to look away or to be blinded.

Shadows remained visible beneath bodies and weapons. Veydras could see them. He could no longer make that evidence agree with what the corona was insisting about the world.

Pain entered both eyes.

He kept looking.

Noctis caught the movement of blood down his cheek.

"Veydras. Your eyes."

"I'm using them."

"Then find something useful before you lose them."

The black center expanded.

The war beneath it became a field of intended destinations.

Caelia raised both hands.

"Pending."

The star's contraction hesitated.

Only the contraction. Its formation had stages, and she had caught one before it could finish becoming the next. Whatever happened when those stages were complete would not offer her the same interval.

"I cannot hold this," she said.

Noctis turned toward the surviving gods.

"Then we use what you can."

Orders crossed the Theater. Spatial specialists isolated the region around the star. Binary structures assembled beneath it, not as a wall anyone trusted to survive the final attack, but as measured points through which the others could coordinate. Logical and Causal authorities tested the connection between the gathering energy and the battlefield it meant to consume.

Every answer led back to the same problem.

The star was being prepared to remove the things their defenses required in order to defend anything.

Noctis began calculating.

The pressure imposed on the Theater had a cost. The maintained compression had a cost. The energy keeping Null contained within Chaos was doing work.

There was plenty to charge.

He followed the expenditure to its source.

Gold reached the boundary of Bellum Ultimum and stopped.

LIABILITY IDENTIFIED.

COLLECTION ROUTE CLOSED.

Karma was inside a private contest that barred Noctis's intervention. The wound he had carried into it remained a wound. A new Collection was another matter.

Noctis's jaw tightened.

"The debt is real. I cannot make the debtor settle it from here."

"Take it from the weapon," Veydras said.

"I am."

Noctis changed the recipient of the payment.

"Recompense."

A band of crimson vanished from the star.

Gold flared across his arms as he converted the seized energy into compensation for the strain already imposed on the surrounding field.

For an instant, the pressure eased.

Caelia drew a breath through clenched teeth.

Noctis took another band.

Then another.

The theft was real. So was the narrowing interval in which he had to finish it. He was removing energy from an attack already charged with enough to complete itself; collecting a portion did not oblige the remainder to wait politely for confiscation.

The black center contracted again.

A line of blood reached Noctis's collar.

"Not enough," he said.

He was looking at the star, not at an instrument pretending to measure infinity.

The energy Karma had committed was immense beside the defenders' available answers. Beside the Red Continuum and the concentrated reserve of the Black Continuum, it was a minor expenditure. Neither source had been meaningfully tested.

That did not make the expenditure zero.

It made the amount Noctis needed to remove, in the time he had left, appalling.

Inside Bellum Ultimum, Eris could feel the defenders working against the star.

She could not reach it as they could.

She could reach Karma.

He tried to widen the supply through the gateway in his chest. Eris drove her shoulder into him and forced him to spend that correction on keeping his damaged body upright instead.

His halo selected a line to drive her back.

She moved before it resolved and sent a brief pulse into the opening, releasing the gold before he could turn Null against its connection to her.

Karma changed the route. Her pulse missed. His bare heel caught the side of her knee, and she staggered without giving him the distance he needed.

The star already possessed enough energy to complete itself. She could not unmake what he had sent.

She could make him fight for the chance to send anything more.

Outside, Ilyon stepped beside his sister.

"Can you give me a destination?"

Caelia's hands shook.

"I can give you now."

"Noctis," Ilyon said. "The attachment."

The Lord of Recompense understood.

He gathered the unspent entries accumulated since his first Collection—the corrections, the wasted attacks, the costs of keeping their people alive through the war—and converted them.

The gold ceased to resemble numbers.

It became an edge.

Noctis did not aim at the star's mass. His severance had already proved that size alone was no protection against it.

He aimed between the Black Sun and its designated battlefield.

"Collection."

The line opened across the sky.

For one moment, the Theater stopped being the star's destination.

Thessa raised her hands.

The fracture Noctis had made spread through the adjacent targeting relationships. One after another, routes by which the attack meant to resolve upon them separated.

Ilyon felt the anchor loosen.

Then another attachment formed.

Noctis stared at it.

His cut had not healed. The first link remained severed.

Its loss had become an event.

Chaos used that event to produce the next link.

Thessa extended the fracture. Noctis cut the replacement.

A third grew from the success of the second cut.

The star was not undoing their victories. It was continuing from them.

"Something is making the links," Veydras said.

Noctis's next severance opened a white division through the crimson glare.

"Yes."

Veydras uncovered his hand.

"Then stop cutting long enough for me to touch that."

Ilyon misaligned the separation between his reaching fingers and the star's outer configuration. A Spatial god held the route steady while Caelia kept the contraction from completing.

Veydras did not put his hand into the black center.

He reached the relationship arranging the whole event around it.

Blood ran freely from his eyes now. He refused to blink away the structure he had spent the interval finding.

"Overclocked."

His fingers began losing the stability of their edges.

"Ontological Destabilization: Fault Absolute."

The Black Sun faltered.

Its corona broke into mismatched segments. The agreement holding its pressure, containment, targeting, and future collapse inside one continuing attack started coming apart under his touch.

For the first time, the star did not look inevitable.

Veydras pushed harder.

The black center contracted violently.

Caelia cried out.

"Stop!"

He saw the problem before she finished the word.

The star had never been intended to remain a star.

An intact containment could release its Null. A broken containment could release its Null. A star losing the agreement that made it a stable object could still become the event Karma had prepared it to produce.

Chaos kept those continuations available as Veydras destabilized them.

He reached past the collapsing vessel and attacked the agreement between those possible endings.

That began to fail too.

But not quickly enough.

The containment was coming apart faster than he could remove every destructive continuation waiting behind its failure. He had not found something immune to destabilization. He had found something designed to make a catastrophe of ceasing to hold together.

Caelia was holding the transition open with both hands and blood on her teeth.

If he pushed through another layer before he finished the deeper work, she would lose it.

Veydras withdrew.

His hand shook so badly that he folded it against his chest to keep it away from the people beside him.

Noctis did not ask whether he could try harder.

He had watched him try.

"Ilyon," Noctis said.

"I know."

Noctis severed the latest attachment. Thessa propagated it. Caelia held the interval before the severed connection could produce its successor.

This time Ilyon used the opening.

He misaligned the star's intended position with the position it actually occupied.

The difference widened.

Universes passed between them and its center.

Then thousands.

Ilyon's knees struck the ground. He did not lower his hands. His awareness followed the displaced mass through boundaries and nested distances that would have made most divine relocations look local.

The Black Sun disappeared from the sky.

Above the Theater there was only the injury its presence had left in everyone's sight.

For half a breath, someone began to cheer.

Noctis looked at the new targeting entries.

"Don't."

Ilyon stared upward, breathing through his open mouth.

"I moved it."

"I know."

"The whole star."

"I know."

"Thousands of universes."

Noctis crouched beside him and turned the calculation where he could see it.

The origin had changed.

The victims had not.

Another continuation had found the war again. The Black Sun did not need to spend an ordinary journey crossing the separation Ilyon had made. The intervening space could be included in the deletion.

It had not detonated yet.

All those distances were becoming part of what the detonation would remove.

Ilyon tried again.

His sister caught his shoulder—not to restrain him, but to keep him upright while he forced the origin farther from its intended destination.

The number of intervening universes increased.

The classification of their refuge did not change.

They were still inside the Aetherial Interstice.

So was the attack.

Veydras looked at Noctis's calculations and understood why the threat no longer ended at the people assembled here. The event was reaching through the relationships between the structures containing them.

Their battlefield was no longer the largest thing in danger.

Caelia shifted sideways to avoid someone.

Noctis glanced toward the empty space beside her.

Then forgot why he had looked.

Far away, the Black Sun entered its last contraction.

Its outer radiance folded inward. The gathering supernova drew its crimson edges toward a center that was becoming too absolute for their remaining distinctions to hold.

Caelia tried to catch one more interval.

Her fingers closed on nothing useful.

A voice beside Noctis said, "You have been looking at that rather intently."

He turned.

A man held an apple in one hand.

Noctis knew him.

The knowledge was immediate, settled, and repulsive in its ease; like it had always been there. He remembered the man standing beside this stretch of battlefield for years.

The battlefield had not been arranged like this for years.

Noctis could still see the gold record of his own movement through that supposedly occupied space moments earlier.

His memory found the objection unimportant.

"Lethica," he said.

The name arrived as naturally as a correction to familiar paperwork.

Veydras looked at the man.

He remembered disliking him for a very long time.

He also remembered that there had been no one there when he uncovered his hand.

Neither memory weakened.

Lethica turned the apple slightly, inspecting a small mark on its skin. The gesture had none of Karma's invitation to admire him. He seemed only to be waiting for the others to stop misunderstanding their surroundings.

"The star," Noctis said.

"Yes."

"It is still going to detonate."

"Of course."

Ilyon tried to stand.

Lethica glanced at him.

"You may stop doing that."

Ilyon's hands lowered before he decided whether he trusted the suggestion. The strain remained. His sister still had to support him.

"Where is it?" Veydras asked.

"Outside the Aetherial Interstice."

Noctis looked down at the calculation he had been holding.

"That isn't where he put it."

Lethica's expression carried a mild concern, as though Noctis had misplaced an obvious fact.

"It has never been inside."

The statement settled.

No gate opened. Nothing accelerated past them. No shield grew between the Theater and its death.

The entire event acquired a different place in the world's accepted history.

Its formation. Its contraction. The catastrophe it was about to complete.

All of it belonged far outside the Aetherial Interstice, beyond the structures its completion would otherwise have threatened.

Not simply a new origin from which the same attack could still reach them.

A different placement of the whole event, including the region in which its destruction would resolve.

Veydras could feel his mind arranging an explanation for how they had seen it. How their attacks had reached it. How their genuine interventions and its impossible distance had always been compatible.

He hated how little effort the explanation required.

"You were watching it," Lethica said. "That is not the same as being beneath it."

Blood dripped from Veydras's chin.

The pain in his eyes was real. The gods' wounds were real. Nothing in the new account bothered to make their earlier suffering less costly.

Beyond every Archaverse held within the Interstice, far from the greater structure the star had threatened, the Black Sun finished collapsing.

Its crimson corona fell into the black center.

Then the supernova completed itself.

At the heart of the event, there was no traveling front to outrun. The selected region disappeared as a completed result. Farther through the event's outer extent, concentrated destruction dispersed into slower spreading absence.

The Theater received none of it.

No edge of the final attack. No escaping fragment. No last measure of force slipping through a defense.

The gods waited for a blow that belonged nowhere near them.

Silence followed.

Caelia's knees gave way. Ilyon caught her badly, and both remained kneeling.

Noctis looked from the empty sky to the man with the apple.

"Why did you save us?"

"And how where you strong enough to do so."

Lethica considered the question.

His gaze passed over the exhausted armies without stopping on any particular face.

"That would threaten the larger Continuum; the mother would be mad. And I had the ability to stop it because I am one of the entities within the immutable circle: I am Lethica, the god of lies, creator of reality. "

Noctis had wanted to hear that someone had come for them.

He understood the distinction.

"Whose authority and command?" he asked.

"The Mothers"

Noctis questioned," Who is the father?"

Lethica laughed," Divorced."

Lethica returned his attention to the apple.

Around him, the battlefield found no reason to object.

Inside Bellum Ultimum, Eris felt the people in her war keep breathing.

She moved.
