Chapter-The Last Casualty
The sphere contracted.
Karma remained beneath the white sky with his hand raised, waiting for the domain to finish deciding what had happened.
There should have been a second combatant.
There was no longer a person to whom that absence could be assigned.
No soul had escaped the horizon. Nothing conscious waited beyond its edge. Even the distinction by which Eris Mallicia could have been recognized had been removed.
The scars cut by Karma's own attacks remained in the plain.
So did the war beyond it.
Outside Bellum Ultimum, a Syndicate formation held the position into which it had been ordered. Wounded soldiers continued breathing because a fist had been stopped before it reached them. Noctis's calculations still contained the consequences of an intervention whose author he could no longer identify.
There was no hidden name among those facts. No miniature goddess preserved inside a soldier's memory.
There were people alive in positions they would not otherwise have occupied, unfinished exchanges, and consequences already belonging to them rather than to the person who had caused them.
The larger war retained those things.
It retained its own law as well.
Its god was to be the last casualty.
The war still had living participants outside the private contest. It had not concluded. The absence inside Bellum Ultimum therefore could not be accepted as its final account.
War did not discover a surviving piece of Eris.
It reconstructed the person its unfinished history required.
The meaning returned first: the distinction that made one person Eris Mallicia and no one else.
Then the person.
Her boot struck the plain.
Her fractured forearm dropped an inch before she caught it against her body. The movement dragged a sound through her teeth. Blood was already in her mouth; the torn armor over her ribs did not acquire a single missing piece.
She returned with the breath she had been failing to finish.
Karma lowered his hand.
For a moment he only looked at her.
Eris remembered crossing her arms.
Then this.
No darkness between. No waiting. There had been no one left to experience either.
"That worked," Karma said.
Eris spat blood onto the ground.
"Yes."
His gaze moved over her swollen eye, the arm held too closely against her side, the way one knee carried more weight than the other.
"And you haven't improved."
Eris adjusted her stance.
"I didn't get a rest."
He fired.
She was moving before the aperture opened.
The line removed a strip of ground beside her. She stepped across the thinner end of an older scar and approached from his missing side.
Karma deleted the separation between them.
Eris met his arrival with her shoulder against the part of his chest that remained. His Null-covered hand passed behind her head. She struck beneath the brace supporting his arm and forced him to turn to keep the coating from touching his own damaged torso.
The turn gave her room to leave.
Karma did not pursue immediately.
He looked past her—not toward a place on the plain, but toward the relation holding this small encounter inside the larger conflict.
"You kept the Theater."
Eris said nothing.
"No outside intervention," he continued. "But the war itself never stopped."
"It's the same war."
"And they are still in it."
Eris felt the change in his attention.
The people beyond the domain were not additional opponents for him to enjoy. They were becoming a condition to remove.
She attacked before he could work with the thought.
Karma's fist came toward her face. She turned outside the black knuckles, struck his upper arm, and saw the crimson control around the sphere tighten in response.
Again.
Each time he selected a destination, a connection opened between the reservoir's containment and the Chaos directing it. It remained active while he held the firing arrangement steady. His body, his energy, and the weapon were separate things, but that operation joined them.
She had watched it through enough exchanges now to recognize the join.
COUNTERDOCTRINE DEVELOPING.
Karma moved the sphere behind his shoulder.
The concealment did not help. Battle Omniscience had never required her to see an archer's fingers with her ordinary eyes.
Eris gave him a target.
She let her weight settle as though pain had finally broken her balance.
His intention fixed on her center.
She moved before the deletion resolved and sent a narrow gold pulse of her own War toward the red opening it left exposed.
Her attack traveled.
It crossed the gap, entered the active Chaos connection, and drove backward through the operation Karma was still sustaining.
The pulse did not touch the Null.
It struck the control holding the firing arrangement together.
Karma's halo jerked. The red brace at his elbow lost tension as he corrected the intrusion, and his hand dropped.
Eris's boot hit his chest.
He crossed the plain on his back.
She followed, keeping the gold alive between her fingers and his weapon so the doctrine could correct its aim as the connection changed.
Karma saw the thread.
His expression became intent.
"You didn't send it back."
"No."
Eris drove another pulse into the same exposed operation.
"I sent mine."
COUNTERDOCTRINE ESTABLISHED: RETURN FIRE.
War had learned a route into the weapon, not mastery of its contents. Return Fire required him to expose that route by operating it. It required her to identify the true connection among the contradictions protecting it.
And keeping the pulse aligned required a live extension of the doctrine itself.
Karma opened the containment inward.
Blackness touched the place toward which her gold was reaching.
Battle Omniscience interrupted her attack with a warning so immediate that she felt it in the hand sustaining the thread.
DISENGAGE.
For an instant she saw the consequence.
The pulse would disappear first. The active targeting thread would follow. Null would then have a continuous target back to the learned response holding that thread in existence.
Not merely her current shot.
The doctrine.
Eris cut the connection.
Gold vanished at the mouth of the reservoir.
The knowledge remained hers.
Karma's fist arrived where her head would have been if she had spent another instant trying to save the attack.
She ducked before his arrival, letting the black knuckles pass over her hair, and drove her good elbow beneath his jaw.
His teeth struck together.
He answered with a bare kick to the side of her knee.
Eris stumbled. The fracture in her forearm moved as she caught herself against her own ribs.
Pain did not make the lesson less useful.
She could reach his control.
She could not stay connected to it when he let Null answer.
The next return would have to be brief, committed, and released before he could turn the route against her. It would lose the certainty of continuous correction.
It would have to be aimed.
Karma stood, the damaged leg dragging for half a step before his own Chaos took more of its weight.
He looked at the small red sphere as it settled into his halo.
Then at the marks cut into the ground.
Eris did not give him time to arrange another horizon.
She advanced through his next attempt to choose a line, forcing his hand outward before the selection completed. The shot cut the white sky instead. Its downward continuation joined two scars near the edge of the plain.
Karma turned the missed shot into a second attack.
Eris had already moved toward the source rather than its next target.
Her palm struck his face.
His head snapped sideways. The second firing arrangement broke apart in red static.
Karma caught her wrist with the fingers of his ruined hand.
The black coating began to form.
She broke the grip before it closed, driving her thumb against his damaged thumb and taking the pressure off the joint rather than trying to overpower his entire hand.
They separated.
For the first time since her return, Karma let the distance remain.
The Red Continuum opened inside his wound.
Eris felt the pull beyond Bellum Ultimum.
She looked sharply at him.
"You can't bring them in."
"I'm not bringing anyone in."
A red current passed into the relation the private domain had retained with the Theater.
The same continuing war through which Eris had been reconstructed.
Her expression changed.
He had not breached a wall. He had found the connection she had deliberately kept.
"They are why the war can supply you again," Karma said. "The living conflict outside the scope of the deletion."
Eris struck at the current.
A Null line selected her reaching arm.
She withdrew before it resolved, leaving the shot to cut another narrow absence behind her. Karma used the interruption to send a measure of blackness after the red.
The white sky overhead remained white.
Beyond it, something began to gather.
"Remove the Theater's surviving participants," Karma continued, "and there is no independent living war outside this room to reconstruct what I erase inside it."
She understood why killing him and why stopping the thing he was making were not yet the same task.
The current was already becoming an attack of its own.
"Black Sun," Karma said.
Eris's awareness reached the Theater.
Found the gathering star.
Found the people beneath it.
"What stops it?"
Karma met her eye.
"Nothing within the Aetherial Interstice."
