Chapter 48 - Before Chaos Had a Name

Chapter-Before Chaos Had a Name

Eris struck the control connection again.

The Black Continuum sealed inside its crimson containment.

The pattern did not stop.

The sphere had made the absences. It was no longer sustaining them.

Eris understood the distinction immediately and turned her remaining force toward the relationships joining the scars.

Karma could barely fight anymore.

Eris smirked, you don't have anything else under your sleeve. Give up, I win.

Karma laughed then spoke while she changed targets.

"Advanced Technique."

Her grip tightened beneath his jaw.

"Before the Name."

The meaning of the pattern changed.

No outward attack followed the words. Eris's awareness found something being offered inward, where the hand holding his throat could neither reach nor close it.

His life.

She loosened her grip before her own restraint could help complete the payment.

Karma's heart stopped anyway.

The weight in her hand became different.

Not weaker.

Unoccupied.

Far from the Theater, Kaosu stopped in the middle of a step.

Something he had never needed to search for was missing.

His father's physical presence had gone silent.

Kaosu reached for it before he decided whether he wanted to. The instinct made him angry. Then the anger frightened him, because it had arrived to cover something he did not know what to do with.

Gods returned.

His father returned.

He held on to that thought.

Inside Bellum Ultimum, the first condition completed.

PRICE: PHYSICAL DEATH OF KARMA.

PAID.

Eris felt the second offering begin.

She could have stopped a hand, interrupted a breath, broken a concentration directed outward through a weapon. She had done all three until the man in front of her could no longer defeat her.

She could not make him retain the soul he was relinquishing.

It followed his body into death.

PRICE: SPIRITUAL DEATH OF KARMA.

PAID.

Kaosu felt the second silence.

The first had left him somewhere to direct his fear. This one removed even that.

His father was not moving away. He was not concealing himself. There was no immense, familiar presence waiting to make the loss an indignity it would correct.

Kaosu's mouth opened.

"Father?"

The word came out before any of the things he would have preferred to say.

He remembered making Karma laugh.

His arm had been broken. He had called his own arrogance genetic, and his father had laughed as though they were sharing something uncomplicated.

Kaosu hated that this was what he remembered now.

He wanted his anger back with someone alive at the other end of it.

Nothing answered.

Inside the domain, Eris lowered Karma's body.

Carefully, because dropping it would have cost her a movement she could no longer afford—not because she mistook what he had done for sacrifice on anyone else's behalf.

His remaining arm lay at its ruined angle. No flesh returned to the side Noctis had taken. His lips no longer held the smile that had accompanied the last words.

The dead man had not been pretending to lose.

He had lost.

He had chosen what losing would buy.

The private contest recognized one surviving belligerent.

Then the agreement disclosed its consideration.

The markings were not words. First Notation did not spell a request and send it somewhere to be interpreted. It arranged the conditions through which a particular return could occur.

Now that the price was paid, the identity being recalled became part of the agreement's meaning.

DISCORDIA.

Eris knew she was not looking at the name of a technique.

A person.

The revelation came with less information than she wanted and far more than she had expected.

The first energies had been people.

The First Instances.

They had not been built from concepts waiting patiently for bodies. Their existence had come first. The concepts had followed as reality tried to describe what those people were.

One designation surfaced in the ancient meaning.

The Mother.

Their creator.

There had been a rebellion against her. The notation did not give Eris its reasons. It did not tell her what Mother had done, what the first people had demanded, or what had followed their refusal.

It was not a history written for someone who wanted answers.

It was a way back for one of the people history had failed to keep present.

Chaos had not created Discordia.

Chaos was reality's attempt to describe Discordia.

The distinction ran through every scar in Bellum Ultimum.

Destroying a description did not, by itself, destroy the person it had been invented to describe.

Eris felt her familiar knowledge of Chaotic methods reach the edge of something much older than those methods.

Karma had carried Chaos into the domain as his own admitted power. The recall worked through that power now, using the relation between the energy and its first person.

There was no army trying to enter from outside.

The consequence of his completed agreement was taking form within.

Eris drove War against the arrangement.

The black plain bowed beneath the opposing forces. The white sky split along an absence that had been a missed shot through her head.

The domain tried to keep the completed duel closed around its sole surviving combatant.

Something else was becoming present inside it.

The pressure broke Bellum Ultimum apart.

Eris came through the opening with Karma's body beside her.

Her injured knee nearly gave way as the Theater received her weight. She caught herself without using the fractured arm.

Noctis saw the corpse first.

Then the marks unfolding behind it.

The meaning of the paid agreement reached the witnesses as the broken domain opened.

Noctis searched it for a condition under which the purchaser would be restored.

There was none.

The death was a payment, not a deposit.

Veydras looked at Karma's face. There was no living amusement left in it. No false body discarded by a god standing safely somewhere else.

Then he looked past him.

Red gathered in the opening.

The power arrived before the person was fully there to hold it.

A pressure spread across the Theater, and the Chaotic residue left by the entire battle changed its behavior. Currents that had obeyed Karma's selections loosened from those familiar arrangements. Incompatible states remained beside one another without the hurried correction that usually forced a result.

One of Noctis's golden calculations produced two different answers.

Both remained.

A woman took form beyond Karma's body.

Her hand appeared first against the red. The fingers moved, and for a moment she seemed to be examining the act of moving them.

Then her face became clear.

There was no triumphant recognition in it. No greeting for the man who had bought her return. Her gaze passed over the battlefield with the terrible absence of someone whose power had arrived before enough of her memory to understand what it was seeing.

"Discordia," Veydras said.

He knew the name.

The person looking through those eyes did not yet seem certain of it.

Eris could feel the difference between what stood before her and what had been paid to bring it there.

Karma was dead.

His final intention was not alive, either. It was an instruction preserved in the completed recall, a direction given to power before its returning owner had recovered enough of herself to choose another.

That direction turned toward Eris.

For an instant, Discordia hesitated.

Something moved behind her expression—a question without enough memory to give it words.

Then the hostility laid into the recall supplied an answer before she could make one of her own.

Eris stepped between the woman and the nearest wounded soldiers.

Her broken forearm remained braced against her armor. Her good hand rose. Neither the restoration nor the victory had given her back what the fight had taken.

She had defeated Karma.

She knew exactly how much it had cost.

Discordia looked at her.

Her power had returned.

Her name had returned.

Her choice had not.

And Karma's last instruction was waiting in the space where that choice should have been.
