Chapter — Seed of Strife
Karma stood with one arm.
The other remained where Noctis had cut it away.
The vertical wound through his body was still open, blood running freely from a severance powerful enough to continue through reality, the universe, and the multiverse behind him.
And Karma was getting bored.
Noctis noticed.
That frightened him more than the smile had.
"Higher ranks, pull back."
Ilyon looked at him. "We're retreating?"
"No."
Noctis watched Karma dismantle another divine construct with his remaining hand.
"We're stalling."
Ilyon glanced toward the army moving into formation.
"So we can escape?"
Noctis looked at him.
"No."
Ilyon waited.
Noctis's golden markings brightened.
"So we can win."
Ilyon stared at him for a moment.
Then smiled.
"That sounds considerably better."
Caelia grabbed his shoulder.
"Back."
"I was already going."
"You were smiling."
"I can retreat positively."
"Move."
The Shadow Syndicate advanced.
Not merely soldiers.
Things civilizations would have worshipped marched among those ranks.
Binary legions assembled weapons in motion. Temporal divisions staggered their existence across multiple intervals. Spatial battalions distributed themselves across distances that conventional armies couldn't have crossed in their civilizations' entire histories.
And between them walked gods.
Karma watched.
One arm.
Half his body cut open.
Still smiling.
"Come on, then."
They did.
The battlefield disappeared beneath light.
Karma disappeared with it.
A star collapsed around him.
A spatial compression folded the resulting explosion thousands of times.
Temporal weapons struck without traversing the interval between firing and impact.
Conceptual artillery followed.
Then the light split.
Karma walked out.
He grabbed a charging god by the face with his remaining hand and drove them through the battlefield.
Another attacked from behind.
Karma kicked backward.
The god vanished over the horizon.
Ilyon watched.
"Still think this is stalling?"
Noctis replied, "Very effectively."
"That wasn't reassuring."
"It wasn't intended to be."
Then Karma stopped.
He looked at the army.
And sighed.
"Enough."
Noctis's expression changed.
Karma reached inward.
Toward the Red Continuum.
Veydras immediately felt it.
"Noctis."
"I know."
Chaotic Energy poured into Karma's remaining arm.
Not the amount he had used against Sevrane.
Not the amount he had used against the gods.
More.
Far more.
Noctis's markings attempted to assign value to what he was seeing.
Numbers formed.
Changed.
Expanded.
Then vanished.
Ilyon looked at him.
"What?"
Noctis remained silent.
"Noctis."
"There isn't an exchange rate for that."
Ilyon stopped smiling.
The battlefield distorted around Karma's fist.
Space folded toward it.
Causality began contradicting itself.
Entire attack formations collapsed simply from existing too close to what Karma was preparing.
He wasn't trying to win an exchange anymore.
He had somewhere else to be.
So he was ending the battle.
Karma pulled his fist backward.
Every god present understood.
Every soldier understood.
Noctis understood.
They were dead.
Karma punched.
The fist traveled less than a meter.
Someone caught his wrist.
Nothing moved.
Not Karma.
Not the woman holding him.
Not the army behind her.
For one impossible moment, the battlefield seemed embarrassed by what had just occurred.
Karma slowly looked down.
Five fingers were locked around his wrist.
Then he looked at her.
Eris Mallicia.
God of War.
Her arm was trembling.
Violently.
Blood ran from beneath one fingernail.
Her boots had already begun moving backward.
One kilometer.
A million.
A galaxy.
The distance of a universe.
Still she held his wrist.
The infinite battlefield screamed beneath her feet as she continued sliding backward through distances that would have contained entire cosmologies elsewhere.
Then—
she stopped.
Karma's fist had not completed its swing.
Ilyon stared.
Then looked toward Caelia.
"You knew she was coming?"
Caelia exhaled.
"Eventually."
"That's not a useful arrival time."
From more than a universe away, Eris turned her head slightly.
"I can hear you."
Caelia immediately looked at her brother.
"Do not say that where she can hear you."
Ilyon whispered, "You told me after I said it."
"I was optimistic."
Karma looked at Eris.
"You're late."
Eris released his wrist.
"Archaverse."
Karma nodded.
"Fair."
Noctis almost objected to the absurd understatement.
He decided he had more pressing concerns.
Karma studied Eris.
"Appointment went through?"
"It did."
"When?"
"Eleven thousand years ago."
Karma actually looked surprised.
"That new for a god?"
Eris frowned.
"Are we fighting or discussing my employment history?"
Karma smiled.
"I like you already."
"I don't."
Karma attacked.
Eris moved first.
That was the strange part.
His shoulder hadn't turned.
His fist hadn't accelerated.
The attack had barely become intent.
Eris's head was already elsewhere.
Karma's knuckles missed her cheek.
Her elbow struck his ribs.
Karma rotated with it and kicked.
Eris ducked before his leg moved.
Another kick.
Already gone.
Punch.
Gone.
Knee.
Gone.
Karma stopped.
Eris stood several meters away.
"You know."
Eris raised her hands.
"Yes."
Karma smiled.
Then stopped deciding.
His body moved.
Pure reaction.
No committed sequence.
No finalized attack until the instant execution became necessary.
Eris's eyes widened.
Karma's fist hit her.
The battlefield ruptured.
Eris disappeared.
She crossed the distance of one universe.
Two.
Three.
More.
The shockwave followed behind her, shaking universes distributed throughout the infinite battlefield.
Karma lowered his fist.
The air around his knuckles hadn't finished settling.
Eris was back.
Her knee hit his jaw.
Karma's head snapped sideways.
For the first time, his smile disappeared.
Eris landed.
Blood ran from the corner of her mouth.
Something changed.
She had survived the attack.
War remembered it.
VETERAN PRINCIPLE
The same lesson would never be learned at the same price twice.
And something else began forming behind it.
Not resistance.
Doctrine.
A solution.
COUNTERDOCTRINE DEVELOPING
Karma saw it.
"Oh."
Eris attacked.
She was better than him.
Not stronger.
Not smarter.
Better at fighting.
There was a difference.
Karma understood combat with terrifying technical depth.
Eris had lived inside it.
She didn't block where the attack was.
She occupied the location from which the next exchange benefited her.
She didn't dodge attacks.
She used their misses.
Karma threw a jab with his only hand.
Eris slipped outside it.
She struck his ribs.
Karma kicked.
Eris redirected the knee, stepped through his balance and drove an elbow into his jaw.
He compensated instantly.
Eris had already expected the compensation.
Her heel struck his temple.
Karma slid backward.
He stopped.
Looked at her.
Then laughed.
"Again."
They collided.
The battlefield shook.
Karma struck.
Eris parried.
Eris struck.
Karma blocked.
She changed the attack halfway through.
He adapted.
She adapted to his adaptation.
Karma caught her wrist.
Eris used the grip to pull herself forward and headbutted him.
Blood burst from Karma's nose.
Karma headbutted her back.
Eris staggered.
Karma smiled.
Eris spat blood onto the ground.
Then smiled too.
The conflict deepened.
And War responded.
Noctis saw it first.
Eris was getting stronger.
Not because she had activated anything.
Not because someone was empowering her.
Because the encounter had become a contest.
The greater Karma's commitment became, the greater the disparity War permitted Eris to close.
Karma noticed moments later.
Their fists collided.
This time, Karma moved backward.
His eyes narrowed.
"You're getting stronger."
Eris replied, "You're making this more of a war."
Karma stared at her.
Then smiled.
"Then let's make it one."
Something shifted.
Everyone felt it.
Noctis looked around.
They had been so focused on Eris that none of them had noticed when the battlefield changed.
There was no boundary.
No wall.
No edge.
It occupied space through negative space—defined less by where it existed than by where ordinary space had been excluded.
It was anchored not merely to coordinates, but to a point in time and continuity.
Veydras destabilized the surrounding space.
Nothing opened outward.
A Spatial god attempted transit.
They emerged elsewhere inside the same battlefield.
Noctis understood.
They weren't trapped by distance.
They were trapped by unresolved conflict.
Eris's passive domain had already recognized the war.
And War required an ending.
Victory.
Defeat.
Surrender.
Or mutual agreement.
Until then, there was nowhere else to go.
Karma looked around.
"You've gotten better at that."
Eris replied, "I've had practice."
Then the armies moved.
Eris hadn't spoken.
She didn't need to.
Every hostile intention within the war existed inside her awareness.
Every troop.
Every weapon.
Every tactical position.
Every developing attack.
Every weakness.
Every next move.
Battle Omniscience.
She knew what the battlefield knew.
And the battlefield knew everything being done in the name of the war.
Eris raised two fingers.
Millions of soldiers reorganized.
Karma's eyes sharpened.
"That's useful."
"Very."
He attacked.
Eris dodged.
Karma changed his intention at the final instant.
She barely moved in time.
His knuckles tore across her cheek.
Eris answered with a hook.
Karma ducked.
Then her knee caught him instead.
He smiled.
She had already begun accounting for attacks without committed intent.
COUNTERDOCTRINE ESTABLISHED: UNCOMMITTED OFFENSE
Karma's smile disappeared.
Just briefly.
Eris saw it.
"So you do have that expression."
Karma punched her through another universe.
She returned before his fist had fully recoiled.
Her boot hit his chest.
Karma flew.
The gods watched in silence.
Then Ilyon whispered, "She's actually pushing him."
Caelia shook her head.
"No."
Ilyon looked at her.
Caelia watched Karma rise.
"He's still enjoying himself."
Eris heard her.
She knew Caelia was right.
Karma stood.
The battlefield was covered in his blood.
Half his body remained severed.
One arm remained gone.
For the first time in a very long while, he had encountered someone who could physically fight him, outmaneuver him, adapt to him and force him to participate in the exchange.
And yet—
he was still smiling.
Eris's expression became more serious.
Karma noticed.
"What?"
"You're holding something back."
Karma's smile widened.
"So are you."
"Not as much."
"I know."
Eris hit him again.
Karma slid backward across the Theater.
One universe.
Then another.
His remaining hand dragged through negative space, carving a line behind him as he slowed.
He stopped.
Still missing his right arm.
Still missing the severed half Noctis had taken from him.
Still bleeding.
The wound had not healed.
It could not heal cheaply.
Noctis had cut him conceptually.
Karma looked down at the missing side of his body.
Then back at Eris.
For the first time since she arrived, he wasn't smiling.
Eris noticed.
So did everyone else.
Karma reached inward.
Veydras went still.
"No."
Noctis turned sharply toward him. "What?"
Veydras didn't answer immediately.
He didn't need to.
Red light appeared inside the open wound in Karma's torso.
Not blood.
Not aura.
A horizon.
Something vast was opening behind his body.
The Red Continuum.
Ilyon's face changed.
Caelia whispered, "He's drawing from it."
Noctis stared.
The golden calculations across his arms ignited—
then failed.
One after another.
The Red Continuum widened.
Chaos spilled through.
Not the Chaos Karma naturally possessed.
Not the energy radiating from his divine body.
This was deeper.
Older.
Functionally without end.
Across the Theater, non-divine soldiers began collapsing.
One after another.
Thousands.
Millions.
They didn't die.
Their minds simply refused to remain conscious beneath the pressure.
Even the gods reacted.
Ilyon dropped to one knee and vomited.
Thessa's hands started shaking.
Caelia pressed one palm against the ground to steady herself.
Noctis's vision blurred.
Veydras remained standing, but the skin along his fingers destabilized from the density alone.
Eris did not move.
Her Battle Omniscience suddenly flooded with possibilities.
Thousands.
Millions.
Then contradictory possibilities.
Attacks that could happen.
Attacks that could not happen.
Attacks that had already happened depending on which causal line Chaos decided to acknowledge.
Her expression changed.
Karma was still standing there with one arm.
Still split by Noctis's conceptual severance.
But everything else about him had changed.
The red light around him compressed.
Not wildly.
Not explosively.
It settled.
The battlefield became quieter.
That was worse.
Noctis looked at him.
Then at the Red Continuum behind him.
He knew the designation.
Everyone important there did.
Noctis said it first.
"Seed of Strife."
Silence.
Ilyon stopped breathing for a second.
Caelia slowly looked toward Karma.
Thessa whispered, "He actually changed forms."
Eris's stance lowered.
Karma raised his one remaining hand.
Nothing about the missing arm returned.
Nothing about the severed side healed.
He simply stood there in the damage Noctis had dealt him—
and became more dangerous anyway.
The Theater shook.
Not from an attack.
From recognition.
Karma had stopped fighting in base.
Veydras stared.
Noctis's expression hardened.
Eris's Battle Omniscience continued screaming warnings she could no longer sort quickly enough.
Then Karma finally smiled again.
Smaller this time.
Colder.
"Now."
His remaining hand closed into a fist.
The Red Continuum poured through him.
"Let's see how good War really is."
Eris Mallicia raised her guard.
And for the first time since she arrived, she did not answer with a joke
