Chapter — Rec0mpense
Karma had not seen this many gods come to kill him in a very long time.
That made him happy.
Veydras emerged first.
Noctis followed.
Then came the others.
Ilyon Vareth, God of Misalignment.
His elder sister, Caelia Vareth, Goddess of Temporal Latency.
Sevrane, Goddess of Residual Motion.
Thessa, Goddess of Fracture Propagation.
Behind them came gods and entities drawn from disciplines that rarely shared battlefields willingly.
Temporal.
Binary.
Logical.
Spatial.
Causal.
Chaotic.
Conceptual.
And behind those gods came the Shadow Syndicate.
Karma slowly looked across them.
His smile widened.
"Gods."
Noctis watched him carefully.
Karma counted again.
"Actual gods."
Ilyon folded his arms. "Disappointed?"
Karma laughed.
"No. Quite the opposite."
He looked almost genuinely pleased.
"Do you understand how rare this is?"
Nobody answered.
Karma spread one hand toward the assembled Syndicate.
"Gods don't cooperate. Not for long. Too much jurisdiction, too much pride, too many people convinced their interpretation of existence deserves a larger chair."
Noctis replied calmly, "We had time."
Karma looked toward him.
"How much?"
"Quadrillions of years."
For the first time, Karma's smile paused.
Only briefly.
Then it returned.
"Quadrillions."
Veydras stared at him.
"We existed before you were appointed to Archaverse 27."
Karma's eyes moved toward him.
"Before me?"
"Long before."
Karma looked across the Syndicate again.
Not dismissively anymore.
He was studying them.
"You built all of this before I even governed here."
Noctis answered, "You weren't originally worth the trouble."
Karma threw his head back and laughed.
"Oh, I like you."
Noctis's golden markings shifted faintly across his arms.
"The feeling remains unpaid."
Karma smiled.
"Good."
Veydras raised two fingers.
"Begin."
Ilyon moved first.
He did not attack Karma.
He attacked where Karma was allowed to be.
Misalignment spread across the battlefield.
Karma's body remained exactly where everyone saw it.
His coordinates did not.
The discrepancy was microscopic.
Smaller than ordinary space should have cared about.
The Chaotic Escutcheon cared.
Reality corrected Karma's position.
Ilyon's eyes sharpened.
"Correction confirmed."
Caelia raised one hand.
"Latency applied."
The correction occurred.
History simply wasn't permitted to finish accepting it.
For a fraction of a second, Karma occupied the corrected location while the previous one had not entirely stopped being true.
Karma's eyebrows rose.
"Interesting."
Veydras shouted, "Now."
The Shadow Syndicate attacked.
The Escutcheon awakened.
Reality panicked.
A Binary spear bent away.
A Spatial attack unfolded in the wrong geometry.
A Temporal blade arrived before its wielder had committed to the swing.
A Causal strike reached its consequence and found the cause missing.
A Logical execution discovered an exception that had not existed a moment earlier.
Millions of corrections.
Exactly as planned.
Noctis said nothing.
Golden markings slowly accumulated across his arms.
Every correction cost something.
Every redirected consequence had value.
Every alteration reality made on Karma's behalf created a transaction.
Noctis recorded all of them.
Karma didn't notice.
Not yet.
Then Veydras entered the Escutcheon's range.
His fingers touched the red field.
Reality immediately tried to correct the contact.
Distance changed.
Probability shifted.
Causality attempted to revoke the reason his hand should have arrived.
Veydras destabilized all of it.
Reality corrected harder.
That cost more.
Noctis's markings brightened.
Veydras pushed again.
The Escutcheon destabilized.
Reality repaired it.
Another cost.
Noctis smiled faintly.
Thessa noticed.
So did Caelia.
The plan was feeding itself.
Sevrane attacked.
Her spear missed Karma by kilometers.
The Escutcheon had redirected it.
Sevrane closed her fist.
"Continue."
The spear stopped.
Its motion did not.
Momentum separated from the object that created it and continued toward Karma by itself.
The Escutcheon corrected.
Sevrane created another vector.
Then another.
Thousands.
Every failed movement was forced to keep existing.
Karma looked around at the invisible storm surrounding him.
"That's beautiful."
Sevrane grinned.
"Happy to help."
She released everything.
The residual motion converged.
Reality bent violently around Karma.
The Escutcheon held.
Barely.
His sleeve tore.
Karma looked down.
A thin line had appeared through the fabric.
Sevrane froze.
Karma touched it.
Then looked back at her.
"Very good."
Sevrane's smile weakened.
"Why did that sound threatening?"
Karma punched.
Sevrane immediately redirected her own remaining momentum.
She crossed the battlefield before the strike reached her.
Reality corrected the escape.
Ilyon misaligned the correction.
Caelia delayed its historical resolution.
For one extraordinary instant, three divine authorities fought reality itself over where Sevrane was allowed to be.
She escaped the direct hit.
The shockwave caught her.
Sevrane crossed the horizon.
Mountains disappeared beneath her trajectory.
She punched through a moon.
Then another.
She finally stopped inside the mantle of a distant planet.
Her body was ruined.
But alive.
Noctis's markings confirmed it.
SEVRANE — CRITICAL
ALIVE
Karma looked toward the reading.
"She survived."
Veydras replied, "You'll find that happens more often around us."
Karma smiled.
"I hope so."
Thessa moved next.
Veydras touched the Escutcheon again.
This time he didn't merely destabilize its surface.
He destabilized the relationship between defense and defended.
The Escutcheon reacted violently.
Reality poured correction after correction into preserving the link.
Noctis's markings spread higher across his body.
Thessa saw the first fracture.
"THERE!"
The Goddess of Fracture Propagation raised both hands.
She didn't create the crack.
She told it to continue.
The fracture spread through energy.
Then space.
Then the conceptual relationship binding the Escutcheon to Karma.
The red field split.
Veydras stepped through.
His fist hit Karma square in the chest.
Actually hit him.
Karma moved backward.
One step.
Then another.
Then another.
A destabilized handprint remained on his chest.
Karma looked down.
Then back at Veydras.
"You're dangerous."
Veydras answered simply.
"I know."
Karma smiled.
"Good."
Caelia entered next.
She targeted Karma's completed actions.
"Pending."
One step became historically unresolved.
Then another.
Karma's movements began stacking onto actions history had not yet finished accepting.
Ilyon attacked those discrepancies.
"Misalign."
Thessa propagated the resulting errors.
The Escutcheon corrected all three.
And every correction became more expensive because Veydras's destabilization kept forcing reality to rebuild what should have been stable.
Noctis recorded everything.
Quietly.
Patiently.
By then, the golden markings had reached his throat.
Karma was still looking at the others.
Still watching Veydras.
Still watching Ilyon.
Still watching Caelia.
Then Noctis finally stepped forward.
"Enough."
The Syndicate withdrew.
Karma looked around.
The attacks stopped.
He smiled.
"Finished?"
Noctis replied, "Almost."
Only then did Karma really look at him.
His expression changed.
Golden entries covered Noctis's skin.
Thousands.
Millions.
Not energy.
Accounting.
Karma's smile weakened slightly.
"What have you been doing?"
Noctis looked at the markings.
"Negotiating."
Karma's eyes narrowed.
Noctis raised one hand.
"Every time the Escutcheon corrected something, reality paid."
Golden values appeared around Karma.
One after another.
Then thousands.
"You redirected attacks."
Another value.
"You changed outcomes."
Another.
"You rewrote position."
Another.
"You altered probability."
Another.
"You repaired conceptual instability every time Veydras damaged the relationship between you and the Escutcheon."
More values appeared.
That was when Karma understood.
Not fully.
Just enough.
His eyes widened.
Noctis smiled.
"And I decided the exchange rate was unfair."
The values collapsed inward.
Karma moved.
Ilyon immediately raised one hand.
"Misalign."
Karma's escape shifted.
Caelia followed.
"Pending."
The completed movement failed to become historically final.
Thessa extended Veydras's remaining fracture through the defensive layer.
For the first time, Karma looked genuinely serious.
Noctis closed his fist.
"Recompense."
The battlefield went quiet.
The accumulated payments did not return as the attacks that had created them.
That would have been crude.
Noctis had spent quadrillions of years learning conversion.
A redirected sword did not need to return as a sword.
A corrected coordinate did not need to return as movement.
A deflected consequence did not need to return as its original consequence.
Noctis had renegotiated the value of all of them.
He had taken millions of small payments—
and converted them into one lethal currency.
Severance.
A single vertical golden line appeared above Karma.
It stretched upward.
Through the sky.
Through space.
Through something deeper than space.
Karma looked up.
For the first time in the battle, he did not smile.
Noctis whispered,
"Collection."
The line fell.
It cut reality first.
A white division opened from the top of the battlefield to the bottom.
Then it passed through Karma.
Then through the universe behind him.
Then farther.
The multiverse split along the same axis.
For one impossible instant, existence itself seemed to have been drawn into two separate pages.
Silence.
Karma remained standing.
Noctis stared.
So did everyone else.
Nothing seemed to have happened.
One second.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Six.
Seven.
Then blood exploded from Karma's body.
A violent crimson sheet burst from the vertical wound.
The right side of his torso separated.
His right arm dropped.
Part of his shoulder went with it.
The severed half struck the ground several meters away.
Blood sprayed across the battlefield.
Karma remained standing.
Half a body.
One arm.
Still upright.
Still looking at Noctis.
The Syndicate froze.
Ilyon's mouth opened.
Thessa stared.
Caelia's eyes widened.
Even Veydras stopped moving for a fraction of a second.
Noctis's breathing was heavy.
Blood ran from his nose.
Karma looked down at the missing half of himself.
Then at his arm lying on the ground.
Then—
he started laughing.
Quietly.
Almost disbelievingly.
Then louder.
Karma threw his head back.
Blood still poured from the wound.
He didn't care.
He laughed harder.
Not because the attack had failed.
It hadn't.
Not because he was mocking Noctis.
He wasn't.
He was delighted.
"Outstanding."
Noctis stared at him.
Karma's laughter continued.
"Do you have any idea..."
He stopped to breathe.
Then laughed again.
"...how long I've lived?"
Noctis said nothing.
Karma looked toward his missing arm.
"How many gods I've fought?"
His eyes returned to Noctis.
"How many divine attacks I've seen?"
Karma smiled wider.
"And in all of that time..."
He laughed again.
"...nobody has ever done anything quite like that."
Noctis wiped the blood from his nose.
"Then your previous opponents lacked imagination."
Karma laughed harder.
Finally, he looked at Noctis with something close to genuine respect.
"Lord of Recompense."
Noctis's expression sharpened.
Karma nodded once.
"You earned that title."
Noctis replied, "Then stay in two pieces and admire it."
Karma smiled.
"No."
But he did not restore his arm.
Not yet.
The severance had reached deeper than flesh.
Noctis hadn't merely cut matter.
He had converted the accumulated cost into a conceptual division.
The missing side of Karma's body remained severed because reality itself was still processing the price required to reconnect it.
Karma rolled his remaining shoulder.
One arm.
Half his torso.
Still smiling.
"Continue."
That was somehow worse.
Veydras moved.
He destabilized space beneath himself and appeared directly in front of Karma.
Karma turned with his remaining arm.
Ilyon misaligned the motion.
Caelia delayed its completion.
Veydras's hand entered Karma's chest without breaking skin.
He destabilized the boundary between interior and exterior.
Then searched.
Matter.
Energy.
Divine authority.
Chaos.
Deeper.
Something compressed beyond all of them.
Red.
Endless.
A realm hidden inside a man.
Veydras's eyes widened.
Karma noticed.
"What?"
Veydras reached deeper.
Red light leaked around his fingers.
Karma's expression changed.
Veydras smiled faintly.
"The Red Continuum."
Karma stopped.
Completely.
Not because he was restrained.
Because he was surprised.
Genuinely.
"You know what that is?"
Noctis answered from behind Veydras.
"We've had quadrillions of years."
Karma slowly looked from Veydras to Noctis.
Then to the gods supporting them.
Then back to the Red light leaking from his own chest.
He laughed softly.
"You actually did your homework."
Ilyon, bleeding from both eyes, replied, "Happy to help."
Karma looked toward him.
His smile changed.
"You're becoming irritating."
Ilyon's expression shifted.
For perhaps the first time in the battle, he realized Karma was speaking directly to him rather than generally enjoying himself.
Karma raised his remaining hand.
Ilyon froze.
Then Caelia stepped between them.
Temporal light unfolded around her.
"Try him."
Karma looked at her.
Then back at Ilyon.
Then smiled.
"Siblings."
Caelia's expression hardened.
Karma lowered his hand.
"For now."
Ilyon exhaled.
Caelia didn't look at him.
"I told you to stop talking."
Ilyon replied, "You say that constantly."
"Because you keep surviving long enough to ignore me."
That got the smallest smile out of him.
Then Veydras pulled.
The Red Continuum resisted.
Ilyon misaligned the correction.
Caelia delayed its completion.
Thessa propagated the conceptual fracture.
Noctis kept increasing the price of every repair reality attempted.
The remaining gods layered their disciplines around Veydras.
For several seconds, the Shadow Syndicate looked exactly like what it had spent quadrillions of years becoming.
Not individually stronger than Karma.
Collectively precise enough to make him work.
The Red Continuum shifted.
Barely.
But it shifted.
Karma looked down.
Then at Veydras.
The Chaotic Escutcheon strained around him.
Thessa shouted, "It's weakening!"
Ilyon pushed harder.
Caelia's hands shook.
Noctis's markings began spreading again.
Veydras pulled.
The Red Continuum moved farther.
Then Karma stopped resisting.
Completely.
Veydras noticed first.
His eyes narrowed.
"Noctis."
Noctis looked toward him.
The Escutcheon was no longer fighting.
Karma was simply watching them.
Then he smiled.
The Chaotic Escutcheon vanished.
Not shattered.
Not overloaded.
Not defeated.
Deactivated.
Thessa stumbled forward.
Ilyon's Misalignment suddenly found no defensive correction to interfere with.
Caelia's delayed corrections disappeared.
Veydras nearly tore the Red Continuum free from the sudden absence of resistance.
Noctis's face changed.
"Karma."
Karma rolled his remaining shoulder.
Still missing an arm.
Still cut nearly in half.
Still bleeding.
And somehow more dangerous than he had looked while whole.
He looked at the Shadow Syndicate.
At Noctis.
At Veydras.
At the gods who had damaged him.
There was genuine appreciation in his expression.
"You planned for when my shield worked."
Nobody answered.
Karma stepped forward.
"You planned for its corrections."
Another step.
"You planned for how reality displaced threats."
He looked toward Noctis.
"You planned for how to make those corrections expensive."
Noctis watched him carefully.
Karma looked toward Veydras's hand still gripping the connection to the Red Continuum.
"You even planned for the moment the Escutcheon began to fail."
Veydras's expression hardened.
Karma smiled.
"But you never planned for what happens..."
Chaos began leaking from Karma himself.
Not from the Red Continuum.
Not supplied.
Not borrowed.
His.
"...when I stop defending myself."
Ilyon took one step backward.
Caelia immediately shifted in front of him again.
Thessa went pale.
Noctis understood first.
The Escutcheon had not failed.
Karma had decided he no longer needed it.
Karma looked at Veydras.
Then at Noctis.
Then at the assembled gods.
One arm.
Half a torso.
Blood still running down his side.
He smiled.
"You spent quadrillions of years learning how to get through my defense."
His remaining fist closed.
"Now show me what you planned for the thing it was defending."
