Chapter — Casus Belli
Karma disappeared.
Eris's Battle Omniscience didn't see where he went.
That was the first problem.
The second was considerably worse.
It said he hadn't moved.
Eris turned.
Karma was already beside her.
His one remaining hand touched her shoulder.
No punch.
No windup.
Barely even pressure.
Karma smiled.
"Found you."
Eris's Battle Omniscience screamed.
She moved.
Too late.
Karma closed his fingers.
Chaos entered the concept of direction.
Up became toward Karma.
Down became toward Karma.
Away became toward Karma.
Every possible direction Eris could move was rewritten as an approach.
Eris launched herself backward.
She flew directly into his knee.
The impact folded her body.
Karma caught her by the throat before she could leave.
Then he threw her.
Eris crossed a universe.
Then another.
Then—
she was coming back.
Not voluntarily.
Karma had changed what distance meant between them.
Every unit of separation now counted negatively.
The farther Eris traveled from Karma, the closer she became.
She crossed another universe.
And appeared directly in front of him.
Karma punched.
Eris blocked.
Her forearm shattered.
The Theater split beneath them.
Eris disappeared through distances large enough to contain universes between individual fragments of debris.
Karma looked behind himself.
Eris was already there.
Her broken arm had not healed.
But she had survived.
VETERAN PRINCIPLE
RECORDED OFFENSE: DIRECTIONAL SUBVERSION
COUNTERDOCTRINE ESTABLISHED
Karma tried it again.
Every direction became toward him.
Eris stepped left.
She went left.
Karma's eyes sharpened.
Eris kicked him in the ribs.
"That worked once."
Karma caught her ankle.
"That's annoying."
He threw her downward.
Eris hit the Theater hard enough to create an absence where the impact occurred.
Not a crater.
A section of battlefield simply ceased possessing the privilege of being there.
She rolled aside.
Karma's foot came down.
Missed.
And struck the concept of sequence.
Eris heard the impact.
Then Karma raised his foot.
Then she saw him attack.
Her eyes widened.
Effect.
Cause.
Intent.
Karma had scrambled their order.
Her Battle Omniscience showed the next attack.
It had already hit her.
Blood exploded from Eris's chest.
Only afterward did Karma punch.
She flew.
Another wound opened.
Karma hadn't attacked yet.
Then he kicked.
Another.
Not yet.
Elbow.
Eris couldn't predict attacks whose consequences arrived before the decisions that produced them.
Karma walked after her.
One arm.
Half a torso.
Completely relaxed.
Eris coughed blood.
Karma tilted his head.
"Battle Omniscience."
Eris steadied herself.
"What about it?"
"You know my next move."
Karma smiled.
"So I stopped having next moves."
He vanished.
Eris's head snapped backward.
The strike that caused it happened two seconds later.
Noctis couldn't follow them anymore.
He could follow the accounting.
Barely.
Every exchange produced values around Eris.
Damage.
Risk.
Aggression.
Escalation.
Violation.
Noctis's eyes narrowed.
That last one was increasing.
Veydras noticed his expression.
"What?"
Noctis pointed.
"She's keeping track."
"Of what?"
Noctis watched Karma strike Eris with an attack whose origin didn't exist until after its destination.
"Everything."
Karma opened his palm.
Chaos compressed.
A tiny red sphere appeared above it.
Eris stopped.
Her Battle Omniscience produced no tactical recommendation.
The sphere contained mutually incompatible states.
Explosion.
Implosion.
Erasure.
Creation.
Expansion.
Collapse.
All true.
Karma flicked it.
The sphere missed Eris.
It continued past her.
Eris turned.
"Why did you—"
Karma snapped his fingers.
The miss became the condition for impact.
The sphere detonated everywhere it had failed to hit.
The Theater turned red.
Universes shook.
Eris disappeared inside it.
Ilyon hit the ground.
Caelia covered him.
Even the gods were thrown backward.
Then the explosion began collapsing.
Something walked through it.
Eris.
Her armor was almost gone.
One eye had swollen shut.
Blood ran down both arms.
But she was walking.
Karma stared.
Eris wiped her mouth.
"Finished?"
"No."
Karma flicked another.
Eris raised one hand.
"Then neither am I."
Something answered.
Not energy.
Not the Theater itself.
War.
Words appeared across the negative space.
CASUS BELLI
Karma stopped smiling.
Noctis understood immediately.
Every attack Karma had performed had constituted an escalation.
Every conceptual violation.
Every attempt to circumvent contest.
Every increase in force.
War had been recording them as precedent.
And precedent authorized response.
Eris closed her fist.
OFFENSE: DIRECTIONAL SUBVERSION
RESPONSE AUTHORIZED
Direction returned.
Not merely around Eris.
Everywhere within the conflict.
Karma attempted to bend it again.
War refused.
Not permanently.
Not universally.
But within this particular conflict, he had already demonstrated the weapon.
Eris had survived it.
War had learned it.
And now she possessed grounds to answer it.
Karma's eyes narrowed.
"Oh, that's clever."
Eris smiled through the blood.
"You've been very generous."
Karma attacked sequence.
OFFENSE RECORDED.
Cause moved behind effect.
Eris took the hit.
Her ribs broke.
She remained standing.
VETERAN PRINCIPLE.
The second strike arrived.
Less damage.
The third—
less.
The fourth—
Eris caught it.
Karma's eyebrows rose.
COUNTERDOCTRINE ESTABLISHED: ACAUSAL OFFENSE
Cause and effect snapped back into combat order around her.
Karma's fist was suddenly in Eris's hand.
She twisted.
Karma rotated with it.
Eris drove her knee into his elbow.
The joint broke.
Karma looked at it.
Eris punched him.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The third strike launched him backward.
Karma corrected reality.
Reality moved to catch him.
Eris's eyes changed.
CONTEST.
The Theater reacted.
Karma stopped in midair.
Then dropped.
Reality had not caught him.
He landed on his feet.
Slowly.
Karma looked around.
He tried again.
Reality moved.
The Theater intervened.
EXTERNAL PARTICIPANT DETECTED
REALITY
BELLIGERENT STATUS: NONE
INTERVENTION REJECTED
Silence.
Karma looked genuinely offended.
"Reality isn't an external participant."
Eris wiped blood from her chin.
"It isn't fighting me."
"It helps me."
"That's precisely the problem."
Noctis almost smiled.
For the first time, Karma's Escutcheon had encountered something that didn't need to overpower reality.
War had simply informed reality that it wasn't on the roster.
Karma activated the Chaotic Escutcheon anyway.
The crimson shell formed.
Reality panicked around him, desperately searching for ways to prevent Eris's next attack from reaching its target.
Eris stepped forward.
The shell distorted her path.
She stepped again.
Distance expanded.
Again.
Probability collapsed.
Again.
Causality constructed a reason she couldn't arrive.
Eris stopped.
Karma smiled.
Then the Theater spoke.
CONTEST REVIEW
DEFENSIVE PARTY: KARMA
DEFENSE PROVIDED BY: EXTERNAL STRUCTURAL AUTHORITY
CLASSIFICATION: INTERFERENCE
Eris looked at him.
"Disallowed."
The Escutcheon vanished.
Karma's smile disappeared.
Eris punched him directly in the face.
The impact broke white cracks through the negative space.
Karma flew.
Eris followed.
Before he landed—
elbow.
Before he recovered—
knee.
Before his feet touched—
hook.
Karma crossed three universes.
Eris was waiting in the fourth.
Her fist struck his stomach.
He folded.
Eris grabbed his hair and threw him downward.
Karma hit the Theater.
For several seconds, nobody said anything.
Ilyon finally looked at Noctis.
"She's winning."
Noctis didn't look away from Karma.
"No."
Ilyon frowned.
"He's on the ground."
"Yes."
"She's standing."
"Also yes."
"That's generally how winning works."
Noctis's expression remained grim.
"He's learning."
Karma stood.
His broken elbow hung incorrectly.
He looked at it.
Then at Eris.
The joint reorganized itself into something that had never been an elbow.
Eris's Battle Omniscience stalled.
Karma moved.
The limb bent through an anatomically meaningless angle.
Eris dodged the expected strike.
The arm changed what counted as its front.
It hit her anyway.
Eris flew.
Karma appeared above her.
He had stopped using recognizable martial structure.
His leg divided conceptually into multiple possible trajectories.
All of them kicked.
Eris blocked three.
Four struck.
Her body slammed through negative space.
Karma followed.
Eris's Battle Omniscience adapted.
Karma changed again.
No style.
No repeated geometry.
No stable anatomy.
No consistent causality.
Chaos was no longer trying to beat War at fighting.
It was making fighting impossible to define.
Eris hit the ground.
Karma landed nearby.
"Your abilities need a war."
Eris slowly stood.
Karma raised his remaining hand.
"So what happens if nothing I'm doing qualifies as combat?"
Eris froze.
The Theater flickered.
Noctis whispered, "Oh, that's bad."
Karma smiled.
Then Eris laughed.
Karma's expression changed.
She straightened.
"You're trying to defeat me."
The Theater stabilized instantly.
Karma said nothing.
"Call it whatever you want."
Eris raised her fists.
"That's war enough."
Karma laughed.
"Fair."
Then he did something worse.
Karma reached into the Red Continuum.
He pulled out a possibility.
Not an object.
A possible history.
One in which the Shadow Syndicate had never assembled.
No Veydras.
No Noctis.
No army.
No reason for Eris to be here.
Karma closed his fist around it.
The Theater began disappearing.
Ilyon became translucent.
Caelia looked at her own hand.
"What is happening?"
Noctis understood.
"He's attacking the war."
Veydras's eyes widened.
Karma wasn't killing Eris.
He was removing the historical conditions necessary for the conflict to exist.
Eris turned toward her army.
For the first time—
she looked afraid.
Karma smiled.
"Can't be God of a war that never happened."
Then Eris's domain answered.
CASUS BELLI
The words were enormous.
They stretched across continuity.
ATTEMPTED RETROACTIVE ANNULMENT OF ACTIVE CONFLICT
A second line appeared.
ACTION ITSELF CONSTITUTES HOSTILITY
Eris stared at it.
Then slowly looked at Karma.
Karma stared back.
The Theater restored itself.
Ilyon became solid again.
Caelia inhaled sharply.
Noctis actually laughed once.
Karma looked upward.
The domain's ruling remained.
His attempt to erase the war—
was itself an act of war.
Karma started laughing.
Genuinely.
He threw his head back.
"That's ridiculous."
Eris smiled.
"Thank you."
"That wasn't praise."
"I accepted it anyway."
Then Karma stopped laughing.
Seed of Strife deepened.
The Red Continuum expanded behind him.
And Eris's smile vanished.
Karma had tested direction.
Sequence.
Causality.
History.
Reality.
The definition of conflict itself.
Now he stopped testing.
He raised his remaining hand.
Every god in the Theater felt sick.
Noctis saw the attack forming and immediately shouted:
"ERIS!"
She already knew.
Battle Omniscience had shown it to her.
That was why she looked horrified.
Karma wasn't targeting Eris.
He wasn't targeting the army.
He wasn't targeting the Theater.
He was targeting difference.
Friend and enemy.
Attack and defense.
Victory and defeat.
Alive and dead.
If the attack resolved, the distinctions War required to function would collapse into the same state.
There could be no contest if both sides were conceptually indistinguishable.
Karma compressed the attack into his one remaining fist.
Eris's abilities started firing simultaneously.
VETERAN PRINCIPLE: NO PRECEDENT
COUNTERDOCTRINE: INSUFFICIENT DATA
CASUS BELLI: MAXIMUM AUTHORIZATION
BATTLE OMNISCIENCE: NO VIABLE RESPONSE
CONTEST: FAILURE IMMINENT
Eris stared at the warnings.
Then dismissed them.
Noctis shouted, "What are you doing?!"
Eris raises her hands
"Advanced Technique."
The Theater stopped.
Every army disappeared.
Noctis felt the ground leave him.
Veydras reached for Eris—
and found nothing.
Eris finished.
"Private Domain: Bellum Ultimum — The Last War."
