"You wish to explore the origins of Firebending?"
After hearing Kahn's purpose, the Sun Warrior leader nodded slightly.
"If that is the case, then you must seek guidance from the two Firebending Masters—Ran and Shao."
"Ran and Shao?"
The unusual names made Kahn raise an eyebrow.
Before he could say anything, Ty Lee suddenly interrupted.
"Wait!"
Both Kahn and the leader turned to look at her. Ty Lee puffed her cheeks, glaring at the leader.
"You still haven't explained why that guy attacked us the moment he saw us!"
The leader paused, then replied calmly.
"That is a rule of our tribe. Although outsiders believe the Sun Warriors are extinct, we have actually lived in seclusion here for generations. We do not wish to interact with the outside world.
"However, occasionally travelers like you pass through. We usually hide ourselves to avoid contact, but we must also prevent bad people from destroying the temple."
He continued, "If someone accidentally discovers us, we subdue them first and then deliver them to the two Masters—Ran and Shao—for judgment."
"It's them again?" Ty Lee muttered.
At the mention of the two, the leader's eyes filled with reverence.
"Those two are not only Firebending Masters—they can see a person's heart and soul, even their past and present lives."
He let his words hang before continuing:
"Those who are captured must accept the judgment of the Masters. Those who pass will make a secret pact with us and be released. Those who fail…"
He stared directly at Ty Lee, making her shrink back.
"…will be burned to ashes by their flames."
Then he turned to Kahn.
"And to receive teachings from the two Masters, you too must undergo an examination."
The implication was obvious, but Kahn simply smiled.
"Of course. No problem."
"Kahn…" Ty Lee murmured nervously.
From the way the leader described Ran and Shao, they sounded extremely powerful. If Kahn failed the judgment… what then?
She would rather escape with him than face two unknown terrifying beings.
"Don't worry. It'll be fine."
Kahn reassured her with a calm smile, gently patting her head.
He already had a good idea who the so-called Masters truly were.
And he trusted his strength. Even if he couldn't defeat them, escaping with Ty Lee was always an option.
Ty Lee's cheeks reddened slightly when he ruffled her hair, but she nodded. If Kahn said it would be fine, then it would be fine.
The Sun Warriors led them toward a high platform where a massive brazier burned with a steady flame.
"This is the original flame of the world," the leader explained. "Passed from dragons to humans. Our tribe has worshipped it for generations."
Kahn's eyes gleamed with interest.
"To seek guidance from the Masters, you must carry a portion of the Eternal Flame—proof of your devotion to Firebending."
Since Ty Lee was not a Firebender, only Kahn received a flame.
"This ritual symbolizes your acceptance of the Sun Warriors' worldview. You must maintain the flame's temperature."
But Kahn was already examining the fire eagerly. A flame passed down by dragons—could it be true Dragon Flame?
"…Are you listening?"
"Huh? Ah, yes, yes, I'm listening."
Kahn forced an awkward smile. The leader pretended not to notice and continued explaining the steps of the ritual.
Then the Sun Warriors directed them toward their destination: the Twin Divine Mountains.
Between the two steep peaks lay a long, narrow valley—split as if cleaved by a sword. Their altar awaited at the valley floor.
Nike dispersed back into four small creatures, following behind as Kahn and Ty Lee departed.
Seeing the divine being vanish, the Sun Warriors all quietly exhaled in relief.
As they walked, Kahn studied the Eternal Flame in one hand while conjuring a normal fireball in the other, comparing the two.
"Is there any difference?" Ty Lee asked, curious.
"Emmmmmm…"
Kahn narrowed his eyes, trying to feel out the flames. But he couldn't sense anything meaningful yet.
"Still unclear."
He shook his head. It was too soon to draw conclusions.
Their pace did not slow at all. The mountain path was rugged, but trivial for their skills. And the Eternal Flame remained steady—beating like a strong, living heart.
The "altar" was a circular stone platform.
A towering cloud ladder rose from it, stretching up the mountainside to a higher platform suspended between the two peaks.
Many Sun Warriors had arrived earlier. They stood around the circular platform performing preparations for the ritual.
"The true judgment begins now," the leader declared. "Offer the Eternal Flame to the two Masters."
"Understood."
He took a small wisp of the Eternal Flame from Kahn's hand, then gestured for Kahn to climb the stairs.
Ty Lee followed, nervous but determined. As an outsider, she too would be judged.
But she clung to Kahn's reassurance.
If Kahn said it would be fine, then it would be fine.
Down below, the Sun Warriors formed a massive ritual circle. The Eternal Flame passed between them, forming rings of light.
Drums thundered—deep, rapid, rousing, like a fiery war song.
The leader bellowed, "O seeker of the Masters! Present the flame in your hand!"
Kahn lifted the Eternal Flame respectfully.
At the same time, the corners of his lips curled.
Because he had already seen the true identities of the two Masters.
The next moment—
Two long, slender shadows shot out from the two caves on either side of the mountains. They swooped past the platform, circling the sky above the altar.
Deer antlers, camel head, rabbit eyes, ox ears, snake neck, fish scales, eagle claws…
There was no doubt.
These were the legendary beings who once taught humans Firebending—creatures believed extinct.
"Dragons?!" Ty Lee gasped.
Kahn's eyes gleamed with excitement as he stared at the magnificent forms weaving through the sky.
A slow smile spread across his face.
Finally… I've seen them.
