After listening to Aang, Kahn paused for a moment—and finally understood the real issue.
He sighed and asked, slightly exasperated:
"Why do you think you need to give up someone you love just to master the Avatar State? Do you think all your past lives were single?"
"This…"
Aang froze.
From what little he knew, it definitely wasn't true. In fact, single Avatars were the minority. Avatar Roku, for example, had married and raised a family.
So he immediately began doubting himself.
"Wait… so I misunderstood? The guru wasn't telling me to give up the person I love?"
"Then what did he mean?"
Kahn continued, "The last chakra—the Thought Chakra, the Meditation Chakra—is at the crown of the head. It's connected to pure cosmic energy, and it gets blocked by attachment to worldly things."
"The guru must have told you that, right?"
Aang nodded.
Kahn added, "In my opinion, this 'attachment to worldly things' can be interpreted another way—obsession."
Attachment was vague. Obsession was not.
Obsession is the unshakeable fixation that forms when someone clings too tightly to something—an extreme longing or desire that twists into fixation.
Where Kahn came from in his previous life, countless ghost stories described spirits lingering due to unresolved obsessions.
Some souls refused to reincarnate because of powerful attachments—and became wandering ghosts instead.
That was similar to the idea of the Meditation Chakra being blocked by worldly obsession.
"So," Kahn continued, "the guru was telling you to let go of your obsession."
He gave Aang a classic example.
"For instance—say you like Katara, but she falls in love with someone else, and they're genuinely happy. What do you choose?"
"Would you destroy their relationship and chase her anyway?
Would you bury your feelings, stay by her side, and wait until their relationship breaks someday?
Or would you bless their happiness and move forward with your own life?"
"I…"
Aang clenched his hands and couldn't answer. Kahn let him think.
After a long, long silence, Aang finally whispered with a heavy expression:
"…I want to pick the second one. But… I would bless her."
"Congratulations," Kahn said with a smile. "You've learned how to let go."
The three choices represented levels of obsession:
The first — extreme obsession, selfish and toxic, bordering on mental instability.
The second — normal human obsession, neither good nor bad; just common.
The third — letting go, painful but liberating.
It was a crude classification, but enough to illustrate the point.
After congratulating him, Kahn asked:
"Why didn't you choose the second one?"
Aang replied honestly, "Because… even if Katara didn't like me back, she'd still be my friend. And thinking about her like that while staying close to her… feels wrong."
Kahn looked away. Twelve years old—and Aang already had a better moral compass than many adults.
Aang, still distressed, suddenly froze.
"Wait—if I've already let go, why isn't my last chakra unlocked yet?"
"It's not that easy," Kahn chuckled.
"You barely let go just now. I could see how reluctant you were. To unblock a chakra, you have to reach a point where you can face the issue without any emotional turbulence."
"The method is simple—keep facing the problem, keep making the choice, until you truly don't care anymore."
It sounded simple. In reality, it was torture. And Aang had no desire to revisit the painful scenes he had just imagined.
"But… that's not how it was when I trained with the guru," Aang muttered. "He just guided me through it. It wasn't this hard."
"I know what you mean," Kahn said.
"But the guru must've told you that his method was just a shortcut, right?"
Aang blinked—and remembered. The guru had warned him.
People who heard about Aang's training might think it sounded easy. But the shortcut was actually difficult and dangerous.
Real inner cultivation was supposed to be personal. You search inward, confront your fears, your flaws, your trauma, and reconcile with your true self.
It hurts—because the human heart is messy, confusing, and sometimes self-destructive.
For example, Kahn himself knew three of his chakras were blocked… but didn't know why. He had to find that answer alone.
But Aang's shortcut involved borrowing the guru's spiritual power—allowing someone else to enter his mind, guide his emotions, and even forcibly break energy blockages.
Clever—but extremely risky.
Letting someone else directly manipulate your inner self was terrifying.
One wrong touch, even accidental, could harm the mind or twist the personality. Far more dangerous than physical injury.
And to safely do that kind of spiritual guidance, the helper needed extremely high-level Spiritbending. Kahn couldn't do that yet.
"So your options are simple—either do the hard work yourself, or go back, apologize to the guru, and finish your training."
Kahn shrugged. He couldn't help with this one.
Aang's face twisted in misery.
"T-then… I'll go back to the guru…"
He clearly hated the idea of facing emotional torture again—but he had no choice.
At least his problem finally had a path forward. Aang thanked Kahn, then suddenly asked with curiosity:
"Kahn, what about your chakras? They're all unblocked, right?"
Kahn gave a dry laugh.
"Not even close."
