After a long time apart, everyone gathered to share their experiences.
Kahn and Toph were the first to recount everything that had happened in Ba Sing Se during their absence—and every single detail made the group react with louder and louder shock.
"Azula infiltrated the palace?!"
"The Dai Li rebelled again?!"
"You actually caught Azula?!"
"And the other two girls joined our side?!"
"Zuko even started a relationship with Mai?!"
With each twist in Kahn's story, the reactions piled up. No one had expected so many intense and dangerous events to take place so quickly.
"Luckily you stopped their plan," Katara said, exhaling in relief. "If Azula had kept hiding in the palace… I don't even want to imagine it."
"They disguised themselves as Kyoshi Warriors and infiltrated the palace?!" Sokka shouted. "Then—where are the real Kyoshi Warriors?!"
He leaned forward urgently.
"What about Suki?! Where did they take her?!"
The Kyoshi Warriors were Avatar Kyoshi's elite force—everyone knew how skilled they were.
When Team Avatar had traveled to Kyoshi Island, Sokka had formed a special relationship with Suki, the current leader.
Mai answered quietly:
"I'm very sorry. I'm afraid they've already been transported to a prison in the Fire Nation."
"No!"
Sokka slammed his fist on the table, rage instantly taking over.
"Of course you should be sorry! You're sitting here—as the enemy—while Suki's locked in a Fire Nation prison because of you!"
He turned and stormed out.
His anger crushed the atmosphere instantly. Even Zuko had no words—because Sokka wasn't wrong.
"Mai, you…" Zuko began.
"It's fine."
Mai took Zuko's hand, still calm.
"Maybe what we did seems unforgivable to you. But I don't think I did anything wrong. Back then, we were your enemies. That's all."
"Mai…" Zuko murmured.
Ty Lee anxiously looked between the two sides, worried Mai's bluntness would spark another argument.
But what Mai said wasn't wrong—and Katara and the others weren't unreasonable. Still, her cold attitude created an awkward silence.
Kahn stepped in, breaking the tension, "Talking about this now won't fix anything. It'll just ruin the mood. Let's shift topics."
He turned to Aang. "Why did you come back so quickly? How's your Avatar State training going?"
"Uh—I—it's going pretty well… I guess. Y-yeah. Good."
Aang's evasiveness was painfully obvious.
Katara and Sokka also shared their recent experiences. Their father, Hakoda, was commanding troops at Chameleon Bay, and the two had joined him soon after arriving.
They proved how much they'd grown—Sokka with his strategies, Katara with her Waterbending—earning admiration from their entire tribe.
Katara retold the experience with joy, proud not only of seeing their father but of finally proving that she and Sokka were no longer children who needed to be protected.
After chatting for a while longer, Zuko, Iroh, and Mai excused themselves.
That was when Aang quietly tugged at Kahn's sleeve.
"Kahn… can we talk?"
"What's wrong?"
Kahn followed him into the courtyard. After confirming they were alone, Aang finally confessed his problem.
He hadn't mastered the Avatar State.
He had actually slipped away in the middle of training—again—and didn't dare reveal the truth because he was afraid of disappointing everyone.
Since Kahn had trained with Guru Pathik before and even mastered Spiritbending, Aang hoped Kahn might be able to give him guidance.
"You slipped away again?" Kahn said, speechless.
Aang had run away a hundred years ago. And now he'd run away again. Did this boy not fear the universe messing with him twice?
Aang pouted, "Because I really couldn't do it!"
He hesitated for a moment, then whispered:
"I want to tell you a secret. Please don't tell anyone else. Actually… I like Katara!"
"…And then?" Kahn said flatly.
He had read enough history about the Air Nomads to know they weren't actual celibate monks.
They married. They had families. So he wasn't even slightly shocked.
Aang stared at him in disbelief.
"What do you mean 'and then'?! Dude, aren't you surprised?!"
"What's there to be surprised about?" Kahn sighed. "A man liking a woman—totally normal. And Katara is a great girl. You've got good taste. I wish you luck."
"Th-thanks…" Aang muttered, flushing.
Kahn smirked, "If you told me the person you liked was Sokka, then I'd be shocked."
"Ewwww—no!"
Aang immediately shivered at the mental image.
"I mean—I like Sokka, but not like that."
They returned to the topic.
Guru Pathik had told him that to fully master the Avatar State, he had to open all seven chakras.
With the guru's help, he opened the first six quickly.
But the last chakra… he couldn't open it. Or rather, he didn't want to.
"Guru Pathik said I have to give up my feelings for Katara to open the final chakra. But how am I supposed to do that?!"
Aang pouted miserably.
"My feelings were perfectly fine before the third chakra. But now I'm told to let go of her? How does that make any sense?!"
This was the heart of his conflict. As the Avatar, he had to master the Avatar State—but he didn't want to abandon his feelings. And so he ran.
After hearing everything, Kahn asked:
"Let me ask you something. Did Guru Pathik say you need to 'give up' your feelings… or 'let go' of them?"
"Huh?"
Aang blinked.
"There's a difference?"
"Of course there is."
