Chapter 31 - The Fortress Nurse‎

[Xefer's POV]

‎

‎The inn was quiet, the lamps casting a soft glow across the wooden walls. Xefer sat at the table, the Fortress Fortress Fruit resting before him. Its surface was marked with swirls, its aura faint but undeniable.

‎

‎Kiruko entered with the girls, her new clothes fitting her well, her satchel at her side, her book tucked safely within. She looked at Xefer, her eyes uncertain but steady.

‎

‎Xefer's tone was calm, gentle. "Kiruko. There's something I need to tell you."

‎

‎She blinked, clutching her satchel. "What is it?"

‎

‎He gestured to the fruit. "This is the Fortress Fortress Fruit. A devil fruit. If you eat it, you'll gain the power to create and control fortresses — walls, defenses, protection. It will amplify your resolve to heal and protect."

‎

‎Kiruko's lips parted, her breath catching. "A… devil fruit?"

‎

‎Xefer leaned forward. "Yes. But it's not my choice. It's yours. Do you want it?"

‎

‎---

‎

‎[Kiruko's POV]

‎

‎Silence lingered.

‎

‎Kiruko stared at the fruit, her heart pounding. She had spent her whole life weak, helpless, at the mercy of others. But this — this was a chance to change everything.

‎

‎The girls stepped closer, their voices soft but encouraging.

‎

‎Keala smiled, her flames flickering faintly. "With this, you'll be able to shield us while you heal."

‎

‎Keeva grinned, her eyes sparkling. "You'll be unstoppable. Our fortress."

‎

‎Kunai's crimson eyes glowed faintly, her aura shimmering. "It suits you. You're strong enough to carry it."

‎

‎Kiruko's hands trembled around her satchel. She looked at the fruit, then at Xefer, then at the girls. Her heart raced, her resolve burning.

‎

‎"I… I'll take it," she whispered. "I'll use it to protect you. To heal you. To prove myself."

‎

‎Xefer nodded. "Good. Then lead us. Find a place worthy of your first step."

‎

‎

‎[Kiruko's POV — The Forest]

‎

‎Kiruko turned, leading them through the town. The streets were quiet, lanterns glowing faintly. She walked with purpose, her steps steady, until they reached the forest at the edge of town.

‎

‎The trees loomed tall, the air thick with silence. Kiruko stopped, turning to Xefer. "Here. This is where I'll take it."

‎

‎Xefer held out the fruit. "Then eat."

‎

‎Kiruko took it, her hands trembling. She raised it to her lips, biting into the strange flesh. Her face twisted instantly, disgust flooding her senses.

‎

‎"It's… horrible," she gasped, forcing herself to swallow. She took another bite, gagging, but continued until the fruit was gone.

‎

‎The girls laughed softly, their voices warm.

‎

‎"That's the taste of power," Keala teased.

‎Keeva smirked. "You'll get used to it."

‎Kunai's aura shimmered faintly. "Endure it. That's what makes you strong."

‎

‎Kiruko staggered, her body trembling. Then, suddenly, she felt it — a surge of energy, a pulse of power. Her eyes widened, her breath catching. She raised her hands, and faint walls of energy shimmered around her, forming briefly before fading.

‎

‎"I… I can feel it," she whispered. "The power. The strength. The fortress."

‎

‎She turned to Xefer, her eyes shining with gratitude. "Thank you. For trusting me. For giving me this gift."

‎

‎Xefer's expression softened. "Use it well. Protect them. Protect yourself. That's all I ask."

‎

‎The girls surrounded her, their laughter echoing through the forest. They hugged her, teased her, celebrated her. Kiruko's heart swelled, her resolve burning brighter than ever.

‎

‎

‎[Xefer's POV]

‎

‎Together, they walked back through the town, their spirits high.

‎

‎As they neared the inn, the system's voice echoed in Xefer's mind:

‎

‎[Luck Reward complete. Mystic Ship obtained. Self-controlled vessel with advanced facilities and AI-like defense system.]

‎

‎Xefer's lips curved into a quiet smile. He did not speak, but inside, joy filled him. A ship worthy of their journey awaited.

‎

‎Keela noticed his expression. "What is it?"

‎

‎Xefer's smile widened. "We have a ship. A real ship. One that will carry us anywhere we need to go."

‎

‎Keeva's eyes sparkled. "A ship? Where?"

‎

‎Xefer chuckled. "You'll see tomorrow. For now, rest. We have a long journey ahead."

‎

‎He walked into the inn with calm steps, his heart light, his mind satisfied. The night was peaceful, and for the first time in days, everything felt aligned.

‎

‎Keela followed him inside, her hand finding his. "You really do know how to surprise us."

‎

‎Xefer squeezed her hand. "I aim to please."

‎

‎Keela laughed softly. "You're impossible."

‎

‎"Yet you love me."

‎

‎Keela smiled. "That I do."
