In the living room, Dafa propped my leg up on a stack of cushions. The small house felt warm and safe. Because here, surrounded by the familiar comforts of home.
"I need to get back to work soon," I said, my voice low, as Dafa settled beside me on the sofa. "The hospital is already short-staffed, and I've been gone for days. I can't leave them in the lurch any longer."
Dafa frowned. "Your health comes first, Alayna. The hospital will manage."
"I know," I said, "but there are patients who need me. And I can't afford to be seen as unreliable, especially not with everything else going on." The thought of neglecting my duties, of letting down my colleagues and patients, weighed heavily on me.
"What kind of shifts are you scheduled for?" Dafa asked, his brow furrowed. "Can you request lighter duties, at least for a few days?"
