"Can we change departments?" Thomas asked.
Trevor's eyes widened, a flicker of panic crossing his face. "Sure, provided the head of the new department agrees to take you. Don't tell me you're looking for an exit already?"
"No, not at all," Thomas shook his head firmly. He liked the quiet. He liked the files. And most importantly, he liked being in a place where he could hide his tree and his secrets in plain sight. "I was just curious. Anyway... where is everyone?"
Even with a staff of seven, the department felt haunted. The silence in the room was heavy, broken only by the distant hum of the city outside.
"We just got hit with something massive a few days ago," Trevor explained, his gaze drifting toward the wall maps. "A transport train was intercepted and attacked by a coordinated group of villains. The rest of the team is currently at the site trying to gather intelligence."
