Anna looked into Charles's resolute eyes for a few seconds and let out a faint sigh. "Yes, your memory was modified, but I don't know what happened before either."
Charles's pupils contracted slightly. "You didn't modify my memory? How could you not know? Could something else have modified it?"
"Yes, it's true I modified them. But I also deleted my own memories—erased them so cleanly that not a single trace was left."
Anna's soft fingers came up to her lips, stopping Charles from asking any more questions. "Our past selves left an explanation to prevent us from investigating. You'll understand after you see it."
A seam split open along her pale neck, and Charles's familiar smartphone extended from within.
With fingers painted in red nail polish, Anna quickly tapped the screen a few times, playing a video for Charles.
The video showed Charles and Anna, both looking extremely haggard. Their expressions were grim and unsightly.
