"There were some big-headed black monsters, twice a person's height, floating out of the cave."
The word "indigenous" immediately flashed through his mind. He hadn't expected to find underground caverns on this island, let alone indigenous inhabitants.
After listening to the mice squeak a few times, Lily turned around and continued to translate, "Those pirates threw a great deal of fish into the cave, and then those floating black monsters drove this thing out."
With that, Lily pointed to the soft, black sphere in Charles's hand.
"There were massive piles of them inside, enough to fill several ships. Then, some people in ragged clothes loaded them onto iron carts to be transported out. Those people must be slaves."
Charles stared, puzzled, at the black-and-blue living creature in his hand. Could this be the fuel the pirates traded with the indigenous people for?
