Chapter 33 - Chapter 33: Lessons in Survival.

The days that followed blurred together in a haze of pain, exertion, and the constant threat of death. True to his word, Ashido began Grayson's training as soon as his wounds had sufficiently healed. The cave that had once felt like a sanctuary quickly became a crucible, pushing Grayson to his limits and beyond.

"Again!" Ashido's voice echoed off the stone walls, firm and unyielding.

Grayson gritted his teeth, sweat pouring down his face as he raised his Zanpakutō once more. His arms trembled with exhaustion, but he forced them steady, focusing on the weight of the blade, the feel of the hilt in his hands. Across from him, Ashido stood relaxed yet alert, his own weapon held in a deceptively casual grip.

With a cry, Grayson lunged forward, his blade singing through the air. Ashido moved like smoke, effortlessly dodging the strike and countering with a swift blow that sent Grayson stumbling back.

"Your form is improving," Ashido commented, his tone neutral. "But you're still telegraphing your moves. In the Forest of Menos, hesitation means death."

Grayson nodded, catching his breath. He knew Ashido was right. The older Soul Reaper's fighting style was unlike anything he had seen before – a seamless blend of traditional Zanjutsu techniques and unorthodox moves born from centuries of survival in Hueco Mundo. It was beautiful and terrifying to behold, and Grayson found himself in awe of Ashido's skill.

As they sparred, Grayson couldn't help but use his system to gauge Ashido's strength. The familiar status window appeared in his mind's eye, confirming what he already suspected - Ashido's power easily surpassed that of a vice-captain, possibly rivalling some captains. The years of constant battle in Hueco Mundo had honed him into a formidable warrior.

"Your spiritual pressure is impressive," Grayson ventured, hoping to gain some insight without revealing his ability. "How did you manage to grow so strong in this place?"

Ashido paused, considering the question. "Necessity," he finally replied. "When every day is a battle for survival, you either grow stronger or you perish. This world... it changes you, shapes you."

The training continued, relentless and unforgiving. Ashido pushed Grayson to his limits in every aspect - swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat, Kidō, and even reiatsu control. With each passing day, Grayson could feel himself growing stronger, his reflexes sharpening, his spiritual energy becoming more refined.

But it wasn't just the training that forged Grayson's newfound strength. The constant battles against Hollows played a crucial role in his development. Every day, without fail, they ventured out into the Forest of Menos to thin out the Hollow population.

Their first excursion had been a shock to Grayson's system. The oppressive atmosphere of the forest, the eerie cries of Hollows echoing in the distance, and the constant, gnawing feeling of being watched had nearly overwhelmed him. But Ashido's steady presence had anchored him, giving him the courage to face the nightmarish landscape.

"Stay alert," Ashido had warned as they moved silently through the towering quartz trees. "Hollows can appear at any moment. Trust your instincts."

As if summoned by Ashido's words, a group of Hollows burst from the shadows. Their masks gleamed in the dim light, hungry eyes fixed on the two Soul Reapers. Grayson's heart raced, but he forced himself to remain calm, falling into the stance Ashido had drilled into him.

The first Hollow lunged at Grayson, claws extended. Time seemed to slow as Grayson's training kicked in. He sidestepped the attack, his Zanpakutō flashing out in a precise arc. The Hollow's mask split with a satisfying crack, and the creature dissolved into spirit particles.

His system's voice pinged in his mind, rewarding him with EXP every time he defeated a Hollow. The familiar notification flashed in Grayson's mind, but he had no time to dwell on it. More Hollows were coming, drawn by the commotion. Beside him, Ashido moved with lethal grace, cutting down Hollows with economical, powerful strikes.

Grayson lost himself in the rhythm of battle, his blade singing as it cleaved through Hollow after Hollow. He wove Kidō into his attacks, just as Ashido had taught him, using Bakudō to immobilize his enemies before finishing them with his sword.

"Bakudō number 1, Sai!" Grayson yelled, tapping a group of Hollows before he cut them down with ease.

As the last Hollow fell, Grayson stood, covered in sweat and the rapidly dissipating remains of their foes. He felt exhausted but also exhilarated. The rush of battle, the thrill of victory, and the tangible sense of his own growth filled him with fierce joy.

Ashido nodded approvingly. "Well done. You're learning to read the flow of battle. But don't let it go to your head. There's always a stronger enemy waiting."

Grayson could also see that the levels of the Hollows here in the forest were much higher than normal Hollows, being level 15 and over with some hitting up to level 25, giving him some great EXP.

*Quest complete, kill over 100 Hollows in the forest.* The system said, awarding him with more EXP.

Soon days turned into weeks, and these battles became a part of Grayson's daily routine. Each encounter was a lesson, each victory a step towards mastery. Grayson's level continued to rise, and with it, his confidence and skill.

One day, as they were returning from a particularly gruelling expedition, Grayson couldn't help but ask, "Ashido-san, why are you doing this? Why help me?"

Ashido was silent for a long moment, his gaze distant. When he spoke, his voice was soft, tinged with an old sorrow. "Because I see in you the same fire that burned in my comrades. The same determination to survive, to protect. And perhaps... perhaps in helping you find your way home, I can honour their memory."

Grayson felt a lump form in his throat, moved by the raw emotion in Ashido's words. "I won't let you down," he vowed.

Ashido's eyes refocused, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. "See that you don't. Now, let's work on your Kidō. It needs improvement if you're going to survive out there."

As they resumed training, Grayson checked over his stats quickly, still not being able to help but wonder about the mysterious "Bonus" in his own status window. What hidden potential lay dormant within him? And would it be enough to face the challenges that lay ahead in the depths of Hueco Mundo?

Speaking of laying dormant, Grayson had also not heard from his Zanpakuto since his defeat, not even having released his Zanpakuto to its Shikai form since that day.

However, pushing the thought to the back of his mind, Grayson gained renewed determination, Grayson raised his hands, spiritual energy crackling at his fingertips. Whatever trials awaited him, he would face them head-on. For his friends back in Soul Society, for Ashido, and for himself.

The cave echoed with the sound of clashing swords and incantations, a symphony of growth and perseverance in the heart of a hostile world. And through it all, Grayson kept his system a secret, relying on it quietly to gauge his own progress and to better understand the enigmatic mentor who was reshaping him into a warrior capable of surviving Hueco Mundo's dangers.

As weeks passed, Grayson began to notice subtle changes in his status window. His base stats were slowly increasing, but more intriguingly, new skills were appearing - techniques born from Ashido's unorthodox training methods and the crucible of daily battles. He was becoming something more than just a Soul Reaper, adapting to this harsh world just as Ashido had.

The constant fights against Hollows were taking their toll, but they were also transforming Grayson in ways he had never imagined. His reflexes became lightning-fast, his spiritual pressure more refined and controlled. He learned to sense the approach of Hollows before they appeared, to read the ebb and flow of battle with an almost preternatural awareness.

One particularly harrowing encounter stood out in Grayson's mind. They had been ambushed by a group of powerful Hollows and some Menos, led by a towering beast with a bull-like mask and wickedly curved horns. The battle had pushed Grayson to his absolute limits, forcing him to dig deep into reserves of strength he didn't know he possessed.

In the heat of combat, something had clicked. Grayson's Zanpakutō had sung in his hands, moving almost of its own accord. His Kidō had flowed seamlessly, weaving complex spells without conscious thought. For a brief, transcendent moment, Grayson had touched something greater than himself, a wellspring of power that left him both exhilarated and humbled, as if he had tapped into a greater power within himself.

When the dust settled, and the last Hollows fell, Grayson stood amidst the dissipating spirit particles, panting heavily but filled with a sense of accomplishment. Ashido had given him a long, considering look before nodding in approval.

"You're beginning to understand," Ashido had said cryptically. "The true nature of power, of what it means to be a Soul Reaper in this world."

That evening, as they sat by the dim light of a Kidō flame, Ashido fixed Grayson with a penetrating gaze. "You've grown stronger," he observed. "But the real test lies beyond these cave walls. Tomorrow, we venture deeper into the Forest of Menos. It's time you faced the true nature of this world."

Grayson nodded, a mix of anticipation and anxiety churning in his gut. As he settled down to rest, his mind raced with thoughts of what awaited him in the shadows of Hueco Mundo. Little did he know, the challenges ahead would push him to the very limits of his newfound strength and beyond.

In the quiet of the cave, Grayson checked his status one last time before sleep took him:

Grayson couldn't believe the numbers he was seeing. During his time here so far he had levelled up at an extremely impressive rate, looking at the numbers over and over again.

"Amazing... I wonder how long it would have taken me to grow this strong back in the soul society?" Grayson pondered to himself as he lay there, wondering what he would spend the skill points he had accumulated on.

Once again. the mysterious "Bonus" still eluded him, but Grayson could feel it, a dormant potential waiting to be awakened. As he drifted off to sleep, he wondered what secrets the depths of Hueco Mundo would reveal, and how they would shape his journey back to the soul society, knowing that he still had to face one final challenge before he left.

"I'm coming for you Hollow, and this time I won't lose."
