Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Fated Rematch!

The air in the Menos Forest grew heavy, charged with an electric tension as Grayson and the newly arrived Hollow faced each other. The remnants of the defeated Adjuchas dissolved into spirit particles around them, a grim reminder of the battle that had just concluded.

Grayson's hand tightened around the hilt of Jūryoku no Megami, his newly awakened powers thrumming through his veins. The familiar weight of his Zanpakutō felt different now, more alive, more in sync with his own spirit. He could feel his spirit's presence, her whispers of encouragement at the edge of his consciousness.

Across from him, the Hollow's demonic mask seemed to grin wider, its spiritual pressure pulsing with newfound strength after consuming its comrade. The blades on its arms glinted in the dim light of the forest, still dripping with the essence of its recent meal, while the scar along its chest reminded Grayson of their previous encounters.

"I've finally found you... Little Soul Reaper!" the Hollow's voice boomed, a mixture of anticipation and malice. "Did you think you could hide from me forever?"

Grayson stood his ground, his own spiritual pressure rising to meet the challenge. "I wasn't hiding," he said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through him. "I was preparing."

The Hollow's laughter echoed through the forest, a chilling sound that sent nearby lesser Hollows scurrying for cover. "Preparing? And what good will that do you? I've grown stronger too, little one. The countless souls I've devoured have made me more powerful than you can imagine!"

Ashido took a step forward, his hand on his own Zanpakutō, but Grayson held out a hand to stop him. "No, Ashido-san. This is my fight."

Ashido's eyes narrowed, assessing the situation. After a moment, he nodded, understanding the determination in Grayson's eyes. "Very well. But be cautious. This Hollow is not to be underestimated. Its strong."

Grayson nodded, grateful for his mentor's trust. He turned his full attention back to the Hollow, feeling Jūryoku no Megami's power coursing through him.

"Last time, I underestimated you," Grayson admitted, his stance shifting into a battle-ready position. "I won't make that mistake again."

The Hollow's spiritual pressure flared, its excitement palpable. "Big words from such a small Soul Reaper. Let's see if you can back them up!"

With a roar that shook the very trees around them, the Hollow charged, its bladed arms raised for a devastating attack. Grayson stood his ground, Jūryoku no Megami held before him, ready to unleash the true power of gravity.

*A new quest has been initiated: Defeat your nemesis,* the system chimed in Grayson's mind, adding an extra layer of determination to his resolve.

"Why am I not surprised Grayson said to himself, getting ready as the Hollow was about to charge.

The Hollow's charge was swift and merciless, its bladed arms whistling through the air as they aimed for Grayson's head. With a thought, Grayson activated his Jūryoku Sutairu, lightening his body. He dodged with incredible speed, the Hollow's blades missing him by a hair's breadth.

"Hadō #4: Byakurai!" Grayson shouted, pointing his finger at the Hollow. A bolt of white lightning shot forth, striking the Hollow's shoulder. It roared in pain but didn't slow down.

The Hollow spun, its tail whipping toward Grayson. "Bakudō #39: Enkōsen!" A circular shield of condensed reiatsu materialized, deflecting the attack. The force of the impact sent Grayson sliding backward, his feet digging furrows in the forest floor.

"Is that all you've got, little Soul Reaper?" the Hollow taunted, its wounds already beginning to heal.

Grayson gritted his teeth. "I'm just getting started!" He swept his Zanpakutō in an arc, creating invisible walls of gravity around the Hollow. The air seemed to distort as the barriers took shape.

The Hollow charged again, only to slam into one of the invisible walls. It snarled in frustration, its claws scrabbling against the barrier. "Clever trick, but it won't save you!"

With a burst of spiritual pressure, the Hollow shattered the gravity walls. Grayson's eyes widened in surprise. This Hollow was indeed stronger than before.

Grayson swung Jūryoku no Megami, releasing a barrage of energy blasts. The projectiles curved and twisted in impossible arcs, homing in on the Hollow from all directions, a new technique he had been granted by Jūryoku no Megami, having seen it added to his skill list.

The Hollow dodged and weaved, its movements unnaturally fluid. But the erratic paths of Grayson's attack were too unpredictable. Several blasts struck home, eliciting howls of pain and rage.

Seizing the moment, Grayson flash-stepped closer. "Hadō #31: Shakkahō!" A ball of red energy erupted from his palm, exploding against the Hollow's chest.

As the smoke cleared, the Hollow emerged, wounded but far from defeated. Its spiritual pressure spiked, dark energy coalescing around its blades. "Enough games!" it roared, unleashing a devastating flurry of strikes.

Grayson parried frantically, Jūryoku no Megami singing as it met the Hollow's blades. Each impact sent shockwaves through the forest, uprooting trees and scattering lesser Hollows.

"Kujiku! (Crush)" Grayson yelled, focusing his power. The gravity around the Hollow intensified exponentially. The ground beneath its feet cracked and cratered as the immense pressure bore down.

For a moment, it seemed the Hollow would be crushed. But with a primal scream, it pushed back against the gravitational force. "Nice try, boy. But I've devoured too many souls to fall to such a trick!"

The Hollow burst free of the gravity well, launching itself at Grayson with terrifying speed. Its blade caught Grayson's arm, drawing blood. Grayson stumbled back, pain lancing through him.

"Bakudō #4: Hainawa!" A crackling rope of energy shot from Grayson's hand, wrapping around the Hollow's arm. But the Hollow's strength was too great. It yanked on the energy rope, pulling Grayson off balance.

As Grayson stumbled forward, the Hollow's other blade came sweeping toward his neck. At the last second, Grayson used Jūryoku Sutairu to increase his weight, anchoring himself to the ground. The blade whistled over his head, missing by inches.

Grayson swung his blade quickly, letting a powerful gravitational field erupt around him, pulling the Hollow in. The creature struggled against the force, its claws leaving deep gouges in the earth as it was dragged closer.

As the Hollow entered striking distance, Grayson channelled his remaining energy into Jūryoku no Megami. The blade glowed with power as he swung it in a deadly arc, enhanced by the crushing gravity.

The Hollow, despite the intense gravitational field, managed to twist its body at the last second. Jūryoku no Megami sliced through its side, drawing a howl of pain, but failed to deliver a decisive blow. The Hollow countered immediately, its remaining blade slashing across Grayson's chest.

Grayson stumbled back, gasping in pain. The two opponents faced each other, both breathing heavily, their bodies marked with wounds.

"I underestimated you, Soul Reaper," the Hollow growled, its voice a mix of pain and grudging respect. "But this ends now!"

With a roar, the Hollow charged again, its spiritual pressure spiking to new heights. Grayson raised Jūryoku no Megami, preparing for the onslaught.

What followed was a blur of strikes, parries, and desperate dodges. Grayson cycled through his techniques rapidly, each one barely keeping him alive against the Hollow's relentless assault, something he would not have been able to do before his training here with Ashido.

"Hadō #11: Tsuzuri Raiden!" Electricity coursed along Jūryoku no Megami, shocking the Hollow as their blades met, giving Grayson a moment to take advantage.

"Bakudō #1: Sai!" The binding spell momentarily locked the Hollow's arms, giving Grayson a split second to catch his breath, not sure if such a low level Bakudō would have worked.

Grayson qucikly lightened his body to dodge a devastating blow, then immediately increased his weight to deliver a crushing counter-attack.

The forest around them was decimated, trees uprooted and the ground scarred by their battle. Neither combatant seemed able to gain a decisive advantage.

As the fight reached its peak, both Grayson and the Hollow realized it would come down to a final exchange. They charged at each other, pouring every ounce of their remaining strength into one last attack.

Grayson, swinging Jūryoku no Megami with all his might let loose the space-bending energy blast curved around the Hollow's guard. Simultaneously, the Hollow lunged forward, its massive jaws opening wide, aiming for Grayson's shoulder and chest.

Time seemed to slow. Grayson's attack struck true, cutting deep into the Hollow's body. But the Hollow's momentum carried it forward, its teeth sinking into Grayson's flesh.

For a heartbeat, they stood locked together, Grayson's blade buried in the Hollow's core, the Hollow's jaws clamped on Grayson's shoulder and chest.

Then, the Hollow began to laugh, a chilling sound that reverberated through its body and into Grayson's wounds. "This... isn't... the end... Soul Reaper," it gasped between laughs.

As the words left its mouth, the Hollow's body began to disintegrate, bursting into a cloud of spirit particles. But instead of dispersing, the dust seemed to swirl and coalesce, drawn inexorably towards Grayson.

Grayson's eyes widened in shock and confusion as he felt the particles being absorbed into his body through his wounds. A strange sensation coursed through him, neither pain nor pleasure, but something alien and unsettling.

As the last of the Hollow's essence disappeared into him, Grayson staggered, his mind reeling from what had just occurred. Before he could process what had happened, a familiar chime sounded in his mind:

*Warning: Foreign substance detected. Unknown spiritual matter has entered the host body. Effects unknown. Further analysis is required.*

Grayson looked down at his wounds, then at the space where the Hollow had been, his mind racing with questions. What had just happened? What did it mean? And most importantly, what would it do to him?

With these unsettling thoughts swirling in his mind, Grayson turned to face Ashido, seeing a mix of pride, concern, and now, alarm in his mentor's eyes. The battle was won, but at what cost? In the depths of the Menos Forest, Grayson realized that his journey had just taken an unexpected and potentially dangerous turn.
