Chapter 7 - Balance

Ryan and Emily continue to walk to her class.

"So you're doing karate now, huh?" Emily says, smiling.

"Yeah, I just wanted to learn how to defend myself from the, boys in yellow."

"I understand that. Bout time someone stood up to those guys."

"And I'm just happy to be the one to do it."

The two smile at each other as they stand by the classroom door.

"Well, this is my stop." Emily says.

"Alright, I'll see you around."

As Emily is about to head into the classroom, Ryan stops her.

"Hey uh, would you, maybe want to do something, tonight?"

Emily smiles when she hears this.

"Yeah, I'd like that."

"Great, it's a date."

"Awesome. Just swing by my place around nine."

"Alright."

Emily then gets confused when she sees Ryan going down stairs.

"Wait, I thought your class was around here."

"No, I said I was heading this way. My class is back down stairs."

Emily laughs and heads into class and Ryan walks down stairs.

Meanwhile, Derek is talking to Ethan about what happened earlier.

"Looks like the new kid started learning karate." Derek says.

"And? We're Cobra Kai, the baddest dojo in the valley." Ethan replies.

"True, True."

"Whoever's teaching that loser, can't compare to us. And we'll prove that when we destroy him."

Elsewhere, Bill is mopping the floor and gets stopped by nurse Mai.

"I saw the new kid, Ryan this morning. Now why do I get the feeling that you have something to with that?"

"Don't make it a big deal. I'm just teaching the kid how to defend himself, that's all."

"I'm just glad you're doing karate again. You were amazing back in highschool."

The two smile at each other but Bill quickly snaps out of it.

"Well, I better keep mopping."

When school let's out, Ryan meets Bill by his truck in the parking lot.

"Hey sensei. You ready for training today?"

Bill smirks at the young man.

"Oh yeah. I think it's time for the tree."

Ryan looks confused for a moment.

"Uh tree, sensei?"

Bill just smiles and pats him on the shoulder. The two drive to the woods and walk to Bills special spot.

"You hear that? Close your eyes and just listen." Bill asks.

Ryan closes his eyes and listens closely.

"What do you hear?"

"Nothing."

"Exactly. No phone calls, no internet, no distractions. Just you and mother nature. That's why we're here. This is what Wolf Fang Karate is all about."

As the two grin, they start to train. The two go over few strikes and basic movements for a minute, with Ryan keeping up step for step. The two of them walk through the woods again.

"I kinda feel like Bruce Lee right now." Ryan says.

"I'm not gonna lie, you are more of a natural than I was when I started training."

"Was that a compliment, sensei?"

"Easy wise guy, don't get too cocky. There's always a lesson that's waiting to knock you on your ass."

"So, we heading back?"

"No, not yet, training isn't over. You might know the moves, but none of that matters if you don't have balance. And I don't mean balancing your body. I mean balancing your life."

Ryan's smile fades.

"I can tell that you're carrying more on your shoulders than just this stuff with Cobra Kai. So when those bad feelings all weigh you down, you gotta...search inside for the good stuff, because then you can find some balance in your life. It's not easy but, you'll do it. You understand?"

"Yes, sensei. Thank you, sensei."

"Don't thank me just yet."

Bill moves out of the way and reveals a tree laying across above the ground.

"Go ahead and get up on this tree right here."

Ryan drops his bag and hops on the tree.

"Find your balance. Alright kid, show me what we learned today, show me a front kick."

Ryan finds his footing on the tree, then throws a front kick easily.

"Not bad. Now let's try a round kick."

Ryan finds his footing again and throws a round kick with ease.

"Is this supposed to be hard, sensei?"

"Ok big man. Show me a hook kick."

Ryan nods and repositions his feet. He goes for the hook kick, but falls hard to the ground.

"Ah, something definitely broke there." Ryan says in pain.

"Alright, get back up and try again. Let me know when you can do all of the kicks without falling."

Bill grabs his phone and starts walking off.

"Wait, where are you going?"

"The Cowboys are playing the Vikings, I'm gonna move to a spot with better service."

"What happened to no distractions?"

"Football doesn't count."

Ryan laughs and jumps back on the tree. He tries to do the kicks over and over again, but still ends up falling. After falling for the tenth time, he takes a few deep breaths. Ryan then slowly gets back on, still taking slow and steady breaths. He does a front kick with ease. He then throws a round kick, still keeping his balance. As he approach the last kick, he closes his eyes and listens to the silence. Ryan then throws a hook kick, keeping his balance.

He is so happy, that he has a small celebration but falls off the tree after he is done.
