I was sitting at the small wooden desk right near the main entrance hall, sorting through my handwritten notes on the Aldenmere files and lining up the smooth stones Rowe had given me.
That is exactly what I was doing when the heavy front door clicked open.
One of our young maids pulled the door back, and Nadine Voss stepped straight into the entrance hall, closely followed by Isolde Maddox.
They didn't wait to be invited. They walked in casually, like the house belonged to both of them. Nadine was carrying a massive bundle of fresh yellow flowers and an expensive designer tote bag. Beside her, sixty-one-year-old Isolde stood perfectly straight in a tailored dark suit, holding herself like an absolute monarch.
"Put these in the kitchen, please," Nadine told the maid immediately, thrusting the heavy bundle of flowers into the girl's arms. "And tell Mrs. Albright I brought back the silver tea set Isolde borrowed last week."
