I slowly rose from the chair, my feet carrying me away from the desk like I rejected the meaning of what I was hearing. It couldn't be. I must've been hearing things.

"They… they took her?" My voice came out lower than I intended, almost as if I was scared to hear it spoken out loud. I pressed my hand to my face, wondering if I had been tossed into some horrible nightmare.
